yeah im glad i didnt wire it yet...i went and got that plug...i have like 3 that are 9 volt but my fans are 12 volt..kinda a bummer but its all good now...

i just need to know about the lights...the ext. cord isnt colored on the wire and am curious if i hook it up backwards if it will mess it up or just not do anything....im just wiring the one fixture to one cord cuz the fans are all 12v so it shouldnt be too hard...thnaks in advance

Hey Darren - That Colby adapter will work fine. You definately need a DC adapter with your DC fan otherwise you'll blow it up like ABlueDuck did. That really sucks.

Here's a DC fan and an adapter that I scrounged from an old answering machine. I have a box of these things kicking around from old junk. I bet that adapter was at least $20 at radio shak.




Check out the sticker on the fan. It says DC 12V and 0.12A. This fan will use 12V * 0.12 A = 1.44 watts.

The sticker on the adapter reads
Input 120V ~ 60Hz 5W
Output 12V = 100 mA

This means the adapter will convert 120V AC to 12V DC and supply 100 mA or 0.1 A.

To hookup, just connect the two wires together. The direction of the fan can be changed by swapping wires.



Here's a pic of the AC fan that I have installed in the light section of the growbox.

See it's rating is 120V ~ 60Hz 12W. This is an AC fan because of the symbol ~ and the frequency in Hz.

This fan is wired to an extension cord to be plugged into a wall outlet. The motor always rotates in the direction marked on the fan.

red....if i wire the lights to the "wrong" set of wires on the end of the ext. cord will it just not turn on? or will it like blow up in my face....i know which wires go where on the LIGHT just not which wires go where for the ext cord...or does it matter

If your in the US and are using the two prong socket you have two ends one is 'fatter' than the other. The fat on is white (neutral) the skinny one is black, or at least thats how I wired mine up yesterday and it turns on and no smoke for fire happens.

Yep. black to black and white to white.. dont' cross colors or bad things will happen .
When I get home I'll see if I can post a picture of my wiring.

hey red i know it's been said many times but i had to say thanks to you for your inovations here and the great knowledge you are willing to share with us. i am cali med patient 215420 and hope to follow your fine example. it's exactly what i was lookin for. i did stumble upon a couple sterelite 35 gal. tubs for free. i was hopeing i could follow your example with these. if you please sir will i need to add more lights or make scrubber bigger? i want to follow your example but they were free! retired and cruiseing on small pension.

Hi Darren, as long as you wire all the whites together and all the blacks together it will work fine. It doesn't matter what prong on the extension cord the white or blacks get wired to. The big thing is to make a safe connection that won't pull apart. I like to use wire nuts and then tape it securely with electrical tape.




Hey Sickboy, welcome to the Lodge. I'm sure happy to help out a med user. I use the herb for migraine and asthma relief and a bit recreationally too, ok a lot recreationally. LOL

Those 35gal tubs are quite a bit bigger than my 18 gal tubs so you will have to add a few more lights to the tubs. I'd install lights to get between 75 and 100 w/sqft if possible. I don't think you'd have to make the scrubber much bigger. It works really well.

Well, I am on week 5 and no preflowers. As you can see from the pics I am beginning to have an over grow situation in the tub with 4 plants. (Not that I am complaining or anything)

Red and Crew, what has been your experience from seed? The whole reason I started with 4 plants was to try and definately get atleast 2 females. I feel like with the four in there right now they are competing for light and the bottom sections of the plants are not getting enough light.

I have also been reading The Cannabis Grow Bible by Greg Greene (I highly recommend this book to any new growers) and in the section on Scrog it says that it is best to start a scrog grow from clones.

Do you do any Scrogging when starting from seed? When I see which plants are female can I then scrog those? What if I end up with 4 females (please Jah) Do I have to clip 2 of them or should I set them aside for later use? Also, should I take clones now or reveg my best and take clones of that plant

Tonighht I am full of questions and a bit of mexican weed as well!!

Darren, I know that wiring shit can be a pain, but it pays to ask the questions you are asking. I remember when i wired up my R2 unit I was meticulous. I wrapped everthing I could double with the electrical tape. I also uses a plastic cover over all my 12 volt wired plugs. I used 12 volt converters I found at work from old electrical equiptment. I also remember being super paranoid the first couple of days that the whole thing would just melt down from the heat but i am happy to report trouble free operation using my tub for a 24/7 veg for almost five weeks now. (knock on wood) I had a little heat problem or I was just being paranoid, but Red Reminded me to cut the light intake bigger and now my temps are in the high 70's or low 80's. Here are some pics of my R2 Unit.....

Hey brother, nice crowd of plants you got going on.

I have a few different strains going on. The one that is flowering is from a mega-mix
pack I got from Capt.Crip. I also have 2 white widow, and a white widow crossed with a different plant from the mega mix.

Nice wiring! I keep my splices small by wrapping a tight couple of twists with electrical tape and then cinching it down with a twist tie. twist tie it, and you can sleep at night knowing you won't burn the house down.

I'm looking at setting something like this up and I had a few questions.

I was looking at the TrueAir filter and my local walmart doesn't have them so I went to the next best thing, amazon. They list two. and I'm not sure which your using.

My seeds came today, wow-QUICK! Gypsy Nirvana really pulled-thru; they also sent me a dozen Skunk #1 seeds as a freebie - Kewell!!!

OK - I've already got them folded snugly in the damp paper towels... and they're sitting in a nice, warm spot, here's my question: How damp does the Peat/Vermiculite/Perlite "Basic soil mix" want to be, once they're ready for the beercups?
