Imagine this for a second and tell me if this sounds okay, or how to improve.

3/8" hose from collection chamber
Hose then is connected to 1/4" adapter to connect to dryer filter
Dryer filter connects to Appion

Correct!

Can I use the can tap with a 4 foot 1/4" hose or should I grab a 1' hose?

Can tap goes in to the liquid or vapor port?

A 4' hose will work.

I disconnect the hose from the vacuum pump and attach that to the can tapper. I use the vacuum pump ball valve to isolate the hose when changing cans, and I run the recovery pump while injecting into the lower pot through the vacuum pump hose.

When the pressure gauge on the Terpenator reads zero, you can valve off the line and change cans.

Be sure and burp your main butane holding tank afterwards, to blow off any atmosphere that you trapped during transfer, by opening the vapor valve on the tank, with the hose removed.

Okay, that all makes sense except for the pressure gauge reading zero. I am unsure how the pressure gauge is involved if the can is connected to the hose which is connected to the tank.

The butane is injected into the lower collection tank through the vacuum pump hose, not the storage tank. It is the same gauge that you control the rest of the process with.

Ahh, So I am filling the Lil Terp up with Butane, then recovering it with the Appion into the tank?

I'm wondering how many cans I will need in my tank for adequate soaks. 1.5x24" column, 6x12" spool, 50lb refrigerant tank. I'll be using either Vector or Luciene

Is red seal PTFE tape okay for thread seals?

Thanks Buggzy, I feel like this thread is helpful for those with a lot of questions about the basics and are coming around to understanding the building/operating process.

Check it out:

Big thanks to Grey Wolf and his persistence in dealing with all my questions and taking the time to answer. May all the good vibes go his way!

Side note: There was a decent fuck up on my part with the long ferrule being welded in higher than the nipple preventing the ball valve from being screwed on. There is a fix on the way.

About a case. I use about 5 pounds of butane in the "50 lb" tank. That leaves lots of condensing space left to chill down incoming recovered butane.

n-Butane has a specific gravity of .601, so that means that it weighs about .601 X .0361 lb/cu in = .0217 lbs/cu in.

5 lbs butane divided by .0217 lb/ cu in = 230 cu in.

230 cu in = 3769 ml about ~(12.56) 300 ml cans.

Red will work fine, just make sure to put on enough wraps.

As I get close to test driving this thing, I'm wondering how do I know how long and with how much butane do I flood the unit?

My other question is can I utilize the Appion to push the butane into the top of the column rather than inverting the tank?

I've been using about 2 pounds in the Lil Terp. I set the Lil Terp butane storage tank on a refrigeration scale and transfer the butane from an Lp-5.

When I flood the column, I just invert it and drain 100% through the column, which I verify by weighing the storage tank afterwards.

Great read. I will be kitting out my own unit soon with gage, hoses, and recovery tank :woohoo:

Cool!

So having run all of Skunk Pharm Researches Terpenator prototypes extensively as an intern, which one are you planning to build?

My favorite is still the old school MKII with its large recovery pot, and extra heavy bolted columns, but I will be working with the latest iteration of the Terpenator. figuring out a way to have multiple columns and an interchangable heat wrap is first project.

Quick question, would adding Rock salt to the ice bath making it colder speed up the recovery process?

Salt water has a lower freezing temp, and possibly the ice slurry water is lower than 32 degrees because the salt starts melting the ice at a temp lower than 32 degrees. That is the concept behind hand cranked homemade ice cream machines. The colder the bath the better because you are recovering warm vapor that is purged out of the heated oil.

Not quite sure how much more efficient the recovery would be but the lower the temp of the recovery tank the better.

What is the procedure to fill the refrigerant tank for the first time?

To rid the tank of the 15 psi of nitrogen, I will pull a vacuum. Do I want to hold the vacuum in the tank or release the vacuum before connecting to the recovery unit?

We evacuate the Lil Terp tank and fill it with butane without backfilling with air first. We try to keep all air out of our systems, as it contains oxygen and makes an explosive mixture.

We fill the Lil Terp storage tank from our LP-5 or 50# refrigerant recovery tank, by evacutating and then simply by connecting the two by hose and opening the valves. We do so with the storage tank sitting on a refrigerant scale, so as to keep track of progress.
