I highly anticipated Brooklyn's Finest, but it didn't really come close to my expectations. It was similar to Pride & Glory with the dirty cop/good cop theme going on. With the 3 different stories/characters intermingled the way they were I think the movie needed to be longer to be better (think Departed long). Although Don Cheadle was awesome in it.

For crime, what I would suggest is What Doesn't Kill You. The movie is based on a true story, set in South Boston. I like to compare it to a low budget Departed, for simplicity, but that's a little misleading. It's a great movie on its on, not a departed copy cat by any stretch. If you haven't seen it, see it. Highly underrated.

Shutter island was predictable,even if it is complex.
City of God is one of my faves of all time,and i'm really fussy with films.
Seven Samurai..truly amazing film.

Amores Perros - If you're up for subtitles, it's a Mexican movie about 3 different stories that vaguely intersect. Also, the characters' dogs play a significant role in the story. It won a few awards and the same director did similar anthology movies after in 21 Grams and Babel (still haven't watched those, but will).

Animal-straight to DVD Ving Rhames prison movie that was exactly what it should have been.

Big Stan-Rob Schneider is trained by David Carradine in martial arts so he can survive prison rape.
