So im planning an outdoor grow this season, but i wanted to start them inside for 2-4 weeks before setting my babies outside. Ill be Germinating about 10 seeds at a time. So whats a cheap source for getting light to my crops for the fist 2-4 weeks.

Can i just take like a regular lamp, flip it upside down with an 80w bulb on it? Or anyone have any suggestions that would word for what i am trying to do?

As im not into the indoor lingo, what is that and where could i pick one up? Is that just the lights or does it come with a case and holder

CFL= Compact Floro. Light. find them almost anywhere.
The standard light bulb that you might be used to for lighting your house, bedroom, kitchen, ect. wont work. You'll need..(in your case), a florecent(sp?) bulb. However the smaller compact twirly ones...(CFL) will be better suited for you.

right on, i think this is what ill do. :)

Also mylar is like that shinny tinfoil stuff right, and i assume you had the shinny part on the inside to give extra light reflection to your plants? Is this so its just stealth under the mylar or is it actually better to do?

Also is it possible to keep them under the shop light until they show sex? How long is it usually before they show sex?

looks funny saves money

an old pic but the cfl's i use are there
walmart garage light with round aluminum reflector i removed 8$ ea
screw in Y adaptor 1.99$ ea allows for 2 bulbs per fixture
45w=150w or 200w sprial the tubular puts more heat cfl 9$ ea
25w=100w daylight 2 pk 8$ ea

i have 6 light fixtures set up in this manner 70w mixed color spectrum per fixture total 420w ive had 44 plants under them before n/p

2 light fixtures set up as above would veg your 10 plants nicely if you choose CFL's heres some hints and tips i posted while back. http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=29899&page=2&highlight=lowrider heres another link this person gets very impressive results doing CFL's all the way to harvest CFL's are really underated i think http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=31605

I have a 48" 4 tube T-8 fixture just laying on 2 shelf brackets. No fan needed cause there is so little heat. The plants are on 16" wide 48" long boards. I can easily move the light and/or the plant shelf up or down. I keep it up to save my 60+ year old back :sasmokin: Panda plastic curtain. Last fall I vegged my haze plants under it nearly 6 weeks....until they were 24" tall. I had to top them twice though.

You could use a cheaper fixture, any 4 tube 48" tube fixture will work. I really like having that diffuser covering the tubes. It gives the whole shelf a nice even light. The plants can touch the diffuser and not be burned, a big plus IMO. The closer you get those small plants to the light the tighter the node spacing and the more vigorous the plant will grow.

I'll be starting my plants for an outside grow under this light. I have two of them and have had two shelves going before. I like the "track shelving" scheme. Very easy to use and flexible.

good luck

You don't need all that reflective stuff to veg plants. I have since removed that cardboard with foil on it on the left side there in the picture I posted. My shelf today is a plain unpainted board. The off white wall behind the plants. My Panda plastic curtain(not shown in pic as it is up laying on top of the light for the picture) keeps the light from annoying me when I am in my spare bedroom working on my grow or on my computer. I use regular daylight bulbs. The cooler, bluish bulbs make me almost sick. People will tell you that you need 5600K, or 6500K lights, whatever. Well You don't need those cooler color lights. Your plants will veg just fine under anything from 3000K to 6500K.

And yes you can veg them under fluorescent tubes or CFL's till they show preflowers. How long that takes can vary depending on the strain. Indicas will show sooner than many of the more sativa dominant strains. Look for preflowers after 4-5 weeks or so.

Sativas, particularly tropical ones, may never show sex under the typical vegging schemes 24/0, 20/4, 18/6. Photoperiod doesn't mean much to a plant growing under what amounts to a constant 12/12 photoperiod (equatorial sun).

Thanks so much for the info everyone.

I did find 2 48in tube lights in my storage room. they are phillips 32w 2800 lumens each. I will go to home depot tomorrow and see if its cheaper to buy the shop light, or 2 more 48in lights along with a fixture. They both look like they will produce the same results, so ill just go with whatever is cheaper.

Ah i see. When the people posted earlier in this thread that i should get a shoplight from home depot, did they not mean anything i posted above?

I was just looking at the watts and i was like wow thats high. if i get the 250w will it still make my plants stretch like no tomorrow if i only use it for 3-4 weeks.

But i was looking at the site on the 150w cluub thread and i found this.

E-HC1H151Z
HID Floodlight with 120-volt ballast. Includes 150-watt HPS ED17 lamp.
http://www.e-conolight.com/Product/EProductDetail.asp?ProductFamilyID=3&FGNumber=E-HC1H151Z

That is reasonably priced at $40. Would this lamp allow me to use full into the flowering stage as well? Just incase i ever decide to grow indoors.

Well i went to home depot today and i saw a Phillips 250w clear metal halide bulb. It was cheap like $15. Would this work?

How come i couldnt find any HPS lamps at home depot?

Edit: Nevermind, i found some HPS lights like this one. 150w HPS

470a5a8d-5b95-4b3d-846e-7fe41d80009f_400.jpg

Now will that work? its cheap, only $21. I just need something to screw it into. What does a bulb like that screw into?

Im actually just so confused at what exactly i need to do this. theres so many bulb, so many different 150w hps bulbs. some like $6 some like $40. ahhhhhhhhhhh help.
