There is some thing about being in pre flower for a time as the days are shortening .
Veg then flip , misses that month of transition . During the preflower period the alternate branching kicks in . Definitely changes the structure of the flowers if they have a longer period of alternate branching .

So I have done landrace seeds from Ko Tao. Anybody know about that region? The seeds are a decent size. My buddy said they flower forever...

You can take cuttings from long flowering strains in vegetative growth stage and also in early flowering, as these too will readily root and go back into veg mode with a long photo-period, also cloning only the females will halve your work......so start those long flowering varieties from seed now, grow for a month in veg mode, then flower them. Take cuttings from the selected seedlings when they show sex. Once these are rooted and in growth mode, plant outside or in flowering pots. Then take cuttings again from these clones etc etc. This way you will have lots of little plants that are manageable in terms of size, security etc and being 3 months or older these clones you took will trigger into flowering mode quicker and so will finish a little earlier than seedlings. Even little clones will become large if planted out in late Spring ~ late Summer.

there are still areas of Isan (NE Thailand) where there is plenty of growing - but it is not along the edge of the Mekong the way it used to be

and out in the sticks, people will still have a couple of plants in the garden sometimes

but people who are focused on the idea that there is a really clear cut genetic picture are missing the point:

since the '80s much of the commercial growing in mainland SE Asia (Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia) has been structured in a way that meant lots of Thai seeds have been taken to Cambodia and Laos to give to contracted farmers

so, the picture is heavily obscured by that

I have smoked ganja I know was grown around Koh Chang region on the islands that is indistinguishable from Thai from Isan, for example

I really wouldn't put much weight on the idea that there is an island Thai genepool or a lowland Thai genepool or whatever

the only really distinct types I have seen, that differ from the good high quality fundamental Thai type, are the 'Highand Thai' from the far north (Mae Hong Son region) near Burma and the Vientiane Province type I sold variously as Mekong, Red Thai, and Mango Thai (sorry about the confusing names, I don't know what I was thinking)

both those types to my mind show traits of being closer to what Clarke and co call the 'chinensis' genepool: bigger, denser buds; distinc aromas; quite broad leaflets; large seeds --- I am inclined to think of them, in the Clarke taxonomy, as indica var. indica x indica var. chinensis hybrids, whereas the classic Isan Thai type is more of a straight indica var. indica

She's the Chiang Mai Thai line from the Vibes Collective, sourced and reproduced by Rahan many years ago. Huesos and Green Grocer have been preserving her too.

It was one of Rahan's favourite strains along with the Jamaican Lambsbread, South Indian and so on. It's a lovely thai line, quite hermie though...

and an easier way to keep a plant than cloning it is to re-veg it after harvesting. Narrow leaf, long flowering varieties readily re-veg with 18+ hours light per day, make sure to leave a few lower branches with a few little pop corn buds and don't over water it and you will see regrowth in weeks and after 6+ weeks you can take clones, flower it or get rid of it if the high from it was less than what you have.

I grew only Thais for years and were what I started growing with.....if you can manage to grow Thais well, then modern hybrids and everything else will seem so easy.

Double Thai F2

Here's one of a few Double Thai F2's I grew this year. This one ripened the fullest before everything started to reveg last week. It has a sweet lemon caramel smell w/peanuty ashtray as did the others, and the mothers before it.
