well - ive been thinking a lot on why my last 4 flowering plants was not as good as usually. well one positive thing is the brain has been working efficiently.. i mean the buds they look the same but the flavour and potency is not the same, for a comercial grow it wouold most likelly not matter, but im my own only customer and im a very select smoker.... so i thought about my
grow room routine... and how it affects the results
never did i think having a perpetual grow was going to be so hard work, and all just for my own smoking pleasure..
trying to keep my self buzy smoking and growing my smoke, keep after the moms and inbetween there work to earn money to eat etc, doesnt always alove me to have all the time necesary to spend in the grow area, even though i work just a few steps away. many times after a long days work its so easy to just try to do the grow part as quick as possible to be able to then relax, have dinner and surf etc... also sometimes my herb is way too potent and i just get confused or forget the plan mixing nutes...
im human and even how much i ever try to keep my nute schedule perfect, there is every now and then distractions....
anyway main reason for faults in the flowering and veg department is haste. next is measuring devices that are not regularly calibrated, and even though its an easy thing to fix its not allways there is time to do the calibrations, but from now on i have to take it to a new level. i gotto start calibrating once a month ALLWAYS. this will stop ph related issues, wich is the worst thing i think. ec meters dont wander of too much but its a good idea to keep it checked at least.
mixing several different containers of nute mixes leads many times to stress because of time, and also the somplexity of the whole deal grows when there is sveral different stages of growth and bloom. i usuall have plants in all stages of growth and bloom. the solution to this is to simplify. i try to give all plants in veg in-dependent of size same nute dose, and this far they handle it well as long as ec doesnt go over 1.2 too much. plants in flowering is the complicated part, since here the different stages have very different nute needs. the most nute and N dependant part is the stretch, but only during the stretch part. after this high N levels are just counter productive in most strains i tried. sativa dominant plants doesnt really use as much nutes as they seem to at first glance, even though they grow quicker in stretch, and the stretch is longer, i try to not give them stretch nutes for too long, rather i give it for the first weeks, and then i lower the nute dose before i once again give stretch dose, all depending for how long it takes untill growth stagnates. in coco its not necesary to keep feeding same dose blindly since the coco will cushion the highs and lows of the nute schedule. this means yes coco does easilly accumulate nutes and salts, atleast handwatering in big pots (12 liters). in the end all this means i usually do 3 different mixes for the flowering room, one for plants in the stretch stage, one for plants stopped stretch and one for plants in full-on bloom. the plants in full on bloom recieves the PK 13-14 for a while and then they get again the flowering mix for plants that have gone thru stretch. also i should say i do a flushing mix with lower nutes for the plants finishing flowering, but thats normally for only the last weeks or so, and usually i take the avantage to flush with similar nute dose the other plants in flowering also.
this is the MAX ec's... means i do try to keep it a notch belove, and sometimes give 3/4 doses of my schedule
to start off my water i use to mix with has an ec of 0.7 in veg and down to 0,4-0,5 in flowering. this way the plants have access to more calcium from the tapwater during veg, but during flowering the excess of calcium is not good, so i mix in more and more distilled/low mineral well water. the EC of the 1000 year old hand-DUG well at the countryhouse is 0.2 - that is saving me money on distilled water... no doubt
veg - EC 1.2
almost all plants in veg have same need of nutes, independent of size. bigger plants normally just want nutes more often. also its not a good idea in my conditions of Fluorecent tubes to have plants grow too tall too quick. at times i do give lower doses not to keep loading up salts too much. i dont flush in veg.
flowering - stretch EC 1.2
bud build starts EC 1.4 (big doses of PK given at this time) a few times
normal flo mix EC 1.2 (smaller maintenance doses of PK given, 1/3 to 1/5 sometimes)
end of flo mix EC 1.0
in flowering lowering the ec of the base-water aloves to use a bit higher nute dose for example when giving PK 13-14, but at the SAME time to cut EC with a lot. this is beneficial....
i find every time i get lost from this schedule/plan - my results are allways less good. still good but not awesome. bigger levels of N during floWering promotes bigger plants, longer kolas and also in my opinion less flavour and potency. i want to keep my plants as small as possible to keep the kolas short and as close to the lights as possible. i think this is the key to growing good smoke. nlower nutes and strong light. no amount of nutes can ballance up the lack of light intensity.
