nice job on the professional setup there angel eyes... have ya thought about mounting your cfls horizontally.. alot of the light when hung vertically is put out through the side hitting the walls.
keep it up

Hi Maka,

Yep, I've thought about mounting them horizontally, but I've searched a lot and I haven't found any definitive proof that they cast more light horizontally than vertically.

All I did was turn on a CFL and then compare the light from vertical mounting and horizontal mounting, and it seemed like the vertical was brighter, but that's a pretty unscientific test.

If anyone out there has better proof, or can point me in the direction of better proof, I'd be glad to take a look at it. I haven't changed anything in a week or so, and my power drill is getting itchy. :sasmokin:

last summer i read at OG the cfl sweet spot was horizontally also i read there if ya roll a section of tin foil from inside of ballast to inside tip of coil. take this section of foil and roll it dull side out in the shape of a pencil and wedge it between the ballast and tip of coil. this helps to intensify the light the light wont reflect off itself inside to coil but directly out. to help direct this light i built tinfoil dull side towards bulb reflector covered top half of bulb horizontally, and to help from heat build up i placed a small fan 3 inch one to blow across the ballasts and bulb erea which also was plants tops they really loved that. and your right about the 3 inch distance i found the same thing at 3 inch from plants tops mine grew faster and had tighter nodes. also i found myself raising the light every morn 1.5-2 inch at lights on i used a tape messure on the distance from plant to bulb.

lol oh yea duder looks like a nice cab ya have there may ya have many grows from it :)

im in the process of moving so im not grown now but will by end of this month whoooot

Thanks again for all the positive comments from everyone!

I've made a lot of small adjustments and fixes to my cabinet, so I thought I'd post one of those changes. Again, maybe this will inspire someone or give someone an idea sometime down the road.

I've been using the standard shelf that came with my cabinet, with the only modification being a three-inch cut across the back that allowed air to pass up from the darkroom louver, up through the "chimney."

I thought it might be cool to add some extra venting, so I decided to make a new shelf out of pegboard. So, I bought a 2' x 4' sheet of 1/4" pegboard, and I cut three pieces to size, and then I glued them all together to create a laminated pegboard about 3/4" thick. It's been plenty strong enough to hold my 3 gallon container of well-watered soil, and the new setup has lowered temps about three degrees from when I used the solid shelf. Not to mention the improved general circulation... Not too shabby, and kind of a fun project.

Angel Eyes -

Really great work on the cabinet. Too bad ya can't show it off to all yer friends. And I like your laminate shelf. I'm gonna steal your idea in a few months, but in a larger cabinet.

Where did you get the darkroom louvre? I get all over the bay area, so if you can give me (us) an address or phone or name, I'd sure appreciate it. And if you already did - and I missed it - I deserve a whack alongside the head. ;-)

Nice setup.
I'm looking for a cabinet like that, what's the name of it, so I can look for it the next time I'm at IKEA :)

It seems that Angel Eyes has "left the building".

I guess that cabnet was not so stealthy when those plants started to stink!

Nope, still around. I don't feel the need to keep a thread going to satisfy my ego. I just wanted to add to the database of construction ideas, in case someone needed inspiration or information. Let the thread die, for all I care, and then people can access the information using the search function.

Another nope on the stealth and "stink." It's easily handled by a plug-in air freshener/neutralizer that I place on the other side of the room.

Stay positive, folks. Life is easier that way.

angel eyes, i really like your cabinet man... congrats!!! I'm maybe doing one myself... but i wanna use the cabinet for flowering 2 to 4 plants, so i was thiking on using a 150w hps or one of those 125w envirolites that have 10000 lumens or so. I have two major concerns, ventilation and the smell. any sugestions???

Yeah, great grow Angel Eyes, you've got what, maybe 5 grams out of all that work.

The reason you don't need odor control is because you have nothing to control.
