hey dhf, should i still need silica even though my media is calcined diatomaceous earth silica stone?

if im understanding you correctly i should cut the calnit out and just use the base 5-12-26 at the same EC of 1.2?

hey, DH, your plants are looking great! are you using the napa 8822? i've been running with it lately after i got a huge plant in it.

it wasn't just the total weight, the buds seemed individually fatter as well.

thanks d9, that means a lot coming from you. yeah, they are in the napa floor dry. it was all i could get locally so i figured i would give it a go. glad i did. i finally got my res set up with a float valve and a separate top off res. i used my old blumat tank which is a 15 gal food grade drum and i just plumbed in the blumat tubing to the float valve. i didnt have a rubbermaid in my res to slow the flow down but my blumat line had an on/off valve so i have it turned way down so it fills VERY slowly. works perfectly. i came back today and my top off tank was down 10 gal and my control res was at perfect level :)

I`d defer to D9 as far as changing base nute mix w/the calnit just to maintain the 600 ppms/1.2 ec DH....and....

I`m sure the silica based medium will indeed provide a certain amount of absorption throught the rootzone and into the plants eventually , but how much is the X factor as to will it be enough to retard lateral limb snappage in big plants in a certain "late flowering period".....as to where ....

Silicablast provides it @ 5ml per gal start to finish guaranteed while barely affecting any juice mix I ever used....sure it`ll raise ppms and ph minimal amounts , but ......

The end results are well worth it from the overall plant health standpoint , as well as the potassium boost throughout IME with big plants over a decade of Krusty buckets......and ......

I`ve only grown in lava rock and coco so that`s all the experience I have with mediums and silicablast , but in all my yrs I`ve never seen anything but positive results and EVERYONE that knows me will tell yas I don`t preach additives at ALL......

Lil silicablast , sm-90 , and cal/mag plus as a necessity once I swapped over to coco is ALL that I`ve ever run with my trusty old GH 3 part for lotta yrs......anyways....

Keep stroking DH...You`re getting there Bro.....Oh.....Gladta see yas back around more D9..Hope yas`re feelin proper these days......

Peace....DHF.....:ying:.......

it seems like the people running Jack's are getting this plants everything they need....I don't know if it has some si or not. I can say that I didn't add si in my big ppm grow bc I kept forgetting to bring a new bottle over to the rental and I am now having limbs snapping left and right....

Once again.....Otis to the rescue with perfect timing from first hand knowledge and experience.....

Guaranteed silicablast builds stemwall strength and promotes overall plant health , so just tryin ta help you big plant boys......

well, i've never used silica blast and i break a lot of limbs. if i don't tie them up they snap every time.

maybe i'll try some.

although the napa de and turface both have significant amounts of silica in them probably not much is plant available. but who knows without measuring?

true when growing monsters support is key in any case. keep dialing, if you aren't making progress you're doing something wrong.:pumpkin:

I remember my first couple runs with Krusty buckets , I did EVERYTHING I was told to a "T" with chickenwire on the ceilings , opening up the insides and tying every lateral limb up strategically for support cuz I KNEW what was comin when swellage at night blasted off , and I STILL had limbs snappin in between ties as well .....and I went off in the thread like WTF ?.........

Krusty came back with a smart ass remark of you`re doin something wrong in open forum , but I immediately got a pm tellin me to get silicablast and apply @ 5ml per gal start to finish and as long as they were properly supported , limbs wouldn`t snap like that anymore....and I got it....and he was right.....

He used to give just enough knowledge ta leave yas twistin on a vine and comin back beggin for more , but once he knew you the secrets came out in pm........

SM-90 for root rot protection and silicablast are the only 2 additives I ever used for 14-15 yrs til I went full coco dtw , and then calmag plus had to be added for the CEC to be brought under control for the last few yrs till shutdown with well dialed results .......

Since there`s virtually slim to no chance root rot can form and proliferate with PPK`s , I`d say SM-90`s not needed , but it does offer rootzone insect protection @ 5ml per gal if coco is inoculated before plants are put in....

Krusty learned all that shit in the hydroponic veggie greenhouse biz way back in the day , so it`s agriculturally based info and not stoner ingenuity for the record guys........anyways....

I smell breakfast cookin , so Sunday morning wake and bake`s about over ....Silicablast....Getchas some....bet on it....

Ya`ll take care......Freds......:ying:....

Hi, Desert Hydro.

From what we could gather, the effective rate of silica application might be approximately 50-100 ppm. We will not delve into the calculations here, to derive the exact ml/h20 to reach 50 ppm, though it is possible. We never experimented with silica blast, instead protekt, which is bonded to potassium - also adding potassium to the total solution. Silica, or potassium silicate, can also be foliar fed approximately once per 10-14 days. Very little silica, in proportion to the remainder of the solution, or applied as a standalone, is required for potential positive results. As was mentioned above, silica appears to strengthen cell walls, and also reduce powdery mildew and pythium root rot. While silica appears to strengthen cell walls and potentially branches or shoots, anchorage and other structural supports might still be beneficial for larger plants or trees bearing a greater volume of fruit at the ends of those branches.

Best,
/SRGB/

my rockwool plants were suffering from some sort of burn. i think it was from a heavy neem treatment i poured onto the rockwool to kill some bugs that were in it. then again the damage could have been from the bugs too. idk. anyways, it was getting progressively worse and all the fans had completely died off and turned brown/shriveld crispy. i decided to chop them down a week or so early and salvage what i could.

bonsai hero to the rescue! it was awesome! it does a surprisingly good job quite quickly. i will get a full detailed review up in a day or so with dry shots. me and a buddy did 5 plants that were good size and the worst part is since they werent 100% done some were soft and would have been unbearable to trim otherwise. the BH made light work of all of it and then we sent the popcorn through the hand crank salad shredder. im happy with what i salvaged and it makes me look forward to busting out my tree trimming in the near future. im no longer dreading it with these trimmers.

in the box there are 2 plants. the smaller denser buds are tsi fly, and the other side that looks like a lot more is blue dream. lots of good colas even with the burn. im excited for future runs with this blue dream. i bet i can dial her in to 4-5 zips per plant with time. the bag is all FMS ak47 from seed. smells super dank but i wish they could have gone longer. oh well. gonna toss a vert 1k in there and get moving right along.

BTW these were not grown vert. they were in pots of rockwool under a 1k with an air cooled hood. stay tuned for bigger and better things to come!

you will be blown away. ppk and jacks all the way. i picked up some silica just now because it comes recommended for branch strength and my buds are stacking hard! its gonna be like that scene on scarface with the mountain of blow on the table, only this mountain will be green and smell of rotting meat and garlic. chemmy jones ftw!

gotta get to work building my veg ppk! gonna rock the 1k vert in a 6x6 and let it rip. i may decide to do an 8 site but that would mean i need 2 more tents and 10 more lights................. :)

I don't doubt it.

I too use silica but not on Scrog grows cause i like the branches to be bendable, silica seemed to harden them pretty quick for me.

nothin to see here folks, move along :)

i would be ecstatic if i hit the GPW goal for once. i never have. the closest ive been is about .66 or so. if i could get at least .75+ that would be good. its all looking great so far. they seem happy and healthy.

holy crap those bitches got huge! nice work bro.

I think im going to try a PPK flat garden doing scrog for the first round, i have always liked how scrog buds were uniform and it will reduce the electrical usage.

Fun thread DH.

Looking to get my PPK game back on. 1st run in coco gave me some problems with tailpiece pluggage so I'm looking to do it right this time. Still managed to get 1.7lb per plant (7 plants) around 6400w (12lbs total) so I'm stoked to see what I can get out of turface/napa. I should be able to crush 1GPW if even a troubled garden gave me that (.85GPW)

I've been using Jacks + CalNit on my wand fed coco plants and keep having Mg- trouble. A small mom in RW block loves the stuff with perfect health, but my coco plants are always droopy with purple petioles and crinkled/twisted leaves. They look good under T5 and then go into a funk immediately after hitting the HPS room.

I'll likely run Napa 8822, as I can't seem to source turface here. I see you washed it.. did you screen it as well? Preparation of the Napa has been what is holding me back. I just instinctively throw rooted clones into coco pots and then never get around the prepping some napa. I feel like I'm stuck in a loop running coco and want to break free!

I see Jacks raised their prices. Was paying $87 after shipping for the Jacks+CalNit combo... this time it came to $114. 1st world problem...I think it'll cost almost a buck now to fill a 50gal barrel. lol

Looking to scoop up some of these bonsai heros everyone's repping now a days. Where is the best place to order them? I see the prices vary widely across the web.. wanna make sure I get the correct ones and not some knockoffs.
