can someone help me with how to speed up my PC again. it seems clogged up and running slower than usual. i defragmented the drive and did a disk cleanup. what can i do to get it running like usual?

This might help:

Man Id love to help , however there are always so many variables (god I love that word) with different peoples different setups that the link above might be of some help. If the link doesnt work just type this into google "how to make my computer run faster"

joe thats quite a system you got there. you say you are having trouble running crysis at very high? you might need faster ram or somethingim running 4-4-4-12 ram right now thats pretty low latency and i forgot how much you said you had but if your running vista then you need 4gb (at least i use it and it works for me) i am planning on getting the new un buggy phenom when it comes out the quad 3.25 core running at 10ghz overall should set me straight for a while.

My birthday's coming up & I told the old lady all I want is some cash to get me a 500 mhz (probably 128 mb ram..hopefully) computer at this local place. I live on Guam and they're charging $200 for a 500 mh computer with an old CRT. I'd just order from ebay, but I don't have a credit card. I even thought about starting a business out here that sold used computers. I could probably get away with selling a 1.0 gh p3 w/ a crt for like $200. But my credit sucks and I don't have any money...so that idea is stalled for the moment.

Edit: Oh....but on that old ass computer that I want....I'll run Slackware 12 with Fluxbox or something. More than likely wireless network because I don't feel like running cat5 from the other side of the house. It'll do the job, and I'll start to upgrade it slowly. I love my laptop, but even I won't **** with laptop internals(not talking about memory). It's so much easier to clean/fix a tower.

HELP!!!

i have a dell inspiron 6000 laptop and it crashed on me. then it went to a blue screen and said it was recovering memory and doing a bunch of checks. after that, it rebooted and when it came to the desktop, everything was gone (shortcuts, taskbar, startbar).

i then pulled up the task manager and saw that explorer.exe was running. shortly after i got an error message saying that windows explorer, not internet explorer, was experiencing problems and needs to close, send or don't send report as options.

after a few days w/o the laptop, i caved and decided to see how bad best buy's "geek squad" were gonna pwn me for my bankroll. they want $200 to fix it!

please help me. what options do i have at this point? my warranty already expired. if possible, i cannot lose my music and important data files.

lc00p4, dude it's quite easy, and I'd be glad to help you. Do you have a OS disk that came with the PC? If you have the original disk, reformat your HD and do a fresh install with that disk. Before doing so, make sure you have an active s/n or crack for whatever you decided to use.

IMO, if your box is 5+ years old, get a new one. It's heaven. Let us know what OS you run and what your machine is like. Specs and whatnot.

I run one PC, strictly for pissing off the RIAA behind a proxy. My other 2 computers are Macbook Pros, both SR processors and 2 gigs. I hope Hitachi makes that new 500gb HD for MBPs soon :)

5 years ... dang ... I wouldn't even go more than 5 months with the same setup. That's just me though. I'm stupid like that :joint:

koopa. I've got an inspiron(1300) and it's running cherry. Are you running XP or win98/2k on that? You said that your start bar is gone? Have you tried to hit the "Windows" key on your keyboard to see if anything comes up? If you're running 98/NT, you should be able to boot to a DOS prompt. This will at least let you see what is still on your system. I'd imagine that if things are actually gone from your hard drive, it's a hard drive problem. I'd also advise trying "safe mode" to see if she'll fully boot up in that. Hit f8 repeatedly right at startup(around the time that your computer tells you to hit "del" to enter startup). You don't HAVE to hit it repeatedly, but it's easy to miss, so I always just hit it a bunch of times. This will give you boot options(safe mode, possibly dos prompt, etc). If you can, try all of these things and write down whatever errors you get. Let us know what they say, and I'll try to see what else may help.

hey everybody. luckily i still got a desktop computer at my parent's house.

it says:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

error signature:

AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156
ModName: rpcrt4.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.3173
Offset: 00085a90

does this help? i've rebooted in safe mode and all i saw was a black screen with the words "safe mode" in each of the corners and no shortcuts, taskbar, or startbar. nothing comes up when i hit the windows button either.

the geek dudes said it was for sure corrupted. i also don't have the OS disk or whatever because my computer just came with everything preinstalled. btw, running windows xp service pack 2.

i appreciate the help very much! thanks...

OGraq, I'm like you, my set-up changes all the time. Especially running my web-site and working on headers and whatnot in CS3. But you gotta remember, not everyone is a savvy as we are and not to mention, most can't afford a MBP or workstation. So we gotta help em out.

lc00p4,
Do you have the cash for a new PC or laptop? What year did you get it? Can you somehow manage to get to the start menu? Geek Squad (which is a total rip-off IMO) is correct, it's def corrupted. If you get to start, do this.

"Start"-->"Run"-->SFC /SCANNOW, then tell me what you get.

Another thing, have you downloaded any shell extension, WINRAR for example? What about trying to use your Event Viewer? "My computer"-->Select Manage--->Event Viewer, write down all of the error messages in those three sections you see and let me know. If none of that works, send me a safe addy through PM and i'll get you a clean install disk.

That's sweet right there! I always wanted a mac but never made the plunge.

Maybe when I recoup some of the money the man stole from me I will

lcoop try doing a reformat! start from scratch, i always reformat once a year no matter what. I constantly back up all my files on DVD-R's and when im compelled to i just reformat and wipe out my hard drive, and start from scratch installing everything fromt he begining. Sure its hard work but it assures you get factory new performance and with a new start you pick and choose what you want to put back onto your hard drive!! i havent reformatted in two years and my computer is working 80-90% as fast as when i first built it...

Also try downloading spybot and adware (you can find them for free online) and run them both see what they come up with...also disc doctor and norton 360 should help you keep things running smoothly! good luck!

backing up is a MUST, especially for me since I never keep a computer more than a couple months. All my data gets transferred to my external HDD, i love my media drive because you just install the bay into the computer and it slides in and out of the computer no need for cables. also it doubles as an external so for my laptops just plug it up to the usb for backups.

I keep all my programs and files used for New setups when I get a new computer in a seperate folder, just go into the folder when i get a new box and install my progs.

my current setup has RAID so I've got tripple protection, even if the HDD gets corrupt all the data is stored on 3 HDD's not 1 ;)
