I've 2 american bulldogs and 2 staffi's, a proper little pack.
A question for US dog owners, why do you crop dogs ears?
It's banned this side of the pond so is docking tails. I cant see any benefit from either but would like to hear your thoughts on it.
P.S I'm not trying to start any sort of shit storm here.

Not all of us do. I would never crops dogs ears or tail as they are used for smell and balance. Not to mention the expressions they give with their ears.

That's my take on it too Snake, its pits that seem to have it done mostly so I thought it was something to do with breed standards but not to sure.

I had a incredible irish setter back in the '70's. almost human intelligence at times.

little kid next door was spoofing me. I told him that if he didn't quit I would sic my dog on him ( I was spoofing back). he said "that dog wouldn't touch me".

I opened the car door and said "Dynamo, get 'em!".

to the shock of both me and the friendly next door kid ( a little 'dennis the menace') my dog Dynamo jets outa the car and charges the kid. the kid's mouth does the :0 thing and all you see is his asshole and elbows while Dynamo chases him down, stands up and places his paws on the kid's back shoulders and takes the kid down to the pavement. Dynamo then gently nipped the kids butt and turned back to the car grinning ear to ear, tongue hanging out.

i'm totally mortified. I think I just lost my dog to canine patrol. I look up at the kids house to see if his parents see what just happened. they were both sitting down on the front porch in their rocking chairs laughing their ass off. :)

wouldn't go down like that today i'm sad to say.

Some veterinarians promote the practi$e of cropping ears saying that it protects from ear infections. I'm sure it's in the AKC standards for some breeds. But it's an outdated procedure that really only serviced fighting dogs and even most dog fighters would say it doesn't help.

Any cultured or conscious person today wouldn't crop a dog's ears. Seeing someone that crops a dogs ears shows their own ignorances and inflated self projection issues.:peacock:

I do think its a visual shock seeing european boxers, rottweilers and weimeraners with long tails. not that its a bad thing, im just so used to seeing them docked as well.

One of the worst most offensive things that vets do is when they de-bark a dog. Declawing cats is another good one. Neutering and spaying... that's a bitch too... lots of things get snipped & removed from our so called best friends.

thanks for the info primalhaze I'm glad to see it's not as widespread as I thought it was.

A lot of cropping and docking was done because it was defined as part of the standard of the breed. More aesthetics than anything else.
