Recently in Hubblemans aliens yea or nay thread I brought up this topic in response to aliens coming and what problems they would see.

My position is that we are far over populated right now but many people feel that we shouldn't worry about it and just breed more.

IMHO many people lead to problems like in the movie Idiocracy and the fact that so many don't even see our population as a problem surprises me. Ever wince I was a kid I have been pretty sure that we don't have a plan at all.

So I did this poll and I just want more people to realize what I think our biggest long term problem is.

Some people say let nature take it's course but nature is very severe cutting population of a species by 90 percent when a group gets bigger than the food supplies. Eventually a famine will come.

So do we take control of our planet or just keep breeding mindlessly until the greenhouse gases over heat the planet causing drought, famine and war or course.

I want to convince people not to stop having children but to accept the reality we have created for ourselves because you don't have to be Buddhist to see cause and effect happen predictably.

So go ahead and tell us why this is or isn't a problem. Let's agree to be respectful to each other...:tiphat:

Well you got my interest. :)

I have long thought that there were just too many people on this planet!

Just try getting away to someplace peaceful and quiet where there are no traces of other people... for most people that is a distinct impossibility.

Science has brought us solutions to feed increasingly more people, but resources are finite here on our planet, and the system is already falling apart. The stress of our over-population is evident all around you if you open your eyes and look.

On the other hand I am always surprised by mankind's tenacity and cleverness in overcoming problems. Perhaps they will create some genetically modified food substances to feed even more people! Or wait, that already happened :)

All kidding aside, life on an over-populated planet filled with people choking on petro-chemical fumes as we burn the last drops of oil out of the ground, fighting for the last scraps of food and a sip of clean water is not a pleasant thought :(

What I find hard to understand is why people often think over population is not a problem.

My goal here is only to increase awareness of what I see as the underlying problem to most of the long term problems we face. Like pollution and diminishing resources.

The Earth is only just so big an Eco system and it is being changed by so many of us eating and driving and using electricity etc.

Perhaps we can solve any problem and feed 100 billion people and keep the planet clean. Would you want to do that? I can't see why but some people say it's possible.

Maybe we should figure out how to do that first. The population is nearing 7 billion and it doubles about every 35 years!!!

We see many problems of too many people right now. How can we ignore our breeding habits? Maybe America has slow growth of population but this is one world and we are all in it together.

I wouldn't create super viruses to solve the problem but they have them ready I suppose. Long ago USA defense contract proves thy had a retro virus engineered in 1974 and it was HIV. The guy who isolated the virus ten years later was the engineer of the virus but HIV wasn't fast enough for their plans. The book Emerging Viruses presents some evidence of this project. They even let the disease out by sending the test animals to Africa to another research lab who had no idea they had HIV.

In Florida gay men were given hep b vaccines with HIV in them. But that's not what I am trying to get you to believe. Don't believe that if you like but do believe that too many rats in one small box leads to one thing. They eat each other until just a few tough ones survive.

Going to places like Wal-Mart and Costco prove that overpopulation is a problem. Just do some people watching at these places.... idiots everywhere, who all want Sam's piggy bank because they have 12 children.

I think over population is a myth created by the elite to make you think you should accept living in tiny cubes, stacked like cord wood and use as little of their resources as possible. Be a sheep and nothing more. I do think our cities are over populated, but this has more to do with poor city design and cities that are just out of date. We need to use our resources better and build cities with more eco friendly design. There is still much of this planet that is either uninhabited or very sparsely inhabited. We need to learn to reduce, reuse and recycle and find better ways to power our planet. But this is hard when they say they want to be oil free but oil has the entire world by the balls and they dont want to give up on it until its all gone and no more wealth can be reaped from it.

Now what is a problem is the abundance of stupid useless mouth breathers that inhabit this planet, people with no skills, that contribute nothing to society and just leach government assistance. The problem is these types breed like 4x faster then your average person with a brain, they pump out kids because the more kids they have the more social benefits they get.

If you can't feed em don't breed em.

well I have seen a trend homosexualality is a definate sign that nature is kinda taking it's course, nothing against them they are mostly good people just an observation...still puzzling why lesbians want to have kids instead of adopting?

the matriarch mouse a mouse colony secrete a hormone that causes sterility when she senses the population is too high

well before I had heard it i had the same theory that homosexuality was a resoponse to population, but that confrimed my suspicions(at least for me)

Our diet and environment will make most people sterile in a handful of generations. I remember the United Nations or some other body even casting a report on this some time ago. I'll try to find it.

I don' t think over population is the issue...the issue is with how the majority of the population populates this earth. We have turned into a wastefull, excessive, consumer driven type mindset. Nothing is made to last anymore...its all waste and replace. If everyone got back to taking care of thier own...it wouldn't be a problem. Go back in time before the industrial revolution and before there were major means of trade like there is now...people had a sense of comunity and taking care of there own(and themselves). Now most people rely on goods being brought in from some you don't know, from who knows where or how long it traveld to get there, no care for the consumer etc...If people relied more on themselves and less on others it would be a way different place. It doesn't take much area to raise/grow most your own food...in excess of what you need.

I'll probably get flamed for this but increased homosexuality can be explained by the increased amount of gender bending chemicals that are found in our diets (and of course our larger population/more open western society). Estrogen mimickers are in ALL plastic and canned goods and about a hundred other things.

we are to overprotected and pampered.
the world is a dangerous place with sharp edges. man tries to round those edges and mitigate the dangers that allow for only the fittest to survive. as a direct result the unfit survive at an untenable rate.
population growth is exponential. that is where people fail to see a problem as they do not understand the exponential nature of population dynamics and continue swaddling the world because "every life is precious".
every death serves a purpose and we need a lot more of them!
maybe a coupla more wars?
we are only having like 7 or 8 now(its hard to count)maybe with iran and N.Korea we can get some of the more populated areas under control..

Homosexuality? It does seem responsible in an over populated world to have no children and everyone needs someone to love but a response to over population or chemicals?

More have come out because it's safer now. Let's stick to the topic and not get into a gay or any argument eh? Lol...

Interesting thoughts though.

Now the one anti welfare baby guy sounds like he is sick of creating Idiocracy and I agree to a point. We actually pay ladies to have kids with our system but it was all good intentioned to help single moms pay expenses.

Funny how those against abortion are always for capital punishment and even against birth control. Religion deluded us into thinking God wants us to over populate with no plans.

I am for a womans right to choose but at some point in the pregnancy the baby becomes viable and to me that is a person. Life always starts at conception but it's the potential of becoming a person. Shouldn't babies with severe birth defects be terminated?

Shouldn't the terminally I'll be allowed to choose to die with dignity? We don't want Soylent Green encouraging old folks to suicide but we all die eventually and why should we have to give all we have saved for our families in a futile effort to survive until the very last at all costs?

Half the health care dollars are spent on the last year of peoples lives...what a waste.

So I am for birth control, abortion, homosexuality, adoption as a voluntary option and yes...Euthanasia. Education of the third world and encouraging a world wide effort to control population growth.

China is over populated but they are the only country forcing birth control so went they trying even a bit too hard?

I believe the problem lies with believing in central planning(government),and giving them the power, wich we never had as individuals to begin with, to say who should live and who should die when its inconveiniant, its right up hitlers ally.are we already facist? for the most part ,yes, do we have to make it worst ? no.

take this for a example of whats coming,
you never had a choice to pay taxes and do your part LOL, but since you and others are forced to pay it and in vast ammounts, well your kids belong to the state.or they soon will be when you do something the state doesn't approve of like growing.

back on topic,
so if you want to save resource stop printing the money to misallocate them.try telling that to mr bernake and the mathematical mandarins in our best colleges.

so in all I think government is creating a problem wich causes us to panic and ask for more central planning, and its a huge mistake that will backfire.

World Population Growth Map...Throughout History

World Population Growth Map...Throughout History

I remember seeing this at an Earth Day event about 20 years ago. It totally blew me away. It's 7 minutes long, but watch the entire thing. Nothing else I've ever heard or seen has explained what is happening on our planet as thoroughly as this. More people = more babies = more waste....you get the picture.

I would enlarge it to full screen to see it best.

Erodision of Freedom is an issue not population. Continue the march deeper and deeper into less freedom and population will be an issue.

maybe humans should be killed once they reach 70? or be sterilised like Bill Gates has been doing in Africa?

maybe like the georgia guide stones advocate the human race should be cut down to a few hundred million?

220px-Georgia_guidestones.jpg

however you think it can be done it wont be a quick fix if you do panic about population and start getting genocidal so imo you might as well do a better job of running the planet, because with a population that was educated instead of dumbed down they could work to encourage nature and not all run around in cars commuting to skyscrapers to maintain a fake money system.. we only need to take a few lessons from the past and we could be happy..

or waste another hundred years thinking and planning how we are going to cut the humans back whilst the pollution goes on and the oceans are full of mercury and bisphenol a and the unsustainable lifestyle we have continues on.. it only takes one generation to change the world but look at what we are doing to the people, stealing all their money and creating a greater divide within society.. it's upside down..

chicken or the egg.. i say start with the egg and fix the problem at its root which is pollution instead of culling the chicken..

back in Gaul no town was allowed to be over a certain population to prevent the inevitable damage to humans and environment..

i always thought that two children should be a limit but what if you want a girl and you had two boys? what if people start killing one child for being the wrong sex like they did in china??,, its genocide and fascist so there must be a better way.. we think we are so advanced, looking down our noses at our animal cousins,, but really we're not..

I think the earth is capable of sheltering and feeding as many living beings as there may be at any given time.

whether we assist in such is a whole other question.

peace

oh btw, BOG, you forgot to add another poll option: BOG you're talking crazy, again.
