Hey. This is a subject that has been bugging me for awhile. When do you count the first day of flower? is it when you switch to 12/12 or when you see the first pistil? For example if a strain calls for a 55-60 day flowering period do you start the 55 days from 12/12 or first pistil? I know overall it is just a guideline and you harvest when your girl's trichs tell you to.

Thx,
pce

flowering starts when the first buds (not first pistil) start to form, which is 10-14days after flipping to 12/12.
count from any earlier and you are cutting down too early :)

Sorry, do not agree, flowerlng starts when l say lt starts, and that's when l go 12/12. Just because you cannot lmmedlatly see results, does not mean flowerlng as not started.

that 10-14day period is when its starting to flower. i bet you must pull your 55day strains at 45days or do you like to give them 65? ;)

I call the day I flip clones day 1.

I call the day I see first pistils on a seedplant day 1.

I generally veg seedplants for ~3weeks before I flip them, and they take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks to show. It GENERALLY works out that if a seedplant goes 60 days from first flower (for example), clones of that plant will be ready after 60 days 12/12 IME. Sativa doms seem to vary a lil more. I've never vegged a plant long enough to show sex in 20/4 (prolly 5-6 weeks is the longest I've waited to flip).

well i had always start count down when they start to bud up aswell, not in pre flower stadium but when i see the plant and there is no doubt about the girl is in bloom, i start the count down :D if i should start the count down when i flip em to 12/12 i will like smokeymacpot says start the count down way to early ...a plant is not in flower when you flip em in 12/12 you flip em to 12/12 because u want them to flower ...so i think its wrong to count from day 1 in 12/12 ...But hey what ewer works for you :D thats what counts....But when you buy some seeds and they write on them they need from 55-60 days in flower , is it then in 55-60 days under 12/12? that i would like to know :D

I switch to 12/12 let them go until they are done. No counting days, just go until they are ripe to your liking. But that's just me.

Based on most seeds I've grown, starting at two weeks after the flip is the most accurate measure. If a seed pack says 8 weeks, they'll usually go 10+ weeks from the flip.

I think most of the grow logs on this site measure from the flip just to be consistent.

I agree, just let em cook until they're done, no need to really count days. I usually just start paying close attention at 2 months.

Sorry, if you start counting the day you flip to 12/12 as when flowering starts, that's the same thing as saying that human beings, everyone of us, becomes sexually mature on our twelfth birthday. We all mature sexually at different times, and so do the plants. So the only way to accurately ascertain "flowering," or sexual maturity, is by observing the plant for signs...which are pistils.

Pistils is pre flowers right? And pre flowers in my brain means before it go into flower :D and thats why i wait 4 her to bud a lil bit up...:D

My day 1 is when I flip to 12/12 in those first weeks they strech a lot which is also a sign of starting of flowering, but hey to each his own.

I do not rely that much on the counting of days anyways, watching the trichs works better for me.

The time period from when you flip till blooming starts is called the "transition phase". Changing from vegetative growth to flowering. The change in the light cycle is a signal to the plant to start the transition. Its not complete till flowers are showing. Then your flowering...mitsu

But what if I see pistols in veg? I think there are two things to distinguish here as someone said earlier and that is an immature plant from seed vs. a clone or mature plant from seed. One shows pistols and one doesn't...so is it safe to say that 12/12 for a mature plants/clone is day 1-3 where is an immature isn't til you see pistols?

In either case going by days/times/look of plants is just winging it, trichs will USUALLY tell you all you need to know, 95% of the time. If I do count I usually wait 5 days from flipping for a mature/clone and 5 days after an immature has shown sex to start.

Slightly over-ripe buds beats out immature buds any day of the week in my book.
