PNW Growers- Redux

Kaze, I'd strongly recommend staying on the wet side of the Cascades for your grow, I've done it on both sides and the West side is far easier to accomplish.

3town and I have been thinking about giving Steelhead a try, any one out there in the PacNW fish for steelies?
Most of my fishing gear is oriented towards ultra-lite trout fishing, so I need to get a new rod and reel. What size, action, lbs test, etc should we be looking for?
Sorry this if off the weed topic, but it is a PacNW topic for sure LOL!

klaze-I agree with haxixe, I would take a hard look at the west slope, the east side is harsh, I've driven through snow in June going over Santiam pass.
Maybe even look towards the coastal range as a possibility?

I don't know much abut steelie fishing but I've done it a few times. I remember one day in the foothills, hip waders on in the river, clear but colder than you name it, hike through snow to get to the spot, there's a salmon run coinciding with the metalheads coming in. The trees are studded with bald eagles, there's sea run cuts in too to eat the salmon eggs... great fishing experience.

An old stout Fenwick glass rod and a middling Shimano reel seemed to work fine, though I gather the serious guys have special gear, stay down in the flats and driftboat.

Trying to drag this back OT... fishing can be a great opportunity to scout.

Yeah, I find most of my moutain locations when I hike to fishing spots in the Cascade mountains' many Wilderness areas, most steelhead locations in my area would have too much access for jack-asses for my taste, I try to stay out of the lower valleys if I can.

Thats a problem in my area, the population density is high for my liking, finding a remote location can be a bit tough, and even when you do, the popularity of antler hunting keeps many nice locations kinda hard to use.

BackCountry, how do you find your remote fishing spots? Do you have maps, go off of word of mouth or self discovery? I have been looking for good map's of my area watershed's, I started hikeing around my area but I am running into the population density thing as well. Not that the area I live in is very populous but there's property's here and there all over. Time is very valuable these days, just does not seem to be enough of it to go around.

Temps have droped like crazy this week, suposed to be around 7 deg tonight.

Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

SS-for fishing, its word of mouth, and off maps. But most of my plots are down at lower elevations, I find those by driving alot of logging roads(mostly BLM), and pouring over all the maps I can get, looking for spots where the roads are few, and in not so good shape.

throw in some beer and a bowl..:woohoo:...damn good time!!

A good bake is in order but you don't want to be drinking beer in a winter swollen river in hipwaders in the freezing cold. It's a little dangerous to do frankly under any circumstances and maintaining balance is hard enough in a strong current stone sober...

I seem to be in the minority, but I've always thought weed and fishing were a much more natural combination than beer and fishing.

I love having a good buzz and a good smoke when fishing. I dont get trashed if the situation requires balance, but I can maintain with a good buzz.

I'm gonna have to agree with Haxixe. Don't get me wrong, beer makes everything nice, but being out in the water in this cold ass weather, a beer, much less anything really cold to drink is gonna make your ass that much colder. If it were warmer, and especially bank fishing, beer is great, almost a necessity! But no matter what, smoking while fishing is essential! But yeah man, a nice cold beer (Budweiser) almost anytime is GGRRRRRREEEEEEEAAAAAAATTTTTTT!

Sounds like a winning idea.... off to the 'fridge!

Hey Klaze, this bud and BUD's for you! Nothing like putting in 8 hours for the man then coming home to a cooley! Hope it was as good for you (and everyone else in the same situation) as it was for me!

My freinds call a bowl while fishing, "getting your fish eye on", LOL!
I don't think I have been without weed while fishing in longer than I can remember.

You wake up at 5:30am, at 8000 feet in the mountains, 8 hours from anywhere. Its stone quiet, the wind is still, only just now is it brite enough to see.
You look at the lake, smooth but for the trout rising for bugs. Reflected moutain peaks sway and ripple. You reach for your boots, inside is a sock.
In the rolled up sock you find a small glass pipe, a lighter, and a film canister of Herb. You stuff a piece in, light it up, and take a toke, then back in the sock and into the camera bag.
You grab your rod, camera pack, and a small box of lures, and as you head down to the lake you feel the world get lighter, and you have not a care in the world......

I can smell the fresh morning air....brings back memories of AK, what a bad ass place that was to get high and do a little fishing and camping. My experiences were with the gentle flow of glacier fed rivers. It was always so intensly quiet too, no man made sounds just nature....
wait a sec....
what was that??...
*blub blub blub blub*

Damn dude, you should be a poet, hehe. Wake 'N Bake out in Nature, early early in the morning when its silent is the best. I've never been out in no hills like you have, Im sure, but from what I have done, that could very well be one of the best smoking situations. Like you said, fresh morning not a sound and everything is mellow. Not a care in the world. What it must feel like... Well Im smokin!

Thanks BackCountry, I have been scouring maps on the internet but for anything good I think I'm going to have to go to the bait shop and buy a map. I'll go pick one up this weekend, would be nice to know the area any way. Beautiful memories Bro. I like the Fish Eye. I have not done much fishing, last year was my first and I just kind of went out to relax, didn't change lure's but maybe once all year, didn't catch anything either but it was very peaceful. I think I will research a little better this year I bet it's a blast when you actually catch stuff :) . LOL Just kidding I fished as a kid but that was quite some time ago, did some fly fishing once in AK that was freaking awsome. That was about 17 years ago though, WOW time fly's!

One question though, does anyone ever question you in your vehicle way out on BLM, or fire roads? My big worry is someone seeing my car out in the middle of nowhere and investigating. A dirt bike or a quad would be sweet, just by how much teritory you could cover would more than pay for the inital investment. Let's see at $40 an eighth, smoking a quarter a week for 52 weeks is $4160 a year you could save. Dam weed's expencive!

Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

yeah, just plain painfull. Thinking about that makes me want to get growing that much faster. It also makes me wonder about changing my major to botanical genetics...a little engineering here and there along the cannabis gnome, and what do you know - seed to mature in about 2 weeks HAHA.

Yeah I have not bought in a while but have been out for a week or so, when I made some calls I was seriously dissapointed! "Sorry the price is $40 and eighth, because that's what I can get" OUCH! Where's the brotherly love? Problem is that I couldn't even find quality like I'm used to, let alone afford it.

No, I don't feel weird at all, people go out their for all kinds of stuff. Foraging, scouting for hunting, shooting guns, 4 wheeling, or just plain going for a drive. If the road isn't posted NoTrespassing, then you have no reason to fear. People do just go for drives, I have many a time for non-weed related things(not many these days! LOL!). And usually in a regular car.

Anyways, get aquainted with your local public properties. A good way would be to go to your local BLM office, and buy any maps of the area that look interesting. Go also to your local National forest service office and do the same. Its not a red flag at all, don't be affraid that you will stand out, if nothing else just say you are new to the area, and want to see the lay of the land, maybe for hiking or hunting purposes?

Anyways, public land, away from obvious people magnets(parks, campgrounds, monuments, popular fishing rivers/lakes, etc.), is where you want to grow. Commercial timber properties are good too.
Pretty much get away from places where people live near by in the rural areas(Private property). Look for a area with a high density of public land. The fewer people living near by, the better. And the fewer roads/marked trails the better.

A place near enough to water, but not too close would be good too, in case you need to water by hand. This just depends on your tactics/strategy.

Anyways, early day tomarrow! Night Bros!!
