Pinstripe's 2nd try: PC case + 22W LED

lol dude Id love to sample her for you. I gotta say despite the probs she looks mighty impressive. As for your water at least let it sit out overnight to let some of the chlorine evaporate off. I used to use really hard chlorinated water as well and end up with MG probs. Keep up the good work she's lookin fine

Nice grow man, considering LEDs myself.

Quick question about that:
Which combination of leds (color\nm) and driver did you use?

Why not just attach the leds directly to the aluminum top of the PC case (heatsink)?

@pinstripe, been reading your thread with great interest. Your resourcefulness is inspiring. First, I am a scientist not a grower so my knowledge is theoretical rather than applied. I have followed a few good and mostly bad threads on LEDs. I can say there is a lot on misconceptions out there but knna over at Garden cure is the best so far. So if you don't mind I have a few questions.

My understanding is that the LEDs used so far, at some ratio of blue to red, are great for veg and not so good for flowering. Is this correct? If this is true then you might want to consider reading the thread below by adding UVB for flowering. It's really good and indifferent is quite knowledgeable.

What I am after is the why LEDs are not good at flowering and have some ideas.

Thanks

hey pinstripe this is a very impressive grow and it looks like you will get a good yield of bud from it - ill definitely be following this along to see how it finishes :)

DrLight - thats a great thread, but UV doesnt really contribute to bud density - just potency. you'll find that HPS has no UV either. i would also discagree that LED is no good for flowering from my limited experience of them so far - having said that i am more of a grower than an expert in electronics :)

@VerdantGreen. Yes, HPS has very low levels of UVA and UVB is non existent. But the Sun does and isn't that the best light source of all? (I understand chlorophyll adsorption spectra).

Also from what I have read in several threads, the consensus appears to be unfavorable using LEDs for flowering. Do you think this perception is changing?

Dr Light, i think LEDs will get better all the time, but they also carry a lot of 'baggage' from not having been up to it in the past - so people that tried them a few years ago will have made their decision then. not to hijack pinstripe's thread, but i just finished my first LED grow (63w) and found them very good, 1g/watt from a haze dom low yielding strain and bud potency at least as good, if not a bit better than HPS. there is a link in my sig.

pinstripe - ill be back to read your thread more thoroughly later :)

I think one of the reasons why pinstripe is getting successful results is the high light flux. According to this paper, you need about 35W of sunlight per square foot for maximum rate of photosynthesis. Given that red and blue light comprises about 40% of the spectrum then 14W/sq.ft. would do it. So in his 13"x7" footprint he's getting about 35W/sq.ft. (22W/0.63 sq.ft.) not calculating in losses it's good enough.

Hows everything going Pinstripe? Finally got my light built. Time to play around a bit.

hi i am new at this. is this enough for 1-2 lowryders 2

14w 225 led
60 blue light LED s (465nm)
165 red light LED s (650nm)

Wow! Thanks for the good vibes and comments, everybody! It's very nice to see you guys stopping by :)

DrLight - Hey bro! Just like you I got more theory than experience, not a scientist though :D Read a lot but don't grow that much. I'm just happy I made it to harvest with these plants.
So I totally agree with VerdantGreen. A few years ago, LED grow lights were still toys and performed accordingly. Compared to what we have today, the LEDs in the UFOs 3-4 years back probably were terribly inefficient.
I've seen decent LED grows with only blue and 625nm light, so I'm sure too low light flux is the key stone to why some LED lamps aren't performing well.

Also bear in mind the average efficiency of the LEDs my light has is about 25%. So the plants get roughly 5.5W of usable light to play around with ;)

Hey there, zanza! That LED panel will most likely not be enough for two LR#2s. The LEDs in this light I have are probably much more efficient than the ones in that panel.

TIMBER!

This weekend I had a sample that turned out great, so now the plants are all down :) The ground up sample I had would almost cover a penny, and 3 hits had me wonderfully stoned for 2.5-3 hrs.

I burst out laughing when I had all the buds in front of me this morning. What the hell am I gonna do with all this weed?! :D

The most dense bud that probably hogged all the nutes:

Congrats dude! That's just amazing! I'm dying to see the dry-weight of those.

I'm at ~3 weeks from preflowers in a far larger PC, also with HESI and I'd be lucky to reach 1/4th of your yield.

You've got talent.
