Photo Essay: Calcined DE as Rooting Medium

not the same as food grade DE though right?

I dont think food grade DE is calcined. Once it gets calcined, it converts from amorphous silica to crystaline silica.

Glass and naturally occurring DE are amorphous form of silica (lacks a crystaline structure).

Calcined DE is crystaline.

I'm going to give it a try for cloning. I'm almost out of perlite and something new is cool.

Hiya ML,

I found this pdf today and thought I'd post it. Looks like the calcined DE is hyper porous if I'm reading this comparison correctly.

rooted another species of plant in calcined DE, love this stuff for propagation, not really in soils because of price. i can reuse the rooting medium hundreds of times.

Stedenko, you need to do more research before spouting off. Look how many people think your "info" is actually useful. What a shame to be so popular and so wrong.

Pool filter DE is not only calcined, but is also treated with soda ash. The industrial process for making pool filter DE is not the same, and anyone who has worked with both can tell you they have different properties.

Calcined DE such as napa 8822 is not harmless. Like all dusty things we work with, you need to have ventilation and use a dust mask, especially when sifting. If you have time - rinse, dry, then sift. Prolonged and frequent exposure without protection will get you sick. That said, it's nowhere nearly as harmful as pool grade DE. If you want to be useful go get the MSDS for Napa 8822. I've posted it on this board already and you sort of owe us now.

btw, you can make your own soda ash from salsola soda, which can be used to remove sodium from soil as a side benefit. then you can treat you food grade DE or calcined DE to make it really deadly.

If you are using any of the clay gravels like turface instead of DE, be aware that vegetable oil and calcined clay products don't mix. It will heat up. Not sure what that means for neem oil.

I may have it confused but I believe both react with hydrofluoric acid, and the calcined clay (moltan, etc..) also reacts with veggie oil.

says so right on the label!

whoa, I wonder if you can use oil plus moltan to convert it to something more useful? maybe if the two were put in a sealed container? what would happen to the C in the veggie oil?

:yoinks:

From the MSDS for oil-dri (calcined clay)

the story will sound like:
" so I was just pre-loading some calcined clay with alaska fish emulsion when..."

Good to see someone else experimenting with different propogating mediums. I've tried just about every medium there is and have recently gone back to using standard potting mix for producing clones. To date it has been very successful. Let's clone in dirt.

you should start a thread in here!

I got a bag of the Moltan Ultrasorb and it states the hydrofluoric acid only, other than that it says that it absorbs most other oils. 2 miles from my house and $5.99, I'll give it a shot.

So is calcined clay basically the cheap stuff? When I looked at the cheaper stuff it just said naturally occuring clay product, same as cat litter.
