Bro that soil might be bad if kept waterlogged. Try to keep it moist at most. Don't think u can keep it alive that way. You could plant a cover crop like alfaalfa and give it 20w of power or a sunny wimdow if you want it alive. The bacteria needs sugars exuded by the plants roots in order to survive and multiply.

I'm not going to bother growing anything in my planter until my next plant in September.
I don't want to bother.
I'm just going to let it sit with the bubbler going.

It's not waterlogged. It's just wicking the way it always does and I'm watering it down the tube now.
It's dry on top with Tons of roots that are dying/composting as it sits, providing food.

It's not so much the bacteria that I want to keep alive, it's the springtails.
I believe it was the springtails that kept the nasty winged bugs under control by eating the larvae.

I know that I have/had at least 2 types of springtails in the planter.
One was really tiny and would float on top of the water when I watered my plant. I could see them moving, but they were super tiny. They were white and the shape of long grain rice.
The other was much bigger and ran along at about 30 mph (relatively speaking. lol)
Apparently there are over 9000 species of springstails, and the fast moving ones are the ones that hunt.

Springtails apparently eat dead roots, fungus, and algae, and some springtails eat other springtails as well.

I didn't have a problem with bugs during my last grow but I did have mold, so I looked up what bugs eat mold and they said cockroachs 🪳, silver fish and millipedes.

I hate those bugs, so I won't be introducing them to my planter.

So, I'm just thinking,..
What about introducing a mild dose of sugars to my planter?
I've got table sugar and molasses.

I remember using molasses before and my reservoir stunk like sewage, but I was using a ½ tablespoon per liter when I was supposed to use ¼ teaspoon.

I'm thinking ½ teaspoon of molasses in 2 liters of RO water should do the trick?

I use molasses in my DWC system at the rate of 1tsp per 6L of nutes to feed the Great White beneficial bacteria and fungi, never any smell problem.

It's done,..
I use molasses in my DWC system at the rate of 1tsp per 6L of nutes to feed the Great White beneficial bacteria and fungi, never any smell problem.

I was using 1 tablespoon per 4 liters,
EDIT: I was using a tablespoon with every 2 liters of water.

with no oxygen to the reservoir at the time and it went septic and anaerobic.
(I got all carried away at the time and thought the more the better.
1 tablespoon is good for a 150 pound adult human. Not a 40 pound planter. )

But,..

I just drained off my reservoir, topped it up to 2 liters and stirred in ½ teaspoon of molasses.

Then I uncovered the root stalk and poured in ¼ of it in at the stalk, figuring it can run down the roots to the bacteria and other creatures, then I poured the rest down the tube.

I think that I should be fine, especially with the bubbler going.

It shouldn't go septic/anaerobic.

I've got tons of bigger springtails 🐛 running around beside the root stalk in my closet planter 🪴.

I can see about 3 dozen of them at the same time.
My planter is just crawling with bugs 🐛.

That's a good thing.
I like these bugs.

Love dragonflies. Incredible creatures.

Yeah, they're cool 😎 !!

I just stared at it for about 5 minutes and imitated it's head movements, then it would let me get an inch from it with my camera to take a picture.
They're not stupid.

It's my new friend, but my old friend the squirrel scared it away, and the squirrel was 4 feet from it.

This dragonfly appears to be carmel flavored. They were blueberry flavored last year. Lol

I went with another GLo seed for the window sill.

The cut plant looks like it weighs just under 80 grams right now including the sticks and stems.
She's pretty close to dry now.

My kitchen scale said it was 60 grams, but I had to stand the plant up and support it a bit.

I figure I'll get about 25-35 grams in the end ??

I cut the stalk out of the window planter and got it ready for the next seed.
I took a scoop of soil from my closet planter and put it in my window planter.
I could see the springtails running around in the scoop, so I know for sure that they are in the window planter now.

I've got a bunch more bugs stuck to my light bulbs, but I didn't notice any problems with the plant. I did see quite a few winged bugs around the plant though.
It looks like I've got a few types of flying bugs in the window planter.

I had very few bugs in the closet so I'll see what the next window plant looks like for flying insects.
