passive plant killer

D9, when do you feel it's safe to take cuttings out of the wick cloner?

Following your schedule, I'll be taking the lid off for two hours tomorrow and than forever on Thursday.

I think this method is preferable to all the others....it just seems so damn easy. No wilting, hardly any maintenance, no pumps...

hey, i usually like to transplant them at around 6-8". roots are showing heavily on all sides by then.

it is easy, i haven't lost a clone in years.

haha so that's why you don't put eight of them in one container like I did....

hey, jjfoo!

if i build a new room i will use bare bulbs with a lot of ac and circulation.

why not AC for the room in general and cool tubes with a dedicated fan pulling through them? It seems like it is cheaper to pull air through lights than run the AC more?

I just took my glasses off my lights to clean them and my AC jut kicks on and stays on. I think you can cool the room with less watts using a combo of AC and ducted lights...

hey! you are probably right about the electrical consumption. i'm still at least a year away from making that decision anyway. the ultimate decision will depend on the room i will be using. controlling heat is the main priority. i do like the lights really close to the plant.

it's time to defoliate again so here are some before and afters. i'm doing this every week in veg and they grow back to the extent you see in that time.

i now have 5 plants treated like this in flower so we will be seeing the first one of these cut in about 3-4 wks.

we won't know about yield until then but done in veg on this schedule i am flowering a more compact, manageable, plant. soon i will be able to get some pics of flowering plants again.

even if i do not improve yield getting the same yield with a smaller plant would be a vast improvement.

speaking of yield i have not gotten a plant under 15 oz's in a long time. i have had a bunch of 16+, one 18+, and one 20+.

on to the pics, d9

lol...awesome update! I just finished tearing apart my whole flower room. I now have a variety of plants ranging from 4 inches to 7 feet hanging around my basement!

Time to rearange...with some more vert thrown in for good measure... :D

I would think that this technique would let you stay ahead of a mite infestation. And if you need to spray or fog then it would be easy to penetrate the canopy.

I have started removing leaves, but just enough so there is no overlap as to allow better air movement. But this is a step for me, because before I would not remove leaves at all unless the fell off.

I'm just looking for a way to quantify the results other than lbs/plant (which is not as helpfull as lbs/ft2 or lbs/watt, lbs/month avg, etc).

But, as I understand it, you are growing the same amount of plants and getting bigger yields, so this would indicate that your yield is increasing.

hi, yes, physical removal of pest used in conjunction with a spray is very effective. after i pick the plants i always seal the garbage bag so nothing gets out.

doing a plant a week lets me observe trends in a much shorter time frame than people doing unit grows. without actually quantifying i can readily observe changes taking effect.

for example i have been defoliating in veg on the schedule mentioned above for 13 weeks. this gives me 7 in veg and 6 so far in flower. in 2 weeks approximately i will be harvesting the first in this series.

i will then harvest 14 more just like it. a week apart. depending on results of the first few i will decide to continue the program this way or begin changing something. in a few months i will have a definitive answer about this technique as i have applied it.

yes, right now i'm getting a sustained high yield with the technique i was using before vegetative defoliating, which was at end of stretch for quite a while and then onset of 12/12 and end of stretch. two more of those left and then we will see one of three things happen.

yield will go up overall

yield will go down overall

yield will remain the same

regardless of outcome i have to do something about controlling plant size. when i had 8 monsters in the room at once i literally could not walk upright through the plants without breaking large heavily budded limbs. crawling around on my hands and knees is bullshit. i had to take plants out in pieces. no more carrying a plant out and getting a couple of pics before whacking.

i hope to resume upright bipedalism soon, d9

yea, I have had problems with the plants going into and around (above) the lights. The lights end up direclty hanging from the ceiling and can't go any higher.

I just did some defoliation and noticed that I am giving lots of light to lower growth which from the little I know about botany combined with my prev experience should cause less stretching due to shaded colas reaching for light trying to be dominant.

I wonder how the plant would respond if you stripped all the foliage except for the very lowest. maybe it would have the same effect but give the plant more photosynthesis time.

Anyhow, what I defoliated wasn't close to what you do, but I have kind of done a 180 when it comes to this idea. I used to never remove leaves and now I am. I'm glad I doubted my idea enough to try something different. If I see even one mite I remove the leaf, this alone could save me on mite issues.

hey, i was just talking to you!

the atami is pretreated and shipped moist. but i wash the hell out of with tap water anyway and then pretreat it with the jack's mix at full strength. ec 2.1 by pouring about 4 gals through a 5 gal bucket real slow as soon as it drains completely from the tap water wash. so the tap water washes the medium and the nutrient mix washes out the tap water. or a lot of it anyway.

home depot has recently begun selling a compressed brick that expands to 2.5 cu ft i think. it's 7.95 us. i bought one and soaked it in 20 gallons of water overnight and stirred it around after it broke up. then raked it out onto a screen and rinsed with the hose.

i could not tell the difference between this stuff and the 28 dollar 1.5 cu ft bag of atami. same consistency, fiber particle size mix and so on. it was dirty. it had maybe a quart of black sand in it and some rocks but all that dropped to the bottom of the big tub.

i mixed it with an equal volume of atami stuff and have been using it for about a month. seems ok.

check your thread, later

Hey D9.. are you still pretreating your coco with ec 2.1 Jacks formulation?
or is 'full strength' whatever ec one is useing in the voume rez?
and are you still mixing the atami with the HD coco?

AND.. what a PITA, sorry... is it necessary for all feeder lines to be the same length??
I'm thinking a 6' feeder would interact twice as much as a 12' feeder would>

hi, i haven't had the borg since i started defoliating but i have had a couple of cases of fungus gnats and one outbreak of thrips.

i inspect plants almost daily for pest and try to catch them early.

early detection, defoliation, and a good application of Jack's Dead Bug with spinosad seems to work great. one application of spinosad is usually enough.

raid flying insect killer sprayed lightly on the outside of containers kills fungus gnats throughout the grow.

i just use whatever i'm feeding at the time. ec 1.5 right now.

but remember this is after a heavy rinse with tap water that is allowed to drain thoroughly before the pretreatment.

i'm pouring about 4.5 gals of solution through during the
pretreatment.

i'm not using the hd coco anymore. that was a one time experiment. i think it retains a lot more salt than the atami. some of the containers where i used it mixed with atami showed salt deposits around the air holes. this never happens with atami alone. it did not seem to affect growth, however.

i also don't want to have to mix and rehydrate coco. i like the loose fill. very fast and easy to work with.

i have found that the feed lines from the control bucket to the individual plant reservoirs do not have to be equal length but it would not hurt to have them so.

the pulse feed lines have to be equal length to get equal delivery. an alternative would be to put small aquarium type valves on each one and try to tune them. but i feel that is a cumbersome approach to a problem that can be solved by taking your longest run and duplicating it.

today marks a personal milestone of sorts for me. today i had to retire a canoe paddle that i have been stirring nutrients with for years.

it rotted. i have worn out a friggin' boat paddle! in the same time frame i could have paddled the amazon, and propelled myself up the river too! no doubt the amazon would have kicked my ass.

but all i got to do was stir water in a little circle. i still took a trip, though.

it has been replaced by an aluminum and plastic collapsible piece of techno marvel that will last forever.

it's still not friendly to the touch like the old one.
