The MkIIIA will run longer and shorter columns, simply by changing the length of the down tube. We run 6" columns on ours for kif.

We get our filter driers at RSD Refrigeration supply. Sorry the unit is at the lab, so I can't look for a part number, but they come in different lengths and connections.

We use their shortest one to protect the inlet of the pump from liquid, and select one with a female 1/4 Flare inlet and a 1/4" male Flare outlet.

If we need to dry out some butane, we put a larger one on the pump outlet.

big terp 1 step away need fittings info

big terp 1 step away need fittings info

hey guys i have produced a stainless steel sanitary weld 4" column still with clamp off fittings for butane extraction. when i designed it i didn't know of the tamisium or the lil terp but i am so happy that they exist and even more so that gray wolf has such a presence on this site. i am now 1 step away. i need to know what fittings to use to make the [proper inlet for the initial introduction of the butane i saw the tam has some kind of teflon fitting i don't know what the terp uses but it seems like some kind of one way valve i have an excellent supplier of hose and fittings next door and i really want to get this baby running. my friends are all pretty stunned by my engineering so far but i no nothing of these fittings thank you all one love and much respect to those who have come before me across this new bridge in science.

Oh as soon as the appion gets here, i guess monday, ill have some pics up.

GW- Should i get the filter with 1/4" or 3/8" ?? Isnt the appion g5 and my hose 3/8"?? I can get a 3/8" filter cheap and local from grainger I was just woudnering if im correct or confused.

Thanks!

A6, I just went through all of this too... The Appion is 1/4", use a 3/8" hose but adapter it to 1/4" for the filter (The filter screws on to the Appion). I'm assuming your spool lid has a 3/8 coupling and valve?

Quoting GW from my thread "Using a 3/8" on the vacuum side speeds up the recovery. The air is thinner on the vacuum side and harder to pump, because the molecules are farther apart and don't have as much attraction to one another."

Either will work with an adaptor. I use the 1/4" because there is little backpressure. There would be less with 3/8".

Ahhh I see, Thanks GW & Lebniis!! Appion will be here monday and i should be up and running by wednesday with pics. I haven't got any n-butane yet as my tank was shipped to the wrong address and is on its way to me and hopefully should be here monday. I only need 5lbs of butane correct? My buddy already has an airgas account i'm hoping there isn't a wait or anything on the butane, we'll see when monday comes. I'm ready to start running this thing!!

5 to 10 lbs is where we run our 50# refrigerant recovery tank that we use on the Terpenators. We only run about 2 pounds in the Lil Terp recovery tank.

Hee, hee, hee, bon appetite!

i'll be over at the hose and fittings store tomorrow liquid/ gas roto units are spendy but for now i will have frankenstien my old nitrous(racing) kit and a couple more parts from the store but this baby should be working in the next couple days i built it for about 100 in all but i work in a metal shop and have been saving material for like 5 months

Good show! Look forward to seeing some pictures of your creation when it is complete bro!

I think GW and I know foaf have no intentions of patenting our hobby toys. I just now (late to the discussion) hear that the tamisumi people have tried to stop people from making similar systems while they await their patent process.

I haven't seen their patent(s) applications and really don't care as Ill never be in that business, but if it is helpful to others who might be told to stop making any such units I wanted to point you to the first posts that I know about regarding such systems.

Overgrow went down in 2005 and I had posted my paint pot/ HVAC recovery pump stuff there then , and also had posted a thread that used passive temperature differential to reclaim the butane. I blew it into a cold vessel and reclaimed and steeped cryogenically, poured and reclaimed with temperature differential.

Point is, I don't have a horse in the whole race except that I wouldn't want someone stifling any products that might be based on things I posted because I intended all to be public domain. The original posts are still up at thenook.org where search engines aren't allowed and only members can see those forums, but anyone can be a member.

So don't take any shit from them if my posts can help. Here is a 2005 picture from Overgrow and reposted early 2006 thenook.org of a passive temperature differential BHO reclamation system, fwiw. Maybe that doesn't address whatever is in their patents but it does show passive temperature differential reclamation in the context of BHO.

Thanks GW for all your work and for your commitment to free information.

Hee, hee, hee, I have read the patent application, which was rejected the first time and applied for a second after David took it to a patent attorney, whom added pages of legalese, which appears to say that whether it is covered in the verbiage or not, it is still under the umbrella of the patent application.

I think it is too broad and is trying to patent items that were prior public domain art, but I'm not qualified to make that judgement, nor am I inclined to pay our intellectual property attorney to research it.

My best guess is the only successful one will be the patent attorney, whom gets to continue to push it, whether it gets approved or not.

We had some dialog after the saber rattling by his attorney, where I tried to forge a joint pact for a less expensive passive extractor for ma and pa, but he wouldn't talk even concepts with me without me signing a NDA.

He and his attorney appeared to me to be trying to box me in, rather than form a joint venture, so I simply walked away, and no one followed.

It is way easier to apply for a patent, than get one, and once you have it, it only entitles you to spend more money defending it, so unless you are a patent attorney getting paid to defend it, holding a patent can be highly over rated.

THANK YOU GRAYWOLF!

the big question i have is can i load the reclaim tank with butane out of refill bottles by simply freezing the butane and tank first and then just blast it in through one of the valves with the other valve open to vent? How else can you load solvent into the tank without a specialized gas cylinder?

i finished up the welding of the lid fittings, picked up a few flare/npt adapters and currently doing some leakdown tests. Seems like the purge vessel holds it's breath as long as you leave the valve closed.... i'm excited to see how it works!

all told, the complete system can be constructed for around $750 which includes the cost of the pump gauge manifold and lines and fittings-- ASSUMING you do your own drilling tapping and TIG welding yourself

I recommend picking up a cheap vacuum pump and a can tapper.

thanks again! This is all much easier than it looks... being familiar with brewery hardware is a plus.

found this part at BrewersHardware.com

they have some good TC adapters in there that are useful for this application. They ship priority and it is FAST to the west coast

The patent has been granted after over 8 years.

It has come to my attention that you have pursued larger systems and it appears that you have received and are receiving compensation.

We will be in contract with you soon.

On a personal note, I appreciate the things you have done in regards to the occasional commments about tamisium but nothing was gained in that when compared to the damages we sustained. It was a great idea but it was not yours to begin with.

GW, i've read all of his and your posts, on the Tamisium forum, and all of your posts, that i could find, on extractors .. Not faulting your extractors at all, just not a fan of electric recovery pumps....
I guess there's something to be said for his perseverance after all..... I've followed the relationship between the two of you in the extractor threads...
Being a thorn in his side for so long must have spurred him on to continue his pursuit of the patent..
Seeing is believing, and ignorance is bliss until it bites you in the ass! You just couldn't see what could be patented, that would preclude your version of the idea ... All's fair in love, war, and patents..
