I have thousands of 1973 or 74 Santa Marta Columbian Golds that I still can't germinate. The seeds turn to mush after it pops. One day I'll figure out how to get these to germ. The Gold from this batch was extremely potent and sent people to hospitals. I need to get one of these to pop!

High UC.
With old seeds, the embryonic membrane around the sprout can dry out and becomes too tough for the seed to break through on it's own.
This leaves it unable to open it's first leaves and for the root to venture out to find water and oxygen.

Some veteran growers have found great success with pre-cracking the shell and delicately removing all or part of the membrane before germing.

If you have enough of these seeds, it is worth a try to experiment. Maybe practice your technique on some other less valuable seeds first?
