damn man i also think i lived really close to you from reading this. i lived near the other big outcropping adjacent to the island. along the river i had one garden in trinity and two in humboldt in the same years on the same land. swam in that river all damn day this time of year. ill tell you man those winds coming through that valley will blow your roof off some days up at the top of those ridges.
beat the shit out of my plants sometimes. like every damn day in the spring and early summer.
seriously fucked up wind on my inside ridge garden. that was almost ten years ago.

It all looks fantastic, a great site and setup - lots of hard work you've put in there, I'll be following along for sure. You're gonna harvest some serious weight there!

I do have a couple of questions/observations. First one is probably a bit stupid, but I've always wondered why all you cali outdoor guys plant in those huge geopots instead of digging a big hole and filling it with your super soil or whatever you're using. Wouldn't that solve problems with plants getting rootbound? Also wouldn't it mean less evaporation and therefore less watering? Those black pots must heat up some too.

Which brings me to my second question - why no mulch? If water is really such a problem out there, wouldn't a nice thick layer of straw preserve moisture in the soil better? Not to mention the benefits to the soil structure/microbial life...

Just my thoughts, not criticisms...
peace TEC.

hey man thanks for the input//comments.
the reason why i use smart pots is because the native soil where i am is a little bit to high in iron, the ph is off and makes hard for me to help the plant achieve is full potential. but i was thinking for digging holes under my pots, filling them with Vermifire soil then put my pots on top.. also i will be using some type of mulch here soon, but when the babies are small and new to there pots i like to let them dry out and stretch their roots out for water. soon i will have straw or a cover crop that should come up in about 2 weeks.

great thoughts man you are right on it!:tiphat::tiphat::tiphat:

very nice set up. How tall approx were they when u transplanted to the big pots? How do you get them so bushy? It's hard to tell from pics but most seem like they haven't been topped?
best of luck this yr

hey man thanks for the comments... they were about 18-20 inches when they were transplanted. i bent them or "supercropped" the top branch of most of them when they were about 16 inches. some are topped but i feel as if the untopped ones look more bushy! thanks for the luck i need it this go around... :dance013:
