Outdoor 2006: Rox, Haleys Comet or Early Pearl - Tell me your experiences !

Hi WAMEN,
There´s nothing wrong when you agree with a suggestion that somebody else already made, I simply don´t like (long) quotes of posts which are on the same page (scrolling a little up the page and you get it - so why quote ?) - that´s all !
I really don´t KNOW if Rox (or HC or EP) is what I´m looking for, I´m just trying to find out !
You´re probably right that Rox isn´t the highest yielder, it has the lowest yielding values on the Paradise Seed List. Of course yield is important, but I´m not growing for any commercial issue, just for my own supply, therefore yield is not the top of my list.

Right, there is a dilemma in my head, and like you wrote, you know it, like all growers know it ! There are so many varieties out there, according to the breeders´descriptions they all should be great, but one has only the possibility (space etc.) to grow 1 or 2 or 3, so one has to select. And nobody wants to waste time, money and effort with plants that are low quality or that will not grow well under given conditions. This makes the dilemma ! About loosing time: I set myself a deadline, I will order my seeds until 1st of May, otherwise I will get to late and grow mini-plants !
About subjectivity: How much anyone likes/dislikes a special kind of high, smell or taste is surely subjective in a high grade, but I think it´s something different with resistance to mold, insects or the time of maturity. Of course these things are also influenced by the care the growers gives to the plants, by the individual circumstances, but I think that they are at first depending on the genetics of the strain !
Therefore reviews which contain informations about these (rather) objective traits can very well be helping ("Did the plants fulfill what the breeder had promised ?") !

about the last question you made, I have some kind of experience of growing Paradise in the past...and I noticed some differences from what the breeder says... and for example, when I grew belladonna (
) It was totally different from the pix you see on internet or on Soft secrets... plus I didnt like the looking of the plant.. oh yeah, neighter the high was good in my opinion, too light.. too heady... I was asking to myself if I was high or not...
the resin amount was incredible),.. but seems like .."it doesn't work"...
(damn I dont have a pic of the plant finished cause I wasn't so happy about it)..

what I mean is...dunno if the rox comes out good as they say... is prolly good..but not 4 shure...

peace

WAMEN: What you´re writing about Belladonna and what I found about Rox in other forums (not much, but wide range from "Top Strain" to "catastrophy", tendency to the positive side) brings up the idea that Paradise Seeds is on one side able to create real high quality, but on the other side, that (some of) their strains are not reliably stable !

BLOTTO: What´s happened to your Mendo Madness ? I hope this post doesn´t mean that all have died ? Would be a real hard loss, it´s a truely interesting strain !

Thanks to all, who made contributions to this thread !

Blotto: Good to read that only the M.M. was sold out and nothing worse. I hope you´ll find the right strains. Nigerian Nightmare sounds like a hard hammer (N.N. is the nickname of nigerian heavy weight boxer Samuel Peters).

cannanaut: Yeah, I´m alive !!! (I needed a few moments to check that´s probably me, who´s m8, first thought m8=meight). I suppose your german, too, I think nobody else would write "macht" as m8 !

Wacky Tobacky: I´ve read the thread about ducksfoot, seems to be a real good strain, maybe that I´ll try it next year.

I made my decision, I´ll try the EARLY PEARL ! I´ve just written my order, tomorrow I´ll send it away. Why this one ?

First I was most interested in the Rox. But the echo here was that it probably would be not very suitable to be grown outdoor at my latitude. Especially important, I wrote a PM to kov, the only one here who´s grown it (indoor) and he clearly expressed that he doesn´t think that it´s an outdoor strain and because he has some years of outdoor experience this gives his opinion some weight. Furthermore my continued research on Rox wasn´t really convincing. First I didn´t find much, and what I found was divided. Some reviews very positive (strong, fruity, pleasant, no mold etc), others wrote about mold and wouldn´t have grown it anymore. And at least I have seen reports on some other Paradise Seed strains that should be outdoor suitable, according to the breeder, but they had severe mold problems. So, under these circumstances, I decided to use it not. I´m still interested to try it, but if I really do it, I´ll do it in another year, when it will be accompagnied by a save-success-strain, and this year I already will grow Krystalica, a variety that is already a little risky for my latitude. So I don´t want to try out a second unsure strain, I need a classic outdoor plant.

About Haleys Comet: I think that it´s a strain with high quality, good citrus taste and a pleasant High, but according to all independent information I could find, it is mature FAR later than the breeder´s mid september, I found no grower reporting harvest before mid october, and this fact gets even more important because it seems to have only a medium mold-resistance.

So I choose Sensi´s Early Pearl. Sensi underlines very much it´s mold resistance also in bad seasons and what I found on the web by independant growers fits to Sensi´s claims. Nobody had mold, also growers in the U.K., who surely have a rainier weather than I have ! It shall be mature (Sensi ´s description) end september, I think one should add two weeks (because it seems that ALL outdoor harvest times by breeders are to optimistic. But then I´m mid october and with good mold-resistance that´s sufficient.
Furthermore it´s said that it has a pleasant more sativa-type high and the growers confirm that it has an outstandingly good extremely sweet smell and taste. If the informations that I found are at least mostly true, than it´s the right plant for me !
It has a further additional advantage: As far as I know this is not any F1-Hybrid, but a long-inbred stable strain (initial cross made in the seventies from early girl and californian sativa Pollyanna). This gives the option to try some hybridization experiments with a fairly homogenous outcome (if the partner plant is also a stable inbred strain). I hope that it is not autoflowering, at least not all plants, which will be necessary to keep the parental plants in veg. - E.P. is my choice !

Now it´s fixed, my outdoor grow 2006 will be Mandala Seeds Krystalica L.O.E. 2005 and Sensi Seeds Early Pearl. I hope the EP seeds will be delivered fast, because I´m already a little late.

I´will probably start a new thread as soon as I will have first results - seedlings !
