Tutorial Organics for Beginners

Just hit page #200...worst thing about digging through a looong thread like this one, is, you can’t comment on what’s going on: traveling through time, coming up from the past. But I *CAN* stick head out and say DAMN what a thread!!!

I am totally loving this, learning a ton...be ready for an associates degree by the time I’m done. Thanks to all the posters asking questions and helping to provide answers! Thanks to Lavender Cowboy and Bongoloid for the recipes, and to BurnOne for picking up the torch and carrying on with it!

Onward!

UPDATE: ...and by ~pg. 350 or so, the thread goes off the rails...by this point, Burn1, vonforne, and Clackamas Coot have gone on, and the thread is just ‘experimenters’ wandering in the Bush, encouraging others to do as they like...it’ll be interesting to see if it gets a grip on itself at some point, by this point, it’s not “Organics for Beginners” anymore.

For those who jump to the end: go back read the first 200 pages again, or even the first 100 pages - the meat is all on the front end. Eat hearty!

Thank you for this information. I had noticed something in skipping around, but couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. You are right, the whole slant went from student questioners/learmned teachers to something different, and less useful.

Kind regards

Howdy I wood, been a few years. Good to see
yer still kickin' :)

I recently began organic soil again and use gypsum and oyster shell instead of lime. My
plan is to recycle my soil. It's my understanding
that the lime will build up when recycling.

Wow, good to see you made it here. Sorry i missed this.
Lots of good info and people to interact with.
Recycling is the way to go and skipping the dolomite is key.
Ive been using the same dirt for about 7years by just topdressing at transplant with a little gypsum and whatever else I think is needed.
Kelp & crab shell meal are both good. Dry powdered rainbow mix, grow or bloom are easier and cover more needs. Grow at transplant and bloom at switch to flowering.
After five or ten runs dump into pile and add some powdered rock dust, fish bone meal, fish meal, gypsum mix and repeat.
One good trick, especially for long flowering sativas, is to leave room at the top of pot to add soil halfway into flowering.
Anything I can do to help you, just ask. Surplus seeds could always use a new home.

This thread is super helpful. Thank you to burn one and everyone else!

I’d really like to use LC’s soiless mix #1 and the nutrient recipe #3 for my first grow.

My only question right now is if it’s okay to use non local ingredients bought online? I live in the NE US and my options for locally sourcing some ingredients seems limited.

Thanks again!

Puhh just spend some time in this thread so much info! Thank you!
Just so hard to find all the stuff overhere in Europe for really getting a living soil going. But we will see what we can find. Definitely want to try one of the mixes on here!

if it's your first go, can't recommend the fish and seaweed recipe for veg enough. cheap, brainless, and cheat-level effective. the water-only blood-bone-kelp mix for flower kicks ass. justiceman runs that recipe, a peek at his plants should give you a clear idea of what to expect for results.

Thanks, noknees! Appreciate it. Yeah first go and trying to keep it simple. Still have a lot to learn. Those both seem easy and I think I can find good local sources for most. I’ll check out justiceman’s pics.

I recently began organic soil again and use gypsum and oyster shell instead of lime. My

that the lime will build up when recycling
.

I believe the reason for this is the amount of magnesium carbonate dolomite lime has. It's not used in as high of quantities as calcium so it sticks around longer. Makes sense that adding Gypsum(caclium sulfate) with Oysershell(calcium carbonate) works. Less potential for carbonate build up.

What I think would be an interesting way to go would be to use dolomite every 3rd or 4th recycle to up the magnesium levels occasionally.

This is what I was going to run with. Any suggestions?

The base mix looks pretty good for the most part, but I would do either 2 parts compost or 2 parts EWC not both. If you do 4 parts total worth of compost it's going to offset your aeration and will likely be too dense unless you specifically want more water retention.

You picked some nice amendments but I think some adjustment is needed. For starters you should cut all of your mineral additions in half.

Your fertilizer amendments are:

1 cup Kelp
1 cup Bone meal
1/2 cup Alfalfa meal
1/2 cup Neem meal
1/2 cup Crab/shrimp or lobster meal

But then under minerals you have these listed. Honestly I don't have any knowledge or experience on using potash in a soil mix so I cannot say much about it, but the fish meal, crab or lobster, and kelp meal are fertilizer amendments not minerals.

1 cup potash
1 cup fish meal
1 cup crab or lobster meal
1 cup kelp meal(This is already listed in your base mix as well)

Many strong soils have a maximum of 2-3 cups total of fertilizer amendments per cubic foot of soil. I usually stay at 2 max. Your mix is at 7.5 cups of fertilizer per cubic foot of soil. Way too strong. You'll need to either reduce the amount of your amendments or reduce the variety of your amendments. Notice how simple yet effective the blood, bone, and kelp recipe is at the start of this thread. More is not always better.

If you have no way to source locally then you can definitely use ingredients bought online no problem.

Thank you, justiceman! I don’t know my ass from my elbow but those plants look super healthy and happy.

I actually had a quick question on the blood-bone-kelp meal nutrient recipe for flower and veg. Would it be okay to add Crab Meal for the chitin as a plant defense? Or would that through the NPK ratios out of whack?

I would be so appreciative if you had any thoughts. Thanks again!!!

 Thank you!

You can definitely add crab meal if you like but keep in mind the amount of fertilizer per gallon or per cubic ft. I would caution against exceeding 4Tbsp per gallon or 2 cups per cubic ft of fertilizer so if you want to add Crab Meal then I would omit a portion of Blood and Bone meal.

Blood and Bone are your N, P and Ca sources, Crab Meal is an N, P and Ca source so it should work well if that is the route you'd like to take.

I would try something like this to start things off and make adjustments from there if needed:

0.5 Tbsp Blood Meal per gallon or 1/4 cup per cubic ft
1 Tbsp Crab Meal per gallon or 1/2 cup per cubic ft
1.5 Tbsp Bone Meal per gallon or 1 3/4 cup per cubic ft
1 Tbsp Kelp Meal per gallon or 1/2 cup per cubic ft
