indeed some do have red stems naturally, all the time, as part of their genetics. Some stay green all the time also
Others will exhibit reddening of the leaf veins and petioles when they start to run short of nutrients, usually as a result of being root bound. its often one of the first signs. The veins and petioles go green again soon after a repot.
some will scoff i'm sure but thats what ive learned about some of my cuts by running them over and over again. I can prove this photographically if you like next time i run certain of my genetics.

ETA, yep, nutrient deficiency can result in the unnatural production of anthocyanins in some plants.

i been experimenting w/ that VG and i need to take a look cause i did pot up a root-bound plant w/ some red stems a couple weeks ago and havent thought to notice since
i also burned a top-dress'd plant w/ a transpo into fresh mix so that experiment is out the door ~well; unless it has no red?
i dont mean to discount your report by any means ~i do think these tend to run red-stemmed though

My plants have red stems as well. Better Hit em' with Kool Bloom, Cha-ching, Beastie Bloom.
The snappy names Red Rhino and Crimson Chronic have not been taken by breeders yet.
Seriously now..... Thumbs up for mentioning the red stems associated with confined root zone. Yes its true and I have a perfect example. 5 gal. pots=red stems. Transplanted into unconfined soil changed to green in less than 2 weeks. Same soil, Same strain. The difference is quite dramatic, and I can post good example pics of this phenomenon if anyone is interested? My personal opinion is doesnt matter as both examples are very vibrant and healthy. But still your information is solid, thanks for the observation.

Had a controlled experiment going w/o knowing it.
Same soil mix, same exact age, same strain, same clone batch from the same mother. Some in 5 gal planters, others in the ground with no root restriction. Just clean water from birth.
Here is the ever so popular OGK these are Deadhead OG. Wouldnt be growing an OG strain at all but an old farmer stopped by with clones and suggested I give it a try. Well when someone with his level of experience suggests something ya listen up. Yes old timer, a bit sedating but powerful indeed!
Heres shots in 5 gallons soil.
And transplanted with roots allowed to free range'
Root space (up to a point) is obviously a factor to enhanced growth as the ones that were transplanted are a bit larger and healthier overall (nothing new learned there). But thanks for bringing the red stems restricted root space to my attention.

I hit my plants with coconut water for the first time last night, as well as comfrey tea. The comfrey was pureed in a blender and allowed to sit in water for 3 hours, dilluted x2 and sprayed and thoroughly drenched them. Coconut water at 1/2c per gallon. 24 hours later I have nearly solid red stems on one strain all the rest seem to be turning as well, but not nearly as quickly. Last night they all had green stems and petioles. How can this be explained? They are not root bound, and have got plenty of room to grow into these pots. They look happy as can be, leaves standing out and looking nice. Ive never had red stems, petioles sure, purple stems from P def yea, but maroon stems never before..Like flipping a switch they changed colors.
