i was thinkin bout doin the same thing. its cheaper to buy enough raw material to make ten of them for the price they sell em for. do the stacks actually sit on the rez (what he's building, folks...) or are they supported otherwise? id be sure that your homemade rez's can hold the weight yer gonna be stackin on em...prolly be fine it seems well tought out :) good to see ya brothaman, hope all is ok in your universe and hit me up sometimes for sure :) been too long!!!

be well :)

they will stack right on top of each other....

fiberglass is 10 X stronger then the abs they used............

its not really the price thats making me want to build them..... but in fact theres a few reasons. the main being that what ever they uesd is
1 not strong ( there starting to bend out of shape)
2 not light proof ( i keep getting rot & algee)
3 drains too small
4 not enuff root space
5 not a POD RACER :) i wants a tru high psi fog misting "tag"

as far as the "REZ" im still using a 5 gallon bucket for 180 site that might change now that all have more then that.... :)

Morning 00420,

Just wanted to say a few thing and ask a couple of questions.

1. Your fiberglass skills are on the money. If others will notice. You lines are nice and straight. Meaning, it didn't look like you was fighting to work against jell time. Very nice work there. Everything looks nice and tight like it should.

Great job.

1. I was wondering if your using any mold release? IE, Bee's wax, etc or are they releasing from the ABS pretty good on their own?

2. What size batch are you mixing your resin at? Are you doing 1 gallon batches? Just asking because I was curious at your jell time, IE. How many CC of harder per Quart or Gallons?

3. EDIT: Just saw the 5 gallon bucket of Gel Coat. What color is the Gel Coat?

4. What fiberglass type are you using and how many OZ's? Looks like weave to me, but could be on of those Hybreds also.

Great job and love the thread. I'll stop asking all the questions. Thanks for sharing and I'm very happy to see you around again and also posting. I hope all is well and you take care. Hit me up when you get a chance.

I will add something to the thread. For anyone working with fiberglass and don't know about this product. If you have access to a work shop and hate working fast because of gel time. Us surfboard shapers use what's call Sun Cure. It's a new type of harder. It won't gel time till the sun light hits it or the use of tanning bed light bulbs. Great stuff and gels in minutes and total cured in about 5 minutes. Old type harder, MEKP. Takes a while to totally cure. This stuff is great stuff. Might want to give a look.
Take care and great thread.
Later,
BG

yes theres a coat of wax for release.... to cover all the hole we use clear tape then taped posterboard over that i did not want the tape or paper poping lose when we take it a part so had to wax...

im mixing 1/2 gallon at a time.... but going to start 1 gallon batch's.....
if i remember right its 15cc's all double check tonite...

the gel coat is ................. hehhehe... u will see

it is weave

Cool 00420,

Thanks for the info. I to built a boat from scratch. I'd post pictures, but there's nothing like it and it would not be good for me. I shot the gel coat on with a gun and hand layed the whole haul. Also wet sanded the whole haul. Not one swirl make and shines like a mirror.

That about right for cc's. I do 15 cc also and the Gel time is around 15 mintues +-, depending on the temp. Looking forward to more pictures and post. Thanks again for sharing your project with us. I might have to give this a whirl. Since I also like the Coli units. I hope in the end. You give us a ball park amount. On what you spent on the project in whole. If I remember correctly. I spent $1500 for my 120 site unit.
Thanks again,
BG

would it be possible to build these from scratch? Could you use some foam and build a mold based around that?

How hard would it for someone with no real fiberglass experience to build one of these? I patched a few holes in some jet skis, thats about it.

Also what is the weight of a fiberglass one versus a plastic one? I think the glass one is going to weigh a ton

No doubt, after seeing that mother room. You got me shock and awed 00420. Can't wait to see more updates on the glassing job. Looking forward to seeing how the whole unit comes out. Also, wondering the cost verses buying a unit.

Like you said before. The fiberglass is going to be stronger and there is not doubt. One thing I was thinking the other day. Do you think the gel coat will seal the resin enough and do you think the plant nutz will react with the gel coat or leach in any way? I was curious about that, verse ABS.

Thanks again for sharing your grow with us and your DIY Coli unit.
Take care,
BG

suh-weet!

I love reading stadium lighting threads! It's something I've been interested in but haven't been able to find a ton about :)

Nice work with the fiberglass by the way -- I hate the stuff. No matter how well protected I keep myself I seem to get some in the most annoying places.

I had factory seconds, I picked a coliseum up for only $800. They were also slightly transparent but I never had algae problems, I also had the large module version, boy they were cumbersome... but for aeroponics, superior to the two row design (roots rot in standing water at the bottom of the module).

Personally I didn't find the coliseum shape that great, its good for perlite, but for aeroponics it blows.

Heres mine belching fog.. rawr!

Oh yes, this is what I have been waiting for.....
ever since I saw soquicks coli grow i wanted my own, but they were to expensive and unweildy to ship and alas our savior 00420 arrives...
