first off i'd like to say happy near year to everyone and hope 2011 is bright for everyone

Hi Dr.D :thank you: Great thread and thanks for inspiring so many growers including myself to try this simple dwc method....

I just maybe 1 or 2 questions if I may.....
first you mention that when you top off your rez you adjust your ppm's with nutrient solution to the correct levels corresponding to week of veg/flowering...? right? ok here's my question when adding your nutrients do you add them separately to the rez or do you make a few liters of a full strength feed in a different bucket THEN add that to the rez? because i use full line AN and the second option seems easer to me to raise the ppm's ....

the second question is im looking for a air stone what size should i use for a 20L bucket....and im pretty sure its noisy so im guessing hanging would be the best option......what size mesh pot would be best for a 20l bucket... i thought a 8 inch pot but does it matter......

thanks in advance....:tiphat:

Give it another try

Give it another try

Reading this thread made me want to give water another try. We have cats and those plastic containers are perfect for water. We used to have a big fish tank and I put the air compressors on the airstone and bingo! Rafe

vince514, there's a few posts in the Hydro section regarding net pot sizes. Careful, some are not very friendly. 6", 8", 10" seem to be the most common. Some use none. 8" would be fine, some opt for the 10". At this point, it's going to become personal preference.

As far as airstones, I use the slim 6" air stone purchased from my local hydro store for $2. It pushes air fine. You want to be careful not to get too large of a stone, otherwise your air pump may not be able to push through it. I'm also new to hydro, but this is from my experience and research. I hope a hydro expert will chime in soon. Cheers, friend & good luck.

i was thinking of a 8 inch pot it would take up most of the space on the lid of the 5 gallon bucket im planning on using..

im looking into the tetra quiet pump..its the 10-20gallon ..but i think it will be overkill for such a small bucket....im gonna do some more research......

as per feeding to "top off" the rez . im guessing making a seprate feed than adding THAT to the bucket would be optimal??????

someone let me know please:thank you:

Bigger net pots are going to evaporate quicker than smaller ones. How often are you going to be in your room? I prefer the 6 inch ones that fit on standard 5g buckets. 8 in is too bug and 4 inch is too small. :joint:

im gonna be in the room probably more than i am now considering that this would be my first attempt at hydro of any kind..normally im in the room everyday but it would be more often with the dwc going.....you think it will dry out as often if i pla to use the small hydroton expanded clay pellets?......i appriciate your opinions everyone kinda new to this hydro thing and i just want to cover most of the angles before i decide to dive in...lol

Go to home depot, lowes, get a hot water tank blanket, its insulation to keep your hot water tank warm, saving energy. Get the reflective type, not the fiberglass one, it comes with foil tape. About $20, there is enough material to do 4-5 buckets. It works great!

Hello, I'm a first time grower and have purchased a DWC kit. I tried using rockwool to start seeds but it didn't take. So, I planted in soil. They are growing very well. My question is: Once I'm ready to transplant into the DWC bucket, how to I handle the soil. Do I shake it off the roots, wash it out or what. I'm not at that point yet bur could use some good information. Thanks Kingjet

Hey Dr. D your system and thread has inspired me to run the same, I have two 5 gal buckest and to air pumps under a 250w hps at two weeks into flower now. My question to you is (and it may be stated here somewhere) what size light are you running under cause thats a beautiful flower you have there at the beginning, also what nutes are you running, Ive elected to go with GH on one and Cutting Edge on the other just to see witch one will produce better.

bluecheese from clone 1.5 weeks

bluecheese from clone 1.5 weeks

this is bluecheese from clone in an ikon oxypot, fed with ionic hydro grow at 0.8 ec 1 and a half-2 weeks old.
found that canazym works well for keeping the roots healthy.
dwc plants grow so vigorously and quick got to keep an eye on those roots and change the nutrients and water out once a week at least.spearzy.

How the nutes works? You put 600ppm in there...when is drop to 300ppm you had a fresh 300ppm ans after 3-4 weeks you change everything?

Do you adjust pH often?

going to start to build some buckets for my next run. will be covering buckets in hot water heater blanket material to keep any heat issue's down. question what kind of air pump and what size would work great for 5-5 gallon buckets? some sort of aquarium pumps would be easier to get due to the high amout of fish store's in my area.
