Sheeeeit, screw the lights on for the bathroom trips, my slippers would be thigh high waders :D

And damn, to think you hit it just perfectly straight down where it couldn't get around on you...

Of course, it probably didn't hurt that you went straight up 8ft in the air like a scalded cat :biglaugh:

That is a rattlesnake it's in the sub family of pit vipers, and one of the most common snakes in the southwestern united states. They are fervent breeders and their population is very good. No harm in killing one of these in the least bit.

Have you ever had an encounter like this? I did, when I was a kid once It's scary. I am against needless killing but we decided to kill the rattle snake too. I don't regret it....... but my dad made me grill it over a fire and eat it with him. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't want to eat it all the time.

I am glad you understand my point at least, instead you could have been nasty about it. I realize inside a house, there may be no choice but to kill the intruder, in this case a snake. I am just saying if it is possible, try to use non-lethal means, encouraging it to go back out through the door for instance. I don't think snakes, even poisonous ones, should be killed JUST because they are snakes or are poisonous or are in your house. If the population can sustain it, as it seems it can, regulated hunting is ok as long as you eat what you kill. Sport hunting of anything without eating it is an immoral barbaric waste in my opinion. I don't live where there are poisonous snakes, but I visited California once and saw a rattler in the wild twice there. It was cool!

What if Babba had been bit trying to get the snake out of the house?..or it came back and bit one of us or our cat if he just let it go? We have NO health care insurance and to have to pay an emergency room would have been a huge bill. Not what I want to go thru, never mind the pain that goes along with being bit!
What we did was the best way to handle that DANGEROUS situation.

Yes It was. I hav a client who was bit in the hand while rock climbin. You do NOT want to go through that. Live and let live is a great point of view, only If both parties agree to that rule.

Geez, this thread is still going?

I've handled a lot of snakes. It being a small rattler, had it been my house I probably would have scooted it into a small trash can using a stick. But I'm used to dealing with snakes. I think the Babbas made the right decision to decapitate it with a shovel. Shame they got blood on that nice rug though. But then, now it's a conversation piece.

you guys don't have health insurance???? wtf???? Is it like a personal, fuck the system choice, or is it just too much money? You could always lie about certain things and get healthcare through the state. Just sayin. When's the last time one of you went to a doctor? You guys don't get check ups and blood tests and stuff?

umm it's rather easy...

think pulling off a sock..

I tried skinning a rattler using this technique once, but ran into difficulties. Was trying to get the entire skin inverted, with hopes of stuffing the darned thing. Started by cutting and peeling the skin back around the mouth. Darned rattlesnakes have such a narrow neck in proportion to the body, that the skin simply couldn't peel back any further. If you didn't try to keep the head and neck though, I bet you could get a nice skin for a belt using this technique.

Fuck that! I don't understand your point of view... A deadly intruder enters my home and I kill it. Period.

Snakes bite. Poisonous snakes kill and they don't always rattle and make a dramatic scene about it before they bite you either. They slither around and under shit to sneak up on ya and strike from ambush. I figure that if a snake is close enough for me to kill it then the fucker is close enough to kill me and I ain't fixin' to wait and ask his intentions.

Oh yeah: Don't feed or pet the bears either.

You don't need to explain or excuse your actions, the end result was perfect. If you had chased it out of your house, the damn thing would have most likely bitten a neighbors kid.
Besides: Who in their right mind leaves deadly poison just laying or crawling around?

OK since everyone is jumping down my throat without acknowledging that I have any kind of a point, I feel the need to dispute this:

I don't know if it was possible in your situation, I was not there. All I am saying is that IF IT IS POSSIBLE, you should try non-lethal means first. All I am saying is that just because it is an animal you don't like or is poisonous, does not give people the automatic right to kill it. Steve Irwin picked up poisonous snakes all the time, granted he was crazy and trained, and no one who is not trained should try that. But I have trapped and released raccoons and skunks among other things. Do they try to bite or spray you on release? Hell no! They only think about getting away and don't pay attention to you. I bet the snake would have gladly just gone out the door if guided with something with a long handle like the shovel you used to kill it. It isn't going to magically grow wings and come at your throat, if you have your arms extended behind a rake or shovel, that is plenty of distance to rule out a strike. You admitted it was your fault for leaving the door open so why should it have to die for your negligence?

I don't understand your point of view either. You have the right to kill anything that could kill you? Well better slaughter millions of people because they could kill you someday! Snakes and all other creatures, poisonous or otherwise, are critical parts of the natural system and not liking something does not give you the automatic right to kill it. Your post was basically pure idiocy.

Glad no one was hurt. If that would have been me all you would have seen is a white flash with a brown streak down the middle. WOW

One way of killing a snake is to grab it by the tail and swing it around your head a few times and then crack it like a whip; the head flies off.
