its just a pain in the arse bringing it home!!

LOL.

ojd, what you say is true, a lot of the coffeeshop weed isnt what it is supposed to be :spank: . I know people who quick dry the weed what they sell to a coffeeshop and dry their private stash on the branch and give them a nice cure. You gotta hook up with the growers in holland to smoke the best weed (like everywhere) not the coffeeshops....

ojd,

What did you find very cheap in Haarlem?

I found staying at Nol's Willie Wortel Sativa Hotel good value @ 50 Euro a night for 2 people (now 55 Euro/night), and also the herb and hash when bought on Nol's 25% free discount.

I suppose price is all relative - you probably found Haarlem cheap overall because you're from London, one of the most expensive cities in the world, and comparing it to Amsterdam, also one of the most expensive cities.

Having been to Haarlem many times, and eaten at most of the restaurants, parked my car there several times around the town using parking meters, bought other things from the shops, done supermarket shopping, etc - i.e. daily cost of living stuff, it's not cheap in my experience.

However, I've never lived in London, and Amsterdam prices are very expensive for me.

In fact, I live in Italy now, and when I was in the UK, I lived in much cheaper areas than London.

To give an example, you can eat a pizza in a restaurant here in Italy, with a beer/other drink, for less than 10 Euro, or a full 3 course meal for less than 25 Euro, and that's in one of the most expensive areas, around Milan: it'd probably be double that in Haarlem, and more again in London or A'dam.

Added to that, Haarlem is pretty much a middle class town, with middle class (property) prices, especially in contrast with many other areas of Holland: I have also been researching flats and houses there, and property prices are fairly high compared with most of the Netherlands; although Amsterdam prices are a lot more.

So, I guess you found Haarlem cheap, but I think many other 'regular' folk wouldn't think so - it's all relative.

Peace

Hi ojd,

Ok cool, just wanted to clarify that price is relative to what you're used to, and I agree all the points you've just mentioned are plus points for Haarlem, and in addition to that, Haarlem generally has better quality herb and hash too: as the webmaster from Koffieshop Birdy on his virtual coffeeshop on YouTube clip ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr0SJgsvwX0 ) puts it - "Haarlem (don't you love how they prounouce Haarlem :) ) coffeeshops have to sell quality weed to be able to keep their visitors, instead of having a steady flow of tourists that might not even come back" (like in A'dam).

I would say, however, that a lot of Americans and foreigners from far off going to Holland for a week might prefer to stay in Amsterdam, as Haarlem can be *very* quiet in comparison. Haarlem does have its moments like on Saturday night, but it's nothing like A'dam for a lively atmosphere.

As you say, that could be what some people are looking for, a bit of peace and quiet, but even you went to the dam every day during your stay - I've stayed in Haarlem for a week, for example, and just been to A'dam for a few hours one afternoon, and I think a lot of Americans would just wish they'd booked a room in A'dam.

As a side note about prices, and about what I mentioned in my last post about the restaurant prices, and coincidentally, I was just reading Google News UK, and saw that in the Times today, the average price of a (3-course) meal in London is now £39.09! ( http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/article2434746.ece ), = 56.68 Euro, which is indeed at least double of Milan area! - I find that very expensive, and it's similar in Amsterdam, which is probably more like 50 Euro all in. If I think back, the meals in Haarlem last time I was there last September, were around 45 Euro all in for 1 person, for a 3 course meal with a drink or 2.

You also have to factor in the quality of the food and service - in Amsterdam the quality of the food and service is generally very low, unless you go to a very high end restaurant as I have done to get some decent food, lol

In Italy btw, it's top quality food in most places, apart from Milan city centre, lol

To constrast that with New York for instance, the average 3 course meal is £20/28 Euro, all in, including service charge, again all relative, and don't know the quality of food in New York, but probably no where near as good as Italy for that similar price.

Peace

PS. BTW ojd: I don't know if you realise it, but you're spelling Haarlem with only 1 'A' and not 2 as it should be.

You're probably thinking of Harlem in New York in the US, but it's spelled "Haarlem" in Holland.

That extra A makes a big difference to pronounciation: >> This is the pronounciation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nl-Haarlem.ogg

Mr Haze, are you sure Moppel's from Holland, and not the Netherlands, as Holland's only the small area shown on this map in yellow:

Ok cool Mr Haze, as a lot of people generalise the Netherlands as 'Holland'
