Off the shelf retail store screw-in LED and CFL bulb comparisons

Finally joining the party here. Thank you to all you guys who have contributed to this thread.

I have a mix of strains that all have an unknown baby daddy.

Mob boss x ?
Sour lemon x ?
Mammoth x ?

Seeds came from an outdoor grow here in Colorado. There were very few throughout but the Lemon seemed to have a fair amount in some buds. For that reason I suspect the pollen came from nanners on the Lemon. If I get all females I think its even more likely the Lemon hermed.

Anyway atm they are vegging under 12 x 8.5 watt @3000k , 4 x 8 watt @5000k and 2 x 14.5 watt @3000k for a total of 167 watts from 18 bulbs.

I'll be adding 10 x 13 watts this week to use for flowering. Also will be duplicating the original fixture to fire up a second closet. I'll move all but three into flower and continue vegging the rest. I'm chipping away at a four stage system in three closets. One will remain clones and veg and the other two will be flowered. I'm looking to harvest roughly once a month.

I've kinda ghetto grown these from the start and am only now getting things on track. I used recycled potting soil from a pile of discarded nursery flowers and a four bulb T8 fixture to get them this far. They have been under the LED bulbs for about a week now with noticeable positive results.

I moved into a house that needs a bunch of money thrown at it and just don't have funds to put into the grow atm. Fortunately it's almost done and this rig helps me get started sooner. Next will be a strip build if I dont change my mind first !!

First off all big thanks for this thread! It was really helpful to made my own led lamp! Total power: 198W 10 pieces of 15W-1500lm 2700K bulbs and 2 pieces of 24W 3000lm 6000K led bulbs.



I run one NL plant in DWC system. We are in the 9th week of flowering, but i am not so contented whit the bud's size.

they may not be the monster sized buds that some have posted
but nothing wrong with that plant to my eye
each plant has its quirks, may have been a naturally smaller bud genetics

Hey Charass,

Your plant looks good to me. In my little experience with these bulbs, the buds grow really tight and dense, so you might well be surprised by their weight at harvest time. Keep us posted

Expand/contract-able scissor LED screw-in light fixtures anyone?

Could tweak your light spacing, even add more sets of socket bars if using lower wattage bulbs, or vice versa, etc.

Idea just came to mind while looking at a cheap wooden pet gate...

Yes, you are right! The Nitrogen is too much! This is my first grow and i followed the feed chart. (Fertilizer: Aqua Supermix, PK13-14)
Maybe I do not use the main nutrient solution any longer, just pk13-14. What do you think ?

Alright guys just making an update. I happened to order one of those 7 socket adapters and as i was installing it, it fell down on my plant and at first i didnt see any damage so i hung the light and proceeded to do some LST and that's when I noticed the damage on my right top branch where it had split off when I topped it but it wasn't completely broke off so I took off the restraints and took a bread tie and rapped it around both main tops to hold it together and I think it's slowly healing. But anyways here she is a week later and seems to be doing great. Running 9 15w bulbs(5 blue 4 red). What's everybody's thought on defoliation and when and how to do it?

If it's in the way of bud sites, it's gone. I am an oddball, I don't start defoliating until i've switched to flower. Yeah, I might be costing some growth by stressing the plant, but why trim until you know what needs the light.

Hey all. Great thread here. After reading 50 pages of great work, I want to try and swap out my 200 watt 2700k 9000 lumen CFL corn bulb for an equivalent/better. My current bulb sits horizontally in an e39 socket and the entire roof of my box has solid reflective material and light 7.5 cu/ft of grow space. I'd like to keep the corn bulb for even light distribution.

Almost every light I've looked at has nowhere near the lumens my CFL is putting out which leaves me in the dark as to whether or not I should upgrade.

here's a few cents of my experience which is micro biased
i will say my 1 experience with leds was very positive
and watt for watt, i think they are tough to beat
in my micro chamber, i get near a ounce a grow, small grows, last run was with 27 watts of led, tiny grow
in my cfl grows, 3 x 26w, 78w total
both setups yield about the same total bud weight, led kicks bud on weight/watt
but which had the tighter, denser buds? cfl!
partly due to the setup, still, it shows there are benefits to other methods

Alright guys doin an update. Did some research and decided to go ahead and do a defoliation cuz i noticed there were a bunch of shoots not getting light so I trimmed off some fan leaves, lollipopped her, tied her down and she is doing great. There are shoots just coming out of the works. I originally had 8 tops but now there's gonna be like 30. Don't really have any nutes for flowering besides a bloom booster which is 10-54-10. Plan on going to farm and fleet to gets some foxfarms tiger bloom or making my own potassium nutes by making a banana peel brew that I saw online. Anyways let me know what y'all think.
