Off the shelf retail store screw-in LED and CFL bulb comparisons

non polarized plugs thats scary

I agree.

I didn't check the polarity of the wires before I soldered them on (although it's a polarized plug.) but I covered all the metal on the bulb with PVC electrical tape, effectively making them "double insulated".

As long as I or my plant doesn't touch metal, I'm safe.

However, if any one is installing sockets, you want to get the polarity right.

If I switch line and neutral to a socket, the metal threaded part of the the bulb is "live".

If you go to unscrew a bulb and it goes out, the threaded part of the bulb is still live untill you completely remove the bulb.

If your finger touches the metal base, you can still get a shock.

The live wire is still in contact with the base of the bulb (even though the bulb is off and half unscrewed) and you conduct power from line to ground and get a shock if you're grounded.

I did and will connect my sockets properly.

so i'm working with a new plant for the first time in a good while. have you guys run into noticeably-reduced stretch in flower vs other light sources?

i'm using good intensity at what should be comfortable height.

i'd mention the plant, (maybe just not stretchy) but almost nobody grows it.

I've noticed stretch can be impacted by several things. Light intensity, spectrum and RH/Temp foremost.

My first guess would be spectrum, since the higher up the Kelvin scale you go, the shorter your internode lengths will be. What spectrum are your lights? :D

I can't use my 4000K SILs to grow autoflowering strains, they just stay too low. I tried 2700K SILs, but the plants grow too slow with them. I wish I could find 3500K bulbs locally.

2700.

warm temps.

did notice in veg that it would stretch (under 5K) if the light was weak, like you'd expect. i have a hunch, will explore this wknd.

After a bunch of reading in this thread i decided to add a pic of one of my plants before i chop it all down. This is Auto viking NL by Nordenseeds. 101 days from seed, grown in soil under six 11w sils from Ikea. Three plants have shared this space and lightsource.

Thanks to everyone in here who got me into sils.

nice work.

I have a 1 and 7 splitter with 81 Watts. I believe that I got in the light to close to my plants. I put a light app on my phone. My question is would 20000 lux at the top of my canopy be sufficient. This is would be great if this was the correct as my phone app pegs out at 20000. Anybody know?

I think buried somewhere back in this thread someone was referencing 40k-70k lux as being optimum. I’m presently using a couple of cheap outdoor floods that are measuring 40k lux at 9”. I’ve had several single plant grows with my 150w HPS that we’re very successful and it’s only registering 27k lux at nine inches.

While I’m not using it as of yet, I, too, have the 7 socket adapter with 7X12w bulbs. I’ll crank it up this afternoon and do a comparative measurement.

I went the other route and use for indoors 2 240W CFL bulbs. With those and my 100 w fluro I get about 600 Watts of light on them.

I had the same problem when I switched from CFL (two 24 W bulbs) to five 10 W led's with the globes removed.

I could have the CFL's 4"-5" from the seedling and if was fine but the LED"s at that distance cooked my plant.

I had to raise my LED's to ~21" to not fry my seedling.

As the plant matured, it could grow toward the LED's until it got close to 4" away.

PS. I don't have a light meter, I'm gonna try that app.

The advantage of LEDs is that they are more efficient and the light is directed directly at the plant.

They put out more light per watt saving you money and generate less heat to deal with.

This is a quote from the start of the thread.

Hey blynx..

Wouldn't you get more lux at 6" that 9" ?

Is that a typo or am I missing something ?

PC buds that's nine from the bottom so it's actually 3 in from the light. That confuse me the first time I read it. So that's why 9 is greater than 6 because it's half the distance

I believe I cook my plant because I had it about 6inches away and now with the app is showing at 24 inches I have 20000 lux. I'm guessing it's 6 in it should be in around 80,000 maybe?

But wouldn't 12" from the bottom be right at the light and give maximum lux ?

Not sure why he did it that way. I guess great minds just think differently than I do. And he created such a great thread. If I can just get the distance correct. That's why I thought about using the light app on my phone see if that can help me from burning up my plant. I have a whole lot of yellow leaves.at first I thought it might have been Burned by over-fertilization or over-watering, but I cooked it

Raise the light to about 2' for a baby plant.

is that......shade?

hard to imagine him softballing it in any easier. i mean, the pictures alone should be more than enough. the guy even used a wooden ruler for a perfect visual prop like it was an elementary school class.

maybe you should "think" about dropping twenty whole dollars on a lux meter, and doing some "more" reading?
