Mtn. Nectar,
There are definitely multiple strains/seeds going around under the name Purple Haze. I agree with you that many Haze's are pure sativa or very close to it and hold very little to no indica expressions or body high at all. They are nice and cerebral and have a wide spectrum of amazing highs. The cut I was talking about did not turn substantially purple... the buds I got were VERY DARK green with orange hairs - It always looked the same and wreaked like pine-haze-ammonia. Literally one small smell and it was all you would smell for the next 5 minutes - so tingly it would almost make you sneeze. But the cut the uptown crew were growing commercially was truly one of the most balanced while still soaring strains I've smoked. Completely stoned to the bone.
The cut I am specifically looking for and talking about was from (in?) NY, was always the same. I'm pretty sure there is a good chance we are talking about different seed phenos and most likely even different "haze" genotypes or hybridizations... Northern Lights can have strong purple colorations in phenos - which was crossed left and right with hazes over decades - the bud i had could easily be some of the dankest of those processes.
But, out of curiosity which "straight PH" line (breeders) are you referring to, and what is the genetic lineage of it? I'm interested to hear the story and background.
Personally I have seen over 20+ different seed stocks over the past 10 years with the name "Purple haze" - many people using the same name are obviously talking about different things. This "purple haze", which seemed to come from the same sources as the Uptown haze - definitely had an indica kick in the mix... Since it was definitely commercially sold, I'm sure at one point a haze / indica hybrid was used to bring down the long flowering times and possibly increase yield for distribution. I'm fairly certain that this cut wasn't pure sativa even if other "Purple Hazes" are - however, if i ever got my hands on it - I would make sure no matter what I had it for life. =]
There was a batch or two where it must have been taken down early and definitely was lacking the indica backbone expression. That batch was a lot speedier / racier which is true to sativa genetics harvested early. However 95% of the time the Indica expressions shined through in the Uptown Purple Haze. It seems to have been bred into a pure haze to make this cut provide one of the warmest indica body highs in perfect harmony with the wonderful qualities of a soaring haze and of course commercially viable flowering times.
Anyone else have any encounters with the NY Purple Haze / Uptown haze piff?
