I grew the BCSC NL5 3 years ago, it was OK, quick, reasonably potent, but bland, so I ditched it.

IIRC, from reading up, it is not NL5 at all, it was a blend of several older NL lines, but not the real NL5 at all... which was what I was after..

Classic Seeds NL has got a lot of great reviews, meant to be the real deal NL, might run it again some time, Bodhi has a solid rep too.

I just love Nl. I had a Peaks mom forever that had radical potency, a serious branch breaker with massive yeild that finished full course in 49 days. Peaks is killer and Dr. Atomics is also very similar but i liked peaks better.

Joeys was a fine example of the strain but he's unfortunately gone for the time being.

If youre rich, buy sensi seeds. Its the basis for Peaks, BSCS, DR. Atomic and Joeys. Its the real deal.

BUT.... ive grown 4 differnet offering of NL and every single one had 2 pheno's. One was green, dense, medium wide leaf structure with a heavy yeild and fast finish. The other was a much more sativa looking, thin leaved, purpling late with less yeild and a 10 day later finish. For indoors one should choose the green pheno but outdoors the other pheno is better against mould.

Northern Lights was originally (Afghani X Thai) x Afghani; all NL has some Thai / narrow leaf influence, and depending on the selection, you'll see it op up to various degrees in populations derived from original stock.

orig NL with Thai....heh....Nevil should come thru and argue that...even Shanti will tell you theres no Thai in NL...just ask him,...
I just don't buy it...and never have...
I used to have a long bla bla NL5 thread here but its wiped...
Finding NL's?....like someone said....theres not 1 20yr old smoker who has a clue what NL is...so stick to older lines and Older well connected/studied breeders.....and its still only "made 4 Indoor super hyb".....
but Sativa NLs?....not where Im from....maybe after it went euro but its still a PNW breed and always will be...I stick to American made NLs...or Canadian...Just cause their the closest to the real deal for me....Easy, Piney n melt ya brain....simple enough....good luck finding them...and enjoy it when ya doob

Havn't tries TTechs NL6 but motarebs workin her so must have somethin worth seeing...
Bodhi's work speaks for itself...also very worthy IMO...
Thia's dom Blues lines...You really see or Feel Thai in NL?...thai woulda twisted NL lines into the same mash blues lines are..heh...so no way.....and IMO that was all a Euro Skunk bomb drop and its still rules those lines....
the plants talk...Lets see these Thai dom NLs please....

btw Im runing a inline sensi 95 NL5 from BlackBart right now....wana see it?...it def ain't sativa...heh...
all these images are of a isolated plant I made in 02..from a pk that said,,...
BCSC NL#5 Reefermans(pure) for $260 from Emory....next you'll hear claims how the NLs were so mashed in Canada..its just not true...live and learn...

Some of the best stuff I ever had the pleasure of tasting was some NL from Northern Cali I got for a camping trip. Supposed to be hardcore trout fishing and spent damn near the whole time sitting on big rocks in Kennedy Meadows contemplating my place in the universe. Strong, dark green and the piney-ist smoke ive ever had. Have yet to see that in any seed form since.

Sorry dude, Nevil himself said there is a chance the 1/4 Thai story could be true regarding NL5.

MNS has Ortega on offer. NL1 x NL5 from Shanti!

Nevil received the NL line from the Indian correct?...he didnt create it...He received allot of seed from all over the place....just like allot of ppl do...Nevil just took it to a new frontier....no biggie...
so sure...maybe the cut and seed that was sent overseas was hybridized with Thai..
Whats in the states as NL isn't the same as Euro or Can ver really..
their all a lil diff so gettin what ya had or want is the work..

and I didn't mean Skunk,...I meant NL to me is a Affi/Paki-HP hyb...or mainly Aff/Hindu base....
Affi_Hindu progression during Affi#1 stabilizing process..we all have our views tho...

Heres how some older cats view it...
NL#1 Afghan ibl
NL#2 Hindu Kush x Thai
NL#5 NL#1 x HP
NL#9 NL#1 x (White Widow x Durban)

I feel the Affi#1 and NL#1 are bout the same creature..
This was hit with a Hindu..NL#2...NL#2 was hindu dom NL..NL#1 Affi dom,,..NL5 perfect mix more hindu form , mixed effect profile....
just my 2 pents..

Shanti :The origins of the NL we have been using to breed with are Afghan, worked on in American in the 80s and Holland...one of the plants that has lead to a multitude of hybrids. There is no Thai in our version it is pretty much a 100% indica plant finishes 45-55 days and is exceptionally resinous....

That quote is what I grew...not sure what else to say...the plants were as close to what I smoked in the late 80s that I grew up on called NL's...and the closest ver I grew that was piney, compact, fast and resinous and had the wash over brain effect was this plant...
Ive run a grip of NL lines so have many pics and grows of them...the later ver of BCSC's NL5 wasn't the same as the early rel of it..So yea it all changes and usually not for the best either.....happy hunting

and just for looks heres the 3 main phenoms of the Sensi 95 set...
It looks like the same NL lines and Ive still yet to see them really run like Thai...
This is all a old line and it was made for pumpin out herb..Great line but still now a days its got 100x the competition..Is it still worthy?...you make that call when you can...and enjoy it

I can't stop laughing at Rainman ... that's how my nl was. All too many times I found myself lost in a thoughful daze. I do recall the piney oily flavor also...especially from the finger hash after harvesting :yoinks:

I think based on stuff I've been reading the 3 best Northern Lights are currently made by Dr. Atomic, Peakseeds, and Nirvana.

a good NL wont wreck your day but it will slow your as down allot..heh...

hey Robert not to counter point ya but heres my feel on those..
Im not sure bout Nirv...I have my reasons but their stock took a hard turn in 06 or 08?...
and I can drop pics of their WW, rhino, Papaya, Bubblicious, etc , etc...they were cheap back then ya know...so not sure bout you but I bought plenty...some good some not so much...but after 07 or so there was a diff...also Nirv's Hindu is wacked...
DrAtomics is funky...we did run it and I could dig up pics if you guys want..it was huge...really a beast of a plant but was more "Lime" than Pine...and didnt pack quite the same punch in the head...
Im always curious of beans tho...I trust beans more then humans..beans can't exaggerate..
Ive got grows and pics of these for those interested....
bcsc NL#5 reefs (pure)(mid-late 90s)
bcsc NL#5 (early 2k ver)
OldCali NL - no name - huge beast of a plant...directly from a "ndnguy"..heh..lov ya bro!)
Sensi 95 NL5 inline (NL2xNL5)
might have a few more....
keep it rollin

got a pack of BCSC Nl#5 from Marc Emery in late 1990's. Was the first indoor i ever ran along side White Widow. The NL was good but not as good or even close to todays chems, ogs, ect.... They were short, low odor, and easy to grow. Tasted mentholy with alittle sweetness but nothing special. The Widow was noticeable stronger. Id run her again but only for sentimental values.

hmmm you can see how NL#5 dominates in this cross i'm running. over and over again NL shows up in the genes and the final male in the cross (AB) is also NL#5.

(SSSDH (OJD CUT) x Jack Herer#22) X Aurora Borealis

To call it dank is an understaement...

NL from peak is great strain, But were it shines most is indoors. It is easy to notice the expressions with the NL2 side and the bcsc side. i had one plant that was lightly mutated and grew very sparse airy buds outdoors but once it was revegged indoors it became the most dense, squat and early plant i have seen, While the other pheno stretched more and had spear shaped buds. Very low odor on both, what odor was there was lemon/pledge like. Mild lemon taste. strong balanced high. Mind you these were grown under CFL's
