Growing in planters is pretty much the same anywhere. Nothing beats rotting bat poop, fish guts and compost for heathy plants.
You have moved 'bout 10 degrees North, just enough to see the Sun lower in the sky and up for a little bit longer during the days.
As CS pointed out, all those glaciations deposited vast amounts of high quality top soil in the great lakes basin. Couple that with a mild climate, predictable rain fall and you get some of the most productive farm land on the continent.
Strain selection? Almost anything you choose, select for quality.
