I like those custom smart pots good choice on the size to , i would chop off all the budding tips on the one that is flowering again about 6inchs or so, in my experience it will come back faster that way then trying to wait and let the tip revert on its own. The Best way ive found to keep em from flowering early is to veg indoors under 18 hrs of light then when they go outdoors in the spring setup cfl's over em and run the lights from 4am to 7am till the solstice .

Nice thread .

I am struggling with the idea of chopping the buds off.. again. Cutting six inches off every branch of that plant would be a massacre.

Scary thing is that there are early signs of flowering on some other plants too. what the fuck.

While I am hearing you guys say that this is so, others, whose opinions I value, do not agree.

Rather than pick off the flowers this time, I am going to hit her with a serious dose of N and maybe put a light on her all night long.
Best luck bro

Read on, sanchez. It won't be long before you ask yourself something like 'OMG WTF is this retard doing now?!'

Thanks for the encouragement. And thanks for checking in Paddi. The flowers don't seem to be any bigger today and, if it means anything, some of the white pistils have gone brown. My own weed-headed logic tells me this could be a sign that the plant is cutting off energy to the prosuction of the flowers. I'd appreciate an opinion as to whether this is complete fiction or if there is something to my theory. I have never seen a plant revert to veg without having plucked the flowers from her.

I hung out with Weed Santa in another nearby garden and learned a lot. First of all, my soil is not light enough. I should have added a half a sack of rice husks or perlite to the mix. I think I'd like to water more and my current soil mix seems to retain way too much moisture. Maybe I will rethink that opinion when I have huge rootmasses that require dicktons of water.

I also learned his rule of thumb, that in a 200 gallon space with quality bag dirt and a feeding schedule at least on par with something like the botanicare soil recipe, a six foot tall by six foot wide plant will yield 5 pounds. Obviously there are variables such as strains and amount of sunlight, but this is norcal and its just assumed that you are using a tried and true OD strain and have sufficient sunlight.

So... we'll see. I don't like to count my chickens, but this gives me something tangible in terms of size to shoot for and with which to gauge my expectations.

Some of the ladies in bloom are looking real nice. I'll take the camera out with me when I pull tarp in the AM. I like that light the best for budporn.

Photo Update

Photo Update

Overall, the garden is becoming more lush with each passing day. I'm still struggling with what to do about support. I have the materials to make a large tomato cage-like structure using 10' lengths of 1/2" EMT tubing and 12 gauge galvanized wire.

Hopefully i will get the prototype built today and decide once and for all what I am going to do. I just have to decide how conical to make the structure. The more of a point it comes to at the top, the sturdier it will be... the question is, are the plants going to be more than 9 feet tall?

Bottom line is that structure of some kind has to be implemented very soon because some of these ladies are growing wider than their pots.

The light dep is looking frosty. I am very pleased with most of what's going on in there.

whoa, man!
:lurk:

light dep is what's up!! I want to go there!

**edit: one question, what do you do to keep temp's down, you must have some kind of ventilation system right?

Nomad, great thread! Lot's of great information you've got scattered in this thread. keep up the great work man! i can't wait to see this bitches bloom!

When we pull the tarp at 8pm it is nice and cool... never over the 70's. When we pull them off at 8am, the hoop houses have had less than 30 minutes of tree-filtered and marginal direct sun or none at all. I tried my best to tuck the light dep area in a spot where there would be more natural shade during tarped hours. i have never measured the temps in there as the affordable thermometers lie and bad instruments can be responsible for major fuck-ups (non-calibrated ph meters, for example) so unless a tool is 100% reliable and calibratable, i tend not to use it anymore. I learned my lesson early on with those soil three way meters that supposedly tell you soil pH. They do not.

I do use fans inside for air movement since I had a little rust breakout. But we havent done that the last two nights cuz we got busy with other things and didint get the fans placed in time. Its humid as fuck in there when we pull the tarp off in the morning, but not overwhelmingly hot. And temps couldn't be too bad with the bud development looking that good. So I am leaving well enough alone.

Next year I am going to have some special tarps made (this year we are using 6 mil black plastic AND a silver sun blocker duratarp. Next year, I will have a custom tarp made with the 6mil sewn inside. I am also devising a light-baffled air exchange system. I've found some really cool non-reflective flanges that will screw together on either side of the tarp so that an outlet vent can be located right at the top of the tarp for max efficiency. The intake will be run thru the ground. If you wanted to hook A/C up to this, you could. In my current location, I don't see needing it.

I am considering pruning some of the bigger leaves so that there is better penetration of sunlight to some of the lower colas. I'm a little apprehensive of the task... Any advice appreciated. Hopefully one of my more experienced loved-ones will come by and school me a little.

Dude, what a comment! That's flippin' hilarious, but it takes one to know one, and you know your reader(s) very well it appears! Perv out on it! LMMFAO, and I'm not even stoned. Sweet!

Your plants are lookin' stellar too, nomaad! I'm glad to read you sorted out the rust stain issues. I have absolutely no advice to give you on the max size of your plants for support/cage purposes. Unfortunately mine have to remain stealthy so I don't have to address that issue - instead I have to cut and prune.

Keep on keepin' on, mi amigo - my best to you and yours!

Glad I could provide you with a laugh.

The prototype cage is done. I love it. Needs some tweaking on the next one... specifically, I'd put the wire rings at 12" apart rather than the 18" on the prototype.

2009_0712-Garden-087.jpg

Its a lot sturdier than it looks and with each bamboo crossbeam I put in, it gets stronger.

Total cost per 200 gallon pot is under 20$.

Light dep looks great...drooling over the bubba...

Cool design onthe cage, seems nice and sturdy. But I think the plant will grow up and out of it, as the cage is smallest at the top, where the mass of bud will be. You may be fine, just my hashed out thinking...will ponder it over tomorrow. Lookin good though.

Thanks for stopping by, gentlemen.

Fisher... I don't really like the prototype anymore. Gonna go back to the drawing board. If I dson't have it figured out in 48 hours, I'm going to put up the fencing. I've spent the morning buying a little more time, by putting up bamboo stakes to support individual branches... I can't possibly keep up with it like that, though.

I did a little bit of pruning on a couple of the farther-along ladies in bloom to allow better light penetration to the lower bud sites.

Thanks, Paddi.

So, tomorrow, I think we're going to build a second prototype. Instead of getting smaller at the top, its going to stay the same width. There will also be rings every 10 inches rather than every 18. The combination of these two factors is going to raise the rpice of each cage significantly. They will be closer to 30$ each just by increasing the size and frequency of the 12 gauge rings. boo.
