Must be marvelous to be able to grow tropical sativa lines in such a privileged equatorial location like Santa Marta, Colombia.
Hehe, oh man, that's a tall order there dubi...I'll try to be concise:
Well I sure have been fortunate this summer to have so many fine Ace strains to choose from. It really is hard to pick firm favorites because they are all so good in their own ways, and very enjoyable at all the different stages of the growing, curing and enjoying.
Panama x Bangi Haze- Tall sturdy structure each time I have run it, plants very similar each time. These fill out well with large buds, terrific aromas while growing. The cured product is always lemony in aroma after a few months, tasty sweet smoke, and the high is quite potent with long duration and strong relaxation although still a bit speedier than an indica cross. A real winner every time even though I had neglected this jar at first given how many strains I have at the moment.
Ethiopia x Mauritius- Extremely bushy and branchy structure. This thing was super dense with dozens of branches growing in every direction and the leaves were small. Flowers were small too and quite dainty. After 10 weeks or so it really starts smelling wonderful, delicate floral aromas, so sweet, like honeysuckle. I just loved growing this one although you have to be prepared for a long flowering of at least 16 weeks I would guess. Trimming was a bit tedious because of the zillions of tiny leaves, but I left it a bit rough cut "homestyle" and it holds up great long term in the jar. At any rate, the dried product loses a lot of that delicate aromatic essence but it still smokes quite sweet. I had one toke this morning and was pleasantly high for several hours so the potency is certainly there. Clear and functional with a heavy feeling on the eyes briefly but that passes and you just feel good for several hours after.
Purple Haze x Malawi- This one defied the description and remained bushy and manageable. Might be because I kept it in a 2 gallon pot. But anyway, it flowered for about 14-16 weeks maybe...buds got really heavy and dense, much chunkier than I thought they would given the size. They were quite hairy and I ended up with a very orange hair colored product...very dense and heavy nuggets and very high yield. The cured aroma is decent but not too memorable, although I get some black tea notes and sweet fermented hay. But holy cow, this one will hit you hard and get you pretty messed up with a long duration. I go a little easy on this one being the relatively light weight smoker that I am.
Panama x Honduras- Each time I have grown this one the plant has totally delighted me. It is always robust, flowers are somewhat airy and flexible, but they are huge and very numerous and weigh more than they look. The aromas absolutely kill me every time, strong lemon, Earl Grey tea, fermented fuel and slight floral notes. I could just sit and enjoy the smell of this plant all day every day. Absolutely amazing line and I am so glad to have several packs left...at any rate, the flowering is usually 14 weeks or so, yields are high. I love smoking the freshly dried product as the terpenes are so strong at this time and the high is speedy for a couple of weeks which always works well for me. But as it ages, the bud becomes more like black tea and fermented flowers along with a faded lemon. The high levels out and becomes more powerful and long lasting, but less speedy. I must have stuck away a couple of these colas with more moisture than I thought because I found a few specks of mold, but managed to save almost all of it. This is on my top 5 list for sure. Will grow another one this winter.
Punto Rojo- Cannabiogen, oh my god, what a plant. If you have 20 weeks and some space, this tall lanky girl is a treat. Very tall, long internodal space, tiny buds that build large foxtailed structures. The smell was making me crazy with it's sweet floral qualities. Honey, jasmine, slight citrus and delicate herbal notes. I hated to cut it down but it finally looked done enough and I wanted to shut my lights down for the summer. Anyway, clear slightly speedy high that is very functional. Excellent for music and working around the house. The cured herb is still sweet and those little foxtails makes for a great one hitter size bowl. The delicate terpenes really fade out in the jar, but I saved one jar of the freshly dried batch and put it in the freezer. I can pull out a bud and it still smells and smokes just like fresh. Amazing weed. I am growing several Red Snake this fall (Punto Rojo x Oxoacan79)
Panama Haze- Very robust plants, definitely in the same family structurally as the other Panama crosses. Mine made large heavy flowers that were rounder in shape than some others. Lots of long pistils that turn orange. Great aromas of lemon and herbal notes. I took this one at maybe 14-15 weeks too...heavy yielder of dense buds, very easy to trim. Initially I got some wet burlap, wet dog flavors in the smoke but that has turned into a really pleasant sweet flavor with strong incense quality believe it or not. Still sticky on the fingers...high is powerful and very long lasting. But not heavy like an indica, more up and energetic. Best at the end of the day when you have a long evening ahead of you. I give it very high marks.
Purple Honduras Haze- I did not do such a great job with this one, but still ended up with a fairly high yield. I did have a spot or two of botrytis because of the later spring harvest and higher humidity levels at that time. But, the colas were large, terpenes average on this example with the usual herbal aromas with some diesel and citrus in the mix. The flavor of the cured product is not the greatest to be honest so I have not smoked this one extensively, but I would not write this off and may run her again up the road. When I opened the jar recently and gave some away, my friend commented that the smell was very nice.
New Caledonia Sativa Pheno- Top 10 Ace strain for me. This plant did not get as large as I expected, had a rather dainty look to it, but the flowers did resemble some of the other photos I have seen. Delicious fruity and spicy aromas during the flowering, very sticky resins. Flowers were not huge on mine, but definitely big enough. I thought I had an intersex plant at first but it was not, although the flowers did always look somehow distinct from other strains for the whole flowering. The plant had personality, just like it's purple indica pheno leaning counterpart. I'm thinking this one went about 12-14 weeks. Anyway, yield was certainly great and the flowers have remained lovely in their rough homestyle trim and cure. Those aromas carry through and I am still getting tropical fruit salad, black pepper and sweet floral notes. The high is somewhat mild, but on the energetic side and quite clear. Really nice functional weed, good for mundane working tasks, enjoying the outdoors. I will definitely give this one another go this winter.
What a summer! Thanks Dubi, really have been enjoying these wonderful varieties.
NC1 main cola. The smell is incredibly sweet and the peach rings still clearly dominate. When working in the garden, I often have to stop for several minutes and let myself be seduced by her scent. So good. I am very glad i did not cut her down back then.
You could put a photo of its calyxes and flowers, it reminds me of a Cum lauder both in morphology and terpenes, and is on the way to another even more fruity phenotype, ........... Going back to New Caledonia, You are convincing me more and more, even though I am not very peach in cannabis

I've recently spoke with a few friends that are from New Caledonia. We've had long conversations about everything cannabis over there. When I showed them the pictures of your New Caledonia (I) offer, they instantly recognized it as being what's locally called "pakalolo". There are other varieties that are grown in the islands over there, like Bat, Duckpat (Duckfoot in french), Mango and a few others, and more recently many hybrids between the old varieties of the islands and NA's finest. Mind my spelling here.
As someone who lives on Maui and has been growing and selling here since 1970. Back then weed was 100 an oz and big heavy Sativa trees were what we grew. That's all we had. The first truly decent Sativa strain that came around was Mango and your 1977 timeline fits.
A lot of Hawaiian weed was built off those early strains. Mango was the first strain bred locally. Elephant had her roots in Mexico. Bloodweed came from Columbia. We also had a lot of different Thai and Vietnameese strains too.
