I posted similarly in Hombre del Mont's grow thread:

The Japanese broadcaster NHK has a POV tourist walk around show called "Somewhere Street". They have an episode where they check out New Caledonia. It really gives you a good feel for the place. Gotta watch it if you're growing this Strain or thinking about ordering some Seeds, and Especially if you've got harvested smoke and you want to know where it came from.

Search "somewhere street new caledonia", spark up and Enjoy!!

Thanks a lot Costa for your honest feedback about this new release, much appreciated. :)
Must be marvelous to be able to grow tropical sativa lines in such a privileged equatorial location like Santa Marta, Colombia.

Sorry about the hermie, It's much easier to offer hermie-free releases with 1:1 matings, but it's much much more difficult to achieve it in a single generation from a preservation run like this one, where many different females and males were reproduced in open pollination in order to preserve all the maximum desirable genetic diverisity, even after discarding every intersexed plant from initial very hermie-prone P1 generation of the landrace or heirloom. Despite the occasional hermie that can be easily detected in the first third of flowering, this New Caledonia sativa line is really worth to explore and i'm sure the quality of the effects and terpenes that made me fall in love with this genetics will be highly apprecciated by other sativa lovers as well, since there are very few tropical sativa lines left with such quality effects and fruity terpenes.

Glad you are finding in your 3 females (with more or less intensity or complexity) the signature ripe fruity terpenes this New Caledonian line offers. I also like a lot the flower traits of your NC 2 female with those thick, long and elegant pistils and not so rounded flower distribution, the ones looking like your NC female 2 are usually the most potent ones and with higher THC content.
All 3 females indeed look a priori like interesting phenos. Please, keep us updated! ;)

Thanks FletchF.Fletch saw a few travel docs about New Caledonia and looks like a lovely place to live or to visit for holidays

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, it's a blessing 😊. The Sierra Nevada is pure magic. But also quite challenging. Growing in the tropics is a relatively new area for me. Still have to adapt more. Learning everyday and lots of experimenting going on.
Because the remaining plants show really good potential, the hermie issue didn't bother me for too long or much. Would do it again.

Hi TexasTea, i've been thinking lately about the lovely tropical sativa harvests of different strains you have been doing last months. How would you compare the sativa New Caledonia plant you grew compared with other tropical sativas like Panama Haze, Purple Haze x Malawi, Mauritius x Ethiopian, Purple Honduras Haze, Honduras x Panama, Red Snake, .... which are your favorites and why ? Your insights are much appreciated friend.

Hehe, oh man, that's a tall order there dubi...I'll try to be concise:

Well I sure have been fortunate this summer to have so many fine Ace strains to choose from. It really is hard to pick firm favorites because they are all so good in their own ways, and very enjoyable at all the different stages of the growing, curing and enjoying.

Panama x Bangi Haze- Tall sturdy structure each time I have run it, plants very similar each time. These fill out well with large buds, terrific aromas while growing. The cured product is always lemony in aroma after a few months, tasty sweet smoke, and the high is quite potent with long duration and strong relaxation although still a bit speedier than an indica cross. A real winner every time even though I had neglected this jar at first given how many strains I have at the moment.

Ethiopia x Mauritius- Extremely bushy and branchy structure. This thing was super dense with dozens of branches growing in every direction and the leaves were small. Flowers were small too and quite dainty. After 10 weeks or so it really starts smelling wonderful, delicate floral aromas, so sweet, like honeysuckle. I just loved growing this one although you have to be prepared for a long flowering of at least 16 weeks I would guess. Trimming was a bit tedious because of the zillions of tiny leaves, but I left it a bit rough cut "homestyle" and it holds up great long term in the jar. At any rate, the dried product loses a lot of that delicate aromatic essence but it still smokes quite sweet. I had one toke this morning and was pleasantly high for several hours so the potency is certainly there. Clear and functional with a heavy feeling on the eyes briefly but that passes and you just feel good for several hours after.

Purple Haze x Malawi- This one defied the description and remained bushy and manageable. Might be because I kept it in a 2 gallon pot. But anyway, it flowered for about 14-16 weeks maybe...buds got really heavy and dense, much chunkier than I thought they would given the size. They were quite hairy and I ended up with a very orange hair colored product...very dense and heavy nuggets and very high yield. The cured aroma is decent but not too memorable, although I get some black tea notes and sweet fermented hay. But holy cow, this one will hit you hard and get you pretty messed up with a long duration. I go a little easy on this one being the relatively light weight smoker that I am. :)

Panama x Honduras- Each time I have grown this one the plant has totally delighted me. It is always robust, flowers are somewhat airy and flexible, but they are huge and very numerous and weigh more than they look. The aromas absolutely kill me every time, strong lemon, Earl Grey tea, fermented fuel and slight floral notes. I could just sit and enjoy the smell of this plant all day every day. Absolutely amazing line and I am so glad to have several packs left...at any rate, the flowering is usually 14 weeks or so, yields are high. I love smoking the freshly dried product as the terpenes are so strong at this time and the high is speedy for a couple of weeks which always works well for me. But as it ages, the bud becomes more like black tea and fermented flowers along with a faded lemon. The high levels out and becomes more powerful and long lasting, but less speedy. I must have stuck away a couple of these colas with more moisture than I thought because I found a few specks of mold, but managed to save almost all of it. This is on my top 5 list for sure. Will grow another one this winter.

Punto Rojo- Cannabiogen, oh my god, what a plant. If you have 20 weeks and some space, this tall lanky girl is a treat. Very tall, long internodal space, tiny buds that build large foxtailed structures. The smell was making me crazy with it's sweet floral qualities. Honey, jasmine, slight citrus and delicate herbal notes. I hated to cut it down but it finally looked done enough and I wanted to shut my lights down for the summer. Anyway, clear slightly speedy high that is very functional. Excellent for music and working around the house. The cured herb is still sweet and those little foxtails makes for a great one hitter size bowl. The delicate terpenes really fade out in the jar, but I saved one jar of the freshly dried batch and put it in the freezer. I can pull out a bud and it still smells and smokes just like fresh. Amazing weed. I am growing several Red Snake this fall (Punto Rojo x Oxoacan79)

Panama Haze- Very robust plants, definitely in the same family structurally as the other Panama crosses. Mine made large heavy flowers that were rounder in shape than some others. Lots of long pistils that turn orange. Great aromas of lemon and herbal notes. I took this one at maybe 14-15 weeks too...heavy yielder of dense buds, very easy to trim. Initially I got some wet burlap, wet dog flavors in the smoke but that has turned into a really pleasant sweet flavor with strong incense quality believe it or not. Still sticky on the fingers...high is powerful and very long lasting. But not heavy like an indica, more up and energetic. Best at the end of the day when you have a long evening ahead of you. I give it very high marks.

Purple Honduras Haze- I did not do such a great job with this one, but still ended up with a fairly high yield. I did have a spot or two of botrytis because of the later spring harvest and higher humidity levels at that time. But, the colas were large, terpenes average on this example with the usual herbal aromas with some diesel and citrus in the mix. The flavor of the cured product is not the greatest to be honest so I have not smoked this one extensively, but I would not write this off and may run her again up the road. When I opened the jar recently and gave some away, my friend commented that the smell was very nice.

New Caledonia Sativa Pheno- Top 10 Ace strain for me. This plant did not get as large as I expected, had a rather dainty look to it, but the flowers did resemble some of the other photos I have seen. Delicious fruity and spicy aromas during the flowering, very sticky resins. Flowers were not huge on mine, but definitely big enough. I thought I had an intersex plant at first but it was not, although the flowers did always look somehow distinct from other strains for the whole flowering. The plant had personality, just like it's purple indica pheno leaning counterpart. I'm thinking this one went about 12-14 weeks. Anyway, yield was certainly great and the flowers have remained lovely in their rough homestyle trim and cure. Those aromas carry through and I am still getting tropical fruit salad, black pepper and sweet floral notes. The high is somewhat mild, but on the energetic side and quite clear. Really nice functional weed, good for mundane working tasks, enjoying the outdoors. I will definitely give this one another go this winter.

What a summer! Thanks Dubi, really have been enjoying these wonderful varieties. :)

New Caledonia #23 a month old.The bigger one is a female and an absolute beast, biggest in the tent. The other two haven't showed yet but I would guess at least one more female.I had the awkward situation of having almost all reg seeds go female and lack of space forces me to keep only one.

A small update from the Sierra. Slowly they are heading for the home stretch. Their scent is extraordinary. The whole garden smells of them and my mouth waters when i think that i will soon be able to taste them. The rain is no longer quite so intense but still almost daily, mostly in the afternoon for a few hours. The sun burns strongly in the mornings and the temperatures go up quickly while the nights on the other hand are rather fresh. Perfect conditions for powdery mildew and in fact I have found the fungus on a few leaves of NC2 and a tiny patch of rotten flowers on a lower side shoot of NC3. But overall i am very impressed with the resistance of this variety. Not many strains I know are able to handle this conditions so well, especially in full flower.

NC1 main cola. The smell is incredibly sweet and the peach rings still clearly dominate. When working in the garden, I often have to stop for several minutes and let myself be seduced by her scent. So good. I am very glad i did not cut her down back then.

NC2, top of lower sidebrach
Very intense smell as well. It reminds on tropical fruit salad.

NC3 is still a bit slower in her development but in a good shape too and most likely will be the best producer.
Havent took a photo of her this time.

You could put a photo of its calyxes and flowers, it reminds me of a Cum lauder both in morphology and terpenes, and is on the way to another even more fruity phenotype, ........... Going back to New Caledonia, You are convincing me more and more, even though I am not very peach in cannabis

Thanks for that photo, it is normal for the quality of the photos to drop, I think it happens to all of us, perhaps it is due to server space, without a doubt it is very similar. I am observing it well and I remember that the amount of flowers was more massive, I only made a video of it so I am looking at its frames, but it is very very similar ........ I like that crossbow without a doubt NC happens to the list on the terrace for next year

Twelve days ago we got hit by another heavy tropical rainstorm in which NC2 got practically completely uprooted and nc1 was also dangerously slanted. I was able to straighten them up and secure them to at least wait for new moon. The lowest side shoots that could not be straightened up due to their weight were harvested directly and on 9th of this month everything else of the two plants. found very few tiny rotten spots on some buds but nearly nothing. Fantastic resistance in these conditions. During rainseason, most farmers in the region battle with budrot and powdery mildew even on their local, unfortunately mostly not so pure anymore, "criollo" sativa plants while this strain barely had any issues.
NC1 still a real stinker while NC2 got a a bit more discreet. Both look great, NC1 is the stickier of the two but produced, due to its size, way less. They are now hung up for drying.
NC3 seemed less impressed and is still standing straight in the area. I give it some more days. I have to revise my description of her a bit as her buds developed differently than expected. much more compact than her sisters who have the typical stacked calyx towers as a feature and her trichomes look bigger under the magnifying glass. Also her smell has developed positively and is now louder, sweet, tropical fruit and recently also a subtle note of ripe honeydew melon. Very promising.

NC3, photos from september 30th

Thank you so much TexasTea for your brief, yet accurate and detailed reports on the different ACE sativa strains you have grown lately indoors. :huggy:
I cannot thank you enough for your patience, dedication and interest to grow our sativa genetics in the great way you do :ying:
Your experience with sativa genetics indoors is now deep and long, and your insights are always much appreciated.
I should give a try to CBG's Punto Rojo soon, all the reports are really good and exciting.

Really touching that you rate highly the new New Caledonia, i got pretty excited about this new release, can't wait more sativa lovers start to experience this new exotic sativa line from the Pacific. :smoke:

A pleasure to see Syd Barrett friend you decided to germinate some New Caledonia from female #23 (the one with highest THC iirc) :) Super healthy growth, well done! Are you flowering at the end only one female ? If so, you will regret of not put to flower a few more of them ;)

Wow Costa :tiphat: What a joy to have the chance to see the New Caledonia line finishing in your tropical climate.
As a real subtropical sativa coming from humid islands, i'm glad to see the NC genetics passing the difficult mold resistance test of being grown outdoors in Colombia during rainy season
And you are right, their sweet tropical fruits aromas in late flowering are so seductive :yummy: I also spent long times last season smelling them while they were ripening with a huge smile on my face :) The more discreet smelling NCs later can be the funniest and most energetic to smoke. Hope they continue ripening well, you truly deserve to have a good harvest of them!

PD: It's a pitty Colombian growers have lost or no longer grow their old local sativa landraces. The Kush indica dom strains they are trying to introduce to Colombia to satisfy the 'cripa' and North American market simply don't grow well there in the tropics. Indica genetics flower too small (like toy plants) under constant tropical photoperiod close to 12/12 all year round, neither they handle well the very humid Colombian climate, being very prone to botrytis. Sooner or later Colommbian growers will realize that big field profitable grows require there vigorous tropical sativa genetics of great mold resistance and slow flowering onset, so plants can grow big and yield well, and the old Colombian lines were perfect for that, i hope that when they realize it won't be too late to preserve the old Colombian sativa landraces, which were among the best in the world.

I've recently spoke with a few friends that are from New Caledonia. We've had long conversations about everything cannabis over there. When I showed them the pictures of your New Caledonia (I) offer, they instantly recognized it as being what's locally called "pakalolo". There are other varieties that are grown in the islands over there, like Bat, Duckpat (Duckfoot in french), Mango and a few others, and more recently many hybrids between the old varieties of the islands and NA's finest. Mind my spelling here. :biglaugh:

Hi Zientist, I dont know anything. or very little. but I see some strange coincidences here. first that pakalolo. second ducksfoot, they grow it at Hawaii, Puna. they call it hawaiian webbed indica or ducksfoot because of webbed leafs. they have also strawberry web, simply webbies... and at third, one of the first "varieties" grown at Hawaii, was ... Mango! supposed to be red oaxacan x ghani.

As someone who lives on Maui and has been growing and selling here since 1970. Back then weed was 100 an oz and big heavy Sativa trees were what we grew. That's all we had. The first truly decent Sativa strain that came around was Mango and your 1977 timeline fits.

A lot of Hawaiian weed was built off those early strains. Mango was the first strain bred locally. Elephant had her roots in Mexico. Bloodweed came from Columbia. We also had a lot of different Thai and Vietnameese strains too.

I know that growers from Caledonia could get ducksfoot from Australia, and Mango, it can be whatever, everybody got some mango weed. etc. but anyway some funny coincidences. maybe it is because both are islands.

gotta love tropical island ganja!

Tested the first few NC1 & NC2 buds recently and I am very satisfied with the result. Conditions while drying were far from optimal. I hung them up outside under a palm roof. Its a, relatively, cool place with good air circulation but humidity is really high with rain everyday and sometimes fog. Don't have any closed room available. I live pretty simple and off the grid. Never thought about building a closed room for myself since I love to be in nature 24/7 but for my smoke it could be worth to think about it, hahaha. After 10 days they've got into the jars together with packs who maintain humidity on 58%. Im checking everyday and im very glad to not have found any fungi/rot but color got a bit dark.
Dried buds of NC1 smell nearly the same as on the plant, it amazes me every time I open the jar. Super sweet and fruity/peach. The great thing is that also the smoke tastes like this! One of the fruitiest I've ever experienced and im sure it will develop even more with time. Effect is quite potent, one hit and it goes straight to your head. It wakes you up. Full social weed. While High among many people, I often struggle with my self-confidence but with this one its the contrary. It gives me confidence and a desire to communicate with people while providing a certain trippy feeling as well. Oh, and it makes your eyes very red haha. Probably the best I've been able to grow in the Sierra so far.
NC2 is more subtle and it lost some of its fruitiness in the drying process. Nice looking, big sativa buds. Effect is activating, not too heavy. Perfect for me as daytime weed. Want to "do things" after smoking this.
Haven't tried NC3 yet, it needs some more days in the jar. But smell is promising and buds look potent.

Lightly trimmed NC2

So glad to read your smoke report Costa and that you are enjoying so much with your New Caledonian harvest :)
You perfectly described the happy, uplifting and expansive qualities i also have found in this new sativa and that makes me so enthusiastic about this release, the world needs more sativa effects like the ones coming from this New Caledonian, and the terpenes ain't bad at all neither, right ? ;)
