Our bank cards have had chips in them for nearly a decade now here in the UK.
It was supposed to prevent card fraud, but all that has happened is, now the scammers hang around at the cashpoint looking over your shoulder to get your PIN before they swipe your card, or they fit fake fascias to the machines, with a skimmer in the card part and a camera looking down at the keypad. I always check, give the front of the machine a good yank, and I hold my open wallet over my hand and the keypad when I put in my PIN.
And the muggers will hold a knife on you and march you to the cash machine.
With the old system, you reported the fraud to the bank, and you got your money back. Now, because Chip and pin is supposedly so secure, you are assumed to be lying, or to have been careless with your PIN.

Spend a $50 bill at Lowes and see if they ask you for any personal info. It took me awhile to catch on that it was only when I used larger bills. Alot of things can appear innocent in the attempt to get your info. This one I chalked up to a store policy on anti-counterfitting measures as it seems to only happen at Lowes.

In Italy, it is now illegal to make any payment over 50 Euros in cash.

where is the real difference of being chipped via a "smartphone"??? same shit is being applied via "mobile billing"/mobile metro tickets/...

once you have an account, a mobile phone and broadband interwebs via a fix mac address -> you become transparent to the data miners -> sure you can spice it up by uploading your pix to facepalmbook or other "social" services...

ps.: from what i hear from folks venturing to the USA, it seems cash is beeing frawned upon by shops more and more -> no workaround to plastic -> data trails...

Why are you telling me this? I was responding to somebody that said you can just turn it off. Tell that to that person, I am well aware of how to get around cell phones, but turning them off is not a good option. Thanks for your comment.
