ahoy chaps!

just back from the hydro store, got the fan hooked up and bugger me its loud, i mean the fan itself isn't making much noise but the airflow is absolutely obscene - way overkill. I'm going to need a speed controller, i'd wager this thing would cool 600-1000watts without a hassle, my needs are pretty meagre for what this thing is capable of!

anyone know if sucking air through a carbon filter as opposed to pushing air through it is quieter? it seems most of the noise is coming from the ducting right now but i'll switch it round if it'll be a bit quieter in the meantime before i can get a speed controller of some sort.

made some big changes guys, just spent a looong time stripping down and mounting the lights, basically removed the outer casings and just used the gear tray, lamp holder and part of the reflector. Now the carbon filter sits very neatly between the two lamps and theres a _lot_ more headroom.

Fan is located outside, on top of the box - can be hidden behind a pile of clothes or something.

i'll get some pics asap, and get some sort of fan speed controller! with the fan on without an intake vent the doors were pretty hard to open by hand - infact it damaged some of my light proofing it sucked them in so hard! put a intake vent in and the doors are still sucked shut, i'll likely add a second intake before I start to grow in there.

Heres todays progress - pretty much done, just a bit of tweaking, cutting another inlet, getting a fan speed controller to try and curb the obscene levels of airflow in this cab, installing two lamp holders for an extra 60w of 6400k cfls, getting the growing medium and pots sorted and finally buying some seeds to grow in it!

the vent system is a tricky thing to make stealthy, i might work something out (perhaps putting the fan in a silenced box - although it seems to me like most of the noise is coming from the air rushing through the duct and air being sucked through various small gaps, i've still to go around the edges with some sealant) or somehow incorporate the fan within the cabinet.

Anyway, pictures.

how the ballasts and lamp holders are mounted.

hole to cut in the back is for a 125mm duct outlet on the carbon filter, conveniently the exact same size as a cd - just trace around and cut - easy! I guess i'll run a bead of sealant around the edge with the filter installed, although its actually a pretty good fit.

Carbon filter mounted, i just pushed the duct end through the hole I made and secured the filter with a couple of lengths of string brought tight by 2 thick rubber bands screwed into the roof of the cabinet

Reflectors installed, i intend on extending the back edge of the reflectors all the way to the back wall with some aluminium duct tape but still need to go buy some of that stuff to make sure the ballasts are totally covered.

The camera on my phone doesnt like HPS light!

Much better headroom and neat profile! note single altogether too small intake, will cut one or two more along that back panel.

Closer view, not quite perfectly centred but best I can do with my meagre selection of tools and bodging instruments!

Systemair RVK 125mm 250m3/hour inline fan

And the fruits of tonights labour

Ok guys, think i've settled on the following:

ScrOG grow of 4 feminised femaleseeds northern lights and white widow, 2 of each.

Will be quite a tight fit in there but I'm going to try my best to make it work. Theres a shelf i can put in there that I can raise or lower, The screen will be attached to this shelf independent of the pots, should be able to keep a good distance from the lamps.

Soil will be Bio-Bizz allmix or similar, not decided on ferts yet but likely whatever I can pick up from the hydro store. I was thinking of using 1 gallon pots, should be large enough.

Plants will be lst'd from their first week alive, bent over and held down to promote as much lateral growth and spread as possible - i intend on having around 9-10inches between the top of the pots and the top of the screen.

So....

things to do:

cut more inlets
buy a fan speed controller
buy 2x30watt 6400k cfls, mount cfl lamp holders
touch up damaged paintwork
buy soil, ferts and pots
order seeds!
run some beads of sealant to cover small gaps
not eat for a month to cover the cost of all this!

very nice! the redesign made a huge difference in space in there, great job! cant imagine what kind of airflow that bigass fan has :yoinks: for an intake, i would make a 2"x10" rectangle and make a light trap box over it. that is what i plan on replacing my pvc elbows with after this grow. get soem seeds in there!

very nice job waydee!!! your cab is looking absolutely fantastic! the new setup gave you much more head room for you plants. I also think female seeds is the way to go! it is almost guaranteed that 4 out 4 plants are going to be female and you can start LSTing them pretty early as well. I would say 15 to 20 days of veg and them switch to flowering. A scrog would also be nice but it is a lot of work and that depends on how much time you are willing to spend on the setup (you already spent so much time and $).
Regarding the strains, I read in some post that NL is a very low odor strain, but i don't think that is a concern since you got that HUGE carbon filter and fan  , I would also take a look at paradise seeds and green house seeds female lines. the great white shark from GHS and sherazade from paradise look pretty nice to me, altough a bit more expensive than female seeds.
well, good luck on your grow and keep as posted!

Ok well I got a little work done today, added 80watts of cfl to boost the lumens in there a bit :) up to 88watts/sq ft now.

Picked up soil, need to find some perlite, was going to goto hydro store and get the nutes and fan speed controller but he's shut! hopefully he'll be open tomorrow.

Apart from that i'm pretty much ready to start, told you guys it'd be 2007 by the time I'm ready :) settled on femaleseeds NL to grow, nice safe option it seems... will order them tomorrow.

So near yet so far!

I've made 3 individual scrog screens, each is 19x19cm and has 16 roughly 1"sq holes. Think that'll be adequate?

still trying to track down a fan speed controller, its hard right now because a lot of the ventilation suppliers i've tried aren't open due to the holidays.

Seeds will be ordered tonight, I know I said i'd settled on femaleseeds NL but I took a look at dutch passion fem and passion seeds fem and saw a few that took my fancy there too! i wish i wasn't so indecisive :)

Ok guys well im sorry to make so many posts here but on the recommendation of a friend I just ordered a pack of Dutch Passion Orange Bud fems, all thats left is to get them germed when they arrive, find a fan speed controller and some nutes :)

Promised myself that I wont smoke until this grow is done, likely got some drug testing coming up fairly soon also so its in my best interest! will be a good return to the hobby with some nice orange bud to smoke hopefully :)

good to hear some progress man! that orange bud should be really really nice! are you doin the separate scrogs so you can move the plants around if need be? if so, great idea wiht your small space.

Hey man, yeah it looks pretty suitable - read some glowing recommendations for it on a strainguide mirror about it being very suitable for scrogging. Yeah each pot will have its own screen, not really much room to move them around (only just fit 3 1gallon pots/saucers in there) but it was just easier to build the screens like that. They're kinda ghetto, just squares of stiff wire and garden wire stretched across them in a grid shape, should work fine though.

They're possibly a little small but then the plants wont be huge, i'm thinking 16 budsites per plant should just about cover it - failing that there is room in front/behind of the screens for the odd errant shoot to go.

edit: Left the cab running overnight last night, let me tell you that fan removes a lot of heat! steady stream of warm air coming out of the fan, inside it feels warm but not overly so - can get my hand within an inch of the lights without it being uncomfortable, it really seems to be taking the heat out of there well. Only problem i can forsee is that the fan is venting into the larger wardrobe the cab is sitting in, its heating up the air in there pretty good but it should slowly dissipate through the various cracks, spaces in the main doors and whatnot. I'll get a thermometer to confirm that the cab is cool enough though.

Just a small update: 2 out of 3 seeds have shown little tails using the paper towel method and are now under the cfls, hopefully the remaining seed will crack sometime today.

as soon as they break the surface i'll start a new thread in grow diaries

Hey guys, two of the seeds have sprouted and are showing tiny first sets of leaves (not cotyledons), think its ok to turn the HPS's on? its been 2 days since they broke the surface and have been under the CFLs only. One seed is still to break the surface but I think she's close - took a little peek and the seed husk is beginning to crack open, she'll be a couple of days behind the others. I've put the slow one directly under the carbon filter (shelf is at its highest height, seedlings are ~6inches from the HPS's and ~4inches from CFLs) so she will be shielded a little from the HPS when she breaks the surface, i'm thinking she'll be fine but figured you guys would know better.

I'm waiting a week to begin ferting, does this sound about right? i'll post a few pics when i've got something a little more exciting than 3 newborns :)
