Good luck with the seeds!
Good luck with the seeds!
Interesting that the Sambar's mating is not photoperiod dependent. Thanks for teaching me.
Where I was taught to hunt, rifle and shotgun season for deer is open specifically during the height of mating. Archery season is five months in duration with the 'rut' about 3/8ths of the way through the season. Musket/muzzleloader season is interspersed through archery season. It is noteworthy to mention that said area is overrun by deer and the number of deer allowed to be harvested is greatly influenced by insurance companies as they loose much money repairing/replacing autos from deer/auto interactions, so to speak. Additionally, more does are allowed to be harvested than bucks. The deer are not considered feral as they are an indigenous species.
There is also large (feral) wild hog problem there as they do much damage to agriculture in many ways. I don't think rabbits are overpopulated, but they present problems in food and medicine gardens. The population of foxes has decreased but they are still allowed to be trapped or shot when posing a threat to farm animals, which are considered as property. Amphibians in general are declining where I learned to hunt, track, and trap.
It is interesting that you noted the heavy influence of the Thai's genetics upon (I'm guessing) the phenotype of HC x Thai. Have you pondered any possible reason(s) for this that you wish to share with us?
At this point the seed run is approximately 7+ weeks in? I noticed you considered a 1 kw (HPS?) to finish the seed run. From my experience, this approach will work well. A cheaper method, if you have the materials already, is CFL. As I understand it, CFL's spectrum is closer to that of sunlight. High Pressure Sodium, as I understand it, emits a spectrum which closely mimics that of autumn sunlight, the time during which seeds are produced in nature. Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken.
It is always interesting and very educational reading your posts. I hope you get more than enough seeds to last a lifetime from this cycle and then make more in the future. I hope the rain has relented where you are. Be careful on the road and in the bush.
Good luck with the seeds!
There is no eradication policy on any deer here...be it Sambar, Red, Fallow, Hog or Chital deer. Not enough studies have been done on the environmental impact of deer. There are worse ferals around...pigs(hogs), foxes, rabbits...and cane toads.
Deer are not a major threat...the others are.
At the moment they are a valuable resource. The pursuit of these animals earns a lot of people a lot of money. Mainly US weapon maufacturers I would suggest. Good old Winchester.
Thus the hunting season for each species is controlled depending on their mating habits. No hunting whilst breeding.
Not so for Sambar deer...they shag at any time of the year...so it's open season...yeeeh!
