Good luck with the seeds!

Good luck with the seeds!

There is no eradication policy on any deer here...be it Sambar, Red, Fallow, Hog or Chital deer. Not enough studies have been done on the environmental impact of deer. There are worse ferals around...pigs(hogs), foxes, rabbits...and cane toads.

Deer are not a major threat...the others are.

At the moment they are a valuable resource. The pursuit of these animals earns a lot of people a lot of money. Mainly US weapon maufacturers I would suggest. Good old Winchester.

Thus the hunting season for each species is controlled depending on their mating habits. No hunting whilst breeding.

Not so for Sambar deer...they shag at any time of the year...so it's open season...yeeeh!

Interesting that the Sambar's mating is not photoperiod dependent. Thanks for teaching me.

Where I was taught to hunt, rifle and shotgun season for deer is open specifically during the height of mating. Archery season is five months in duration with the 'rut' about 3/8ths of the way through the season. Musket/muzzleloader season is interspersed through archery season. It is noteworthy to mention that said area is overrun by deer and the number of deer allowed to be harvested is greatly influenced by insurance companies as they loose much money repairing/replacing autos from deer/auto interactions, so to speak. Additionally, more does are allowed to be harvested than bucks. The deer are not considered feral as they are an indigenous species.

There is also large (feral) wild hog problem there as they do much damage to agriculture in many ways. I don't think rabbits are overpopulated, but they present problems in food and medicine gardens. The population of foxes has decreased but they are still allowed to be trapped or shot when posing a threat to farm animals, which are considered as property. Amphibians in general are declining where I learned to hunt, track, and trap.

It is interesting that you noted the heavy influence of the Thai's genetics upon (I'm guessing) the phenotype of HC x Thai. Have you pondered any possible reason(s) for this that you wish to share with us?

At this point the seed run is approximately 7+ weeks in? I noticed you considered a 1 kw (HPS?) to finish the seed run. From my experience, this approach will work well. A cheaper method, if you have the materials already, is CFL. As I understand it, CFL's spectrum is closer to that of sunlight. High Pressure Sodium, as I understand it, emits a spectrum which closely mimics that of autumn sunlight, the time during which seeds are produced in nature. Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken.

It is always interesting and very educational reading your posts. I hope you get more than enough seeds to last a lifetime from this cycle and then make more in the future. I hope the rain has relented where you are. Be careful on the road and in the bush.

The thai pollen slowed down the flowering process on the indica and the cross. Now at 7 weeks....i would normally harvest clones by now..

Looks like a good cross though...I know the indica is stable...the sativa influence is very strong...the flowering period will increase and hopefully the stable traits of the indica will be passed on.

Then again it might just all go to shit.

7 weeks for seeds may turn into 9 weeks.

I'm not chopping them until the plants are nearly dead and seeds are falling.

Then I'm going hunting or fishing again.

7 WEEKS...HOW ARE THE SEEDS GOING?

7 WEEKS...HOW ARE THE SEEDS GOING?

So I thought I better heve a look. Cut off a small bud from an HC Indica x Thai.

THIS LITTLE BIT OF BUD

picture.php

PRODUCED THESE....A COUPLE OF HUNDRED SEEDS

picture.php

Some still have the calyx wrapped around them. I'm not worried about the pale ones. The feminised seed I made were very pale but still germinated.

The rest of the plants are loaded with seed so from this small sample I would say there are 1000's of seeds waiting.

I'll give them 5 more days.

I think I put enough pollen on.

Finally I finished the thread :) It took around 5 days to read slowly. I found good info and I'm now going for sog because HC :) I have adjust-a-wings reflector with dual 600. But this thread is not about that.

This thread had something magical and it touched me deeply. Great work!

I think I would go to sleep reading all this again! I like SOG grows...just need mother plants...for a shit load of clones.

Interesting insight regarding effect of Thia pollen.

The seeds look excellent!!!

The pollen is a bit weird. I actually chopped the backcross today. I was getting sick of the seeds falling out and trying to find them...many are missing in action.

SO WITH A FEW SHAKES A FEW HUNDRED CAME OUT....HC INDICA X THAI BACKCROSSED ONTO ITSELF

I'll get the rest of seeds out later when the plants are dry. There are plenty more in there.

I thought these seeds would mature later than the straight HC Indica but not so.

Cheers.

SEED HARVEST

SEED HARVEST

I've cut down all plants. Both varieties are producing mature seed.

Give them a couple of days to dry then we'll see whats inside.

A friend showed me his way of getting them out. When dry basically beat the crap out of them in a large esky or similar and the seeds will fall. Beats picking through every bud one seed at a time.

put them in a plastic bag or a pillow case and bash it on just about everything you can find..... works a treat :)

I might get the pillow case dirty....I'm using the esky and a cold beer while I'm doing it.

SEEDS ARE DONE

SEEDS ARE DONE

It's been pretty hot up here the last couple of days so I decided to dry the seeded plants out in direct sunlight.

I have no intention of smoking this stuff so I'm not worried about curing. When the seeds are out the plants get thrown out. This was purely a seed run.

It did not take long to dry the plants in the sun and wind.

So let's get the seeds out.

EMPTY ESKY, COLAS CUT DOWN A BIT....AND BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF THEM AGAINST THE SIDES

picture.php

ON EACH BASH I HEAR THE SPRINKLE OF SEED....THEY FALL STRAIGHT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE ESKY

picture.php

So what did we get. In the end I had 1 HC INDICA X THAI backcrossed on to itself and 4 HC INDICA all pollinated with the same Thai male.

THE BACKCROSS....ABOUT 500 SEEDS HERE

picture.php

AND THE HC INDICA X THAI....ABOUT 2000 SEEDS

picture.php

In the last pic they are about 1/2" deep in the bowl.

I'm not counting them individually....bugger that idea.

There is still plenty of seed left in the plant that would not come out. I can feel them but they can wait.

These plants were very small so it goes to show you don't need big plants to get a lot of seed.

On a bit of a break from work now so it's time to head bush for a bit of hunting and fishing. Might even go to Melbourne and catch up with friends. The new ute hasn't been on a long trip yet.

Cheers.

HC mate congratulations on your successful CS reversal and resulting females! (pity about the spider mites though, glad you were able to recover)
I only just read your 'experiment diary' for the first time today - it's the most comprehensive documentation of a CS experiment from start to finish I've ever seen so I've linked to it in my first post in my CS thread (see near the bottom)
Cheers

Thanks PhenoMenal, it was not a home made CS generator but the one I have works and it's made in Oz. I only tried it because of your thread. I see a lot of questions about ppm or EC of the liquid. I never measured it, just cooked it for 24 hours.

This process works just fine.

The seeds produced were female and from what I could see the progeny were identical to the original.

The strain lives on although has now been crossed.

But I still have some original CS produced mums just ticking over..

Cheers.

Just finished reading through the thread.....good stuff

So did you continue spraying the CS twice a day? (everyday?) At the beginning I think you said you were thinking of cutting back since the leaves were curling/acting funny.....but I didn't see you mention if you actually did (and the plant looked better towards the end).

Also since you had to manually pollinate, how often did you apply it?

I'm slowly starting up the HPS again. I've got 6 High Country Indica feminised on the go, 2 unknown sativas...believed to be of Thai origin and 3 males from a cross a friend did with High Country Indica and a very pleasant sativa cross.

HIGH COUNTRY INDICA CROSS MALES

View Image

Forgive my newbiness, as I'm new to growing, but how did you get this male? Did your friend cross the HC Indica (female?) and a sativa (male?), get seeds, and then some of the seeds turned out to become males? Definitely got better pollen from this than the CS one it appears

Thanks

I think I sprayed them once a day for one week before 12/12 and for two weeks after. This shit will eventually kill the plant....well mine nearly did.

I put the pollen on twice...had to grind the male flowers up though. Once at about two to rhree weeks into 12/12 and then at about four weeks.

The male was a cross of my plants and a Thai male. A friend grew them.

Must be time to see if these seeds germinate.
