My 1st Hydro - Hand Watered Bucket - NL

Hey guys, here's a nice upadte for you on something I did today.

I decided to put that Cinnamon clone into another hand watered bucket today so here's how I done it.

Firstly let's have a look at that Cinnamon clone.

Here we have the clone in the opaque container, and then a pic of the root starting to form. U can't see them well but there are a few small roots growing and also these little bumps.

Here is the clone next to the pot I'm using

Earlier in the thread it was recommended to not have a reservoir at the bottom of the pot due to potential root rot probs. So what I've done is place some small mesh over the holes to stop my medium falling through the bottom. and I'm using a small catch plate to act as a reservoir if I need it.

Also I've heeded advice on the mixture of perlite and vermiculite, I did a 50/50 mix on my NL bucket. Here I've opted for 3 parts perlite to 1 part vermiculite.

After mixing the medium and putting it into the pot I flushed it with ph7 water , made a small hole about 2/3cm and popped the clone into it. Note that I've not added any nutes yet. I'm not so sure when best to start a very weak nute application so any words of wisdom would be great...

For the next few days/weeks I'll try misting the clone to keep it moisturised untill the roots take hold.

Share your wisdom with me here guys/gals, this is the furthest I've got with clonng and want to do my best at making it a success...

start adding weak nutes (1/4 to 1/3 strength) as soon as you have 1" or so of roots, the medium is inert. pH 6.3-6.5 for the water. if u don't overfert or burn them, and always have 20% or so of runoff, u won't need to flush until harvest. this medium is excellent for knowing when to water because it is so light, lifting the pot will tell you the best times to water.

FYI: having a small res at the bottom of your bucket will not give you root rott.

Thanks Aeric

People tell me different thing about the root rot issue. I'm guessing it's down to their personal experiences, some have had it work and others have not. Best way for me is to try both ways and see how things go.

Oh yeah

The NL leaves are looking a bit waxy, especially the 2 new growths. Is this something to do with a hydro grow or am I up to no good?

NL generally looks waxy in my experience, if anything it might be a lil too much N.

Hey all

Here'sa quick update for you on my handwatered buckets.

The NL is doing very nicely. After I toppped her she really slowed down but now seems to be up and running well.

What I will do next is to top those two branches once they grow past 2 nodes each. That will give me 4 shoots per branch which is the 8 branches I'm after, I'm also toying with the idea of topping 2 of these braches so that I end up with 10 main shoots... we'll see

The Grapefruit clone is still alive :woohoo: . I've given her a very mild nute solution, (about 10% of recommended dosage) and mist her twice a day. I clipped her 2 oldest leaves as they were yellow with N deficiency, hopefully with the nutes now added she should start growing well.

How long should it take for her roots to take hold?? Remember that I had her in that opaque plastic container for close on 2 weeks and had a few small roots start and those bumps on her stem.

hell yeah! the more the merrier ;)

LST is still better though.... :dueling:

nice blunt, i like the passive approach.
would you ever try this with a res and dripper?

HOTC - U make me laugh dude, you and LST'ing should start dating!

Hey Sat

Funny you should mention. When I move and have my pucker 400W grow cab setup I think I'll give drip system a whirl. I've actually been thinking about it the last couple of days, I've even found a site here in SA that sell purpose built ress's. I'm eyeing up the 50L version.

Here's my plan. To have up to three plants in pots (around 10L) with a 60/40 perl/verm mix. To this I want to have a drip feed system linked to the reservoir, the pump will be linked to a digi timer to ensure short drip periods. To determine how long I should put the drip on for I'll firstly prepare a mock poy with the medium in it. I'll then give it a good watering and let it stand for a day. I'll then set the drip running and see how long it takes for runoff to occur. I'll then shorten this period by half and see if runoff occurs, I'm doing this because I notice that it takes time for the water to get through the medium (my NL hand watered bucket takes 500ml and only startes to runoff a couple of minutes later) .

Ideally I'll be looking for just a few drops of runoff to get through so that I don't end up wasting too much nutes. Naturally every week or so I'll increase the drip flow to compensate for plant growth.

Now before anyone chirps in that I could use a recycling reservoir, where runoff is fed back to the reservoir, I'm more interested in the no-recycling system. The reason is that I'd prefer to have nutrient supply that I do not have to constantly top up and adjust. All I'll need to do is to refill the reservoir when it runs low, this will make life easier for me and give me peace of mind if I'm away for a few days.

Whew. Yup Sat, like I said, I've been thinking about this one.

One thing I will do is give the bubbler a go and see how that does. I'll also have a soil grow in the same spot, just so I can see for myself the difference in results.

HOTC - you know me man, always trying new things, keeps the motivation up. PS the NH is looking tasty!

LOL BA!! :D

have you ever considered an ebb & flow system?

looking forward to the NH. i wonder how similar it is to the non-fem'd one. could get a couple of nice crosses going with T44 too..

yeah man, go for it...!!!

Top44 ain't to great from experience of growing 3 of them though, supposedly they finish fast, hence the name. A Nevill'e Haze cross that finished in less than half the time would be great!!

New crosses means loads of growing fun!

hey Blunt, if you aren't going to recirculate the nutes then why do you need a pump and timer set to short drip periods? i'm going to play with a homemade dripper too, just a res siphoning off into a passive regulator, and from there down a trickle filter and into the medium.

Good to see your grow's coming along nicely, Blunt Africa.
I know of few people who have topped a plant so young,
most usually wait until the 3rd internode at the least,
but Rep+ coming your way man...

Thanks Awol

I topped the NL again today, but this time after the second node on each shoot.
Here she is before the chop

And here she is after

From this I should get 8 shoots growing out, I'll then top each of these one more time to end up with 16 branches!!

All this topping will slow her growth down but I'm not in any rush to get her to bloom stage. I've got a 400W HPS cab in the pipeline and I'll only be flowering her in there, earliest will be a month from now...

healthy :D

isn't it 4 shoots.. then 8.. then 16? if you were to get 8 shoots now you'd need 4 shoots out of each current branch, correct?

cheers

hi blunt, looking good matey.
i'd like to try FIM sometime, just for shits 'n giggles and to see how many shoots i can get in one go. ever tried it?

I fimm'd once and also managed to get 3 shoots.

HOTC. With that NL I topped there are 4 shoots left on each of those 2 branches, so that makes 8. It might be difficult to see in the pic.

Oh yeah. I just found spider-fucking-mites on that cloned Cinnamon!! Bastards seem to crop up outta nowhere!! Anyways, I'll be applying a course of Malathion of the next week on the Cinnamon and the NL. I spotted mites and their eggs on the Cinnamon so I'll need to to repeat applications to make sure that I cook all their asses!! The plants are all young and small so it should not be a major problem.
