so far they are tearing up my mounds and my hillside but havent munched on the weed plants.

If they are tearing up mounds with plants in them they are doing root damage. Cut up roots could turn into a root infection of some sort, 30-50 gallons of water a day would aggravate that situation. Might not ever happen, hope it doesnt, things look great at your place. I'd trap like hell unless you want to spend for the propane cannon. cats and snakes wouldnt hurt either, another two cents worth.

what kind of traps can i use where i dont have to dig in the mounds? the smoke bombs sound ok i think . I'm so on the verge of getting some snakes, but it seems kind of crazy. i dont know where to get them and for sure dont know how to handle them

Thinning out plants = no fun!

The reward comes later, but it's hard work...especially with giants like you got going, schrews.
yah i really dont like pruning. some strains/plants need it more than others.
Hey Shcrews will you take an underskirt shot or two of the thinning/pruning please. Thanks
Keep up the good work bud
i tried to take some pics, they didnt come out very good sorry

Highest Respect for you Shcrews. You put a lot of time in on the prep, shows. The last pic really sums it up. Nicely done.

Btw. Have you ever walked out under those transmission lines at night with an 8' fluorescent bulb? It will light right up. Relocate when you can. That's really bad for your health. How's your AM reception up there? If you can hear those lines crackling, then you're too close.

If the gophers are making tunnels they usually kick out the dirt into a pile or just have an open tunnel. Remove the piled dirt until the tunnel is revealed. Cinch traps or traps like them are placed in the tunnel and when the gopher tries to pass they get caught. Fresh piles of dirt show recent activity and are the best places to trap at. Cats and snakes would help, but it sounds like gophers are already out of hand, so cats and snakes would have a lot of catching up to do, and may or may not be up to the challenge.

As far as finding snakes, I find them under tarps, under boards, generally around stored materials. Usually it's a bull or garden snake it seems

So are you just clearing out any inside growth maybe 8" from the stalk?
i try to do the tom hill "pistil whip" to all the growth inside the cages and leave the outer growth. this makes the plants explode outward/upward. this is especially important with bushy/branchy strains. as you can see Tom used trainwreck as an example

here's the explanation:
Tom Hill Pistil Whipping

yah it's always been bad here. never was an issue though until i switched to mounds, the wire baskets were protected. I should have done what tesseracting did and staple wire mesh all over them, alhough idk if that would have been possible since the soil and pots were already there, there would be gaps anyway unless i dug up all the soil and put more hardware cloth underneath , quite a sisyphean task

guess i'll order some traps. i hate dealing with dead animals though, it gives me goosebumps and shit

The chicken wires only on 3 mounds...I gave up on that...its really more so for rodents at the surface...but if you dont have any its pointless. Ive only seen little mice here so far. Its really the hardware cloth baskets tied together with galvanized wire that sticks up out of the mound that protects the main rootball from gopher attacks. I've read some posts on here that say the damage to the roots themselves outside of the mug is minimal but I don't know personally.

If it was me I'd get cats, trap snakes, and start blowing shit up before they get any ideas.

yah i forgot about those wire mug baskets. should have done those. I didnt anticipate the gopher problem since i never had to deal with it before, didn't realize the mounds were vulnerable unlike the wire pots. Anyway so far all the gopher holes are in the outer part of the mounds, not the middle near the stalk / inside the cages.

I'm not goin to get a cat i get too attached to animals. there's no snakes up here to trap , they stay away cuz of all the hawks. And i dont want to blow up my mounds. Ordering gopher traps seems to be my best option at this point

I'm on 1 acre and had pretty good luck with the victor black box. I kill 6 to 12 a year with them. It's tricky to set them right so the gopher doesn't back fill the hole but once you get it down they work pretty good. Oh when you see a new dirt mound from the gopher that is the best time to get them.

What Calisun said !!! I also use the same black box! It works very good,, I would get on them- as 1 gopher could take down a whole plant in one night ,& probably a matter of time ! Im not trying to inject a neg vib , I just had lots of experience with them,& i like this tread, & hate to see it happen ! SO I don't know how many you got (gophers) but if you have several I also recommend that black box that Calisun said ! probably get 2-3 traps, I have 2 my self !! I went on war path with them & yrs later i only rarely see one ! But i have also put many feet of wire 1/2 inch galv ;3 ft depth around hole growing area !! OK to catch (kill) !!! find newest mound ,dig & find hole set trap into hole ,I like to slant it facing down angle approx 30% make sure the 2 wires to trap are pretty clear not much dirt above them ! but put some dirt on areas of trap that would let light in ,,(keep the end with hole open to light only the hole thats made for that ) THIS IS HELPFULL--put a carrot that's sliced lengthwise ( for sent) just under the trap hole end & only 1-2 inches under! This will work 75% -85% of time ,,If sprong with no gopher! reset, They will come back , I never had to set more than 3 times & hardly ever more than twice, But usually first try !!! Its also nice to know you got them & not wonder ! Good luck, Don't wait much longer !!

Do you or a buddy have a real wood stove? I have one in the shed I still need to clean out. Seriously I know you doubt me on this so try it in a neutral spot. Sure you have other gopher mounds there. Just sprinkle a little ash on a fresh mound. One shovel full should do about 5 mounds. If you do all the mounds in a 50x50' spot, they will move from there. Water it in.

I saw it on some Homesteading vid, O'l timer in the thread told me about it. I didn't believe it either, till I tried it.

We had a cat that was very good at getting them. She also liked to shit down their hole. Maybe that's the key! I do know what you mean about loss. Sucks to get attached. Get a few cats and feed them on the porch. Don't let them in. Consider them workers. Animal shelter adopts them out. Bet it'd be more than delighted to hunt your hills.

The ash is the only thing that works here. Otherwise the lawn mower becomes a rock chucker.

I won't bug your thread again about it. Regardless I hope you kick their ass.

Re:pruning, thanks. So any growth besides fan leaves inside of the cage is totally removed? You would only have to do that once right?
