Mosaic Virus in Cannabis pics

Update: While I haven't bothered with a tissue analysis, I can tell my efforts to reduce media pH and increase micros is paying off. I had 10 Mango Haze ladies that all had aborted buds. Shriveled up calyxes with no white pistils or new growth. Just dead in their tracks.

Its been 20 days since I made my previous post, and 8 of my ten Mango Haze moms are flowering again. Ive got a couple that are still in really bad shape, but they may pull out of it like the others. Some of the Mango Haze are throwing out lots of white pistils and flowering great. The tops of the plants still haven't caught up to the lower branches of the plants, but its only a matter of time.

Ive got some pics to share too. You'll see the progression of flowering on the Mango Hazes. The last couple pics is Skunkman Haze/Skunk and she went through the same symptoms but is rocking now. Micro deficiencies take forever to recover from especially when media pH is high. I generally expect improvement by the end of 2 weeks, but this has taken around 3 for most.

If you have the same problems as Ive had, its not a virus. Your not supplying enough Micros and possibly Ca. Which Micros I can't tell you exactly, but for all of them, I had barely acceptable levels or deficient levels on my last soil test.

I thought I would share my two cents, since I have had many of the symptoms shown in this thread. Especially the pistils that die and turn black/dark brown and prevent flowering. Ive battled with this problem for many many months now. It was like, one day I just couldn't flower a plant, even though I had previous crops that had no such issues.

I got my media tested to see if it was a nutritional problem, and the results came back with low Ca, Mg, S. On the high end of normal levels of Na. Manganese wasn't even detectable, so I was clearly deficient in that. Zinc was poorly supplied. Other micros were just barely in the acceptable range including, Boron, Copper, and Iron.

This prompted me to purchase a Micronutrient mix to add to my fertilizer mix. And I made other changes to increase, Ca, Mg, and S to try and improve my situation.

I had two plants in 'flower' that clearly were not going to flower. The pistils all died quickly and the calyxes were small and hard. After testing the pH of the media, I saw that I needed to lower it from about 7 down to 6. I flushed the media first with water that had been ph'd to 4.5 to eliminate all alkalinity. Flushing doesn't reduce media pH. This was done to give me a reset, so I could take the corrective actions afterwards. Afterwards I put them on a Urea feed with additional Micros and Ca. An ammonium based fertilizer will lower pH faster, but 100% Urea will work as well, but just a bit slower. Within two weeks, both plants were flowering normally.

The Malawi Gold is slower to recover than her Skunk/Haze counterpart, but she is flowering normally though with no more pistils shriveling up. The Skunk/Haze mom has inches of new healthy growth coming out of the tips of many buds that looked horrible just a month ago. I actually think she'll deliver my biggest yield yet at this rate.

Another variable Ive encountered with my problems is that my water source is very high in Chlorine. 160 ppm, which is beyond levels that are considered tolerable by most plants. Thanks to Spurr Ive begun to use Ascorbic Acid to neutralize it. How much of a role its played Im unsure, but it definitely hasn't helped.

I dont believe that I personally have a virus with my plants. I think it was me not taking care of my ladies correctly. Im using a Peat/lite media with no extra amendments, so having a complete and balanced synthetic fertilizer is extremely important for me. I can't rely on Compost, etc to supply micros. Ive also had these problems before when I was using compost in my media, so it can happen either way.

Before everyone scraps their plants due to thinking its a virus, I suggest getting your media tested, as well as what you are feeding them if its synthetic. Only then will you have a better idea what is wrong. Im looking into finding a lab to test some petioles because I am still having these symptoms on other plants that are flowering, as well those that are not.

When I get that done, Ill report back with the reports along with visual symptoms at the time. Hopefully it'll help clear up some of these symptoms some of us have had repeatedly.

beautiful post bro!

has anyone tested a positive sample for tmv as of yet?

well i got these "elite" cuts of a sought after strain...but im pretty worried they have TMV...and now the rest of my stock is in jeopardy. gotta love growing...just when you think you got one problem figured out another 3 pop up...

Those do look viral. It's a shame. I would treat with aspirin to boost plants immune system. Some strains grow out of this, but it's a bitch trying to get the infection out of your environment once established. Actually, it's impossible, in my experience. You should be able to nurse the plants to harvest using aspirin, if you haven't already chucked them. This virus seems to be getting more common.

does this look like TMV??

my plants have been getting this crap, in veg the leaves start to yellow at the new growth points, the leaves get crinkly, leather like to papery and twisted and larger leaves fold up taco style, color goes from light green to pale white to greyish white. the older fans are not affected ar all and stay healthy

Just wanted to share my recent experience. I moved, as in my entire operation, to another property. Cleaned everything. New beans. New tent.

Well, I found about half of my new sprouts with signs of streak discoloration and some plants with the characteristic twisted leaves. Fuck. How do we overcome this?

hey funk! hope u'r well bro.

to me, it looks like upping the micros, w/o nec increasing N, & making sure the pH is in range. dialing it in to the demands of that particular cut, for your particular room.

So from what I hear you saying, you don't think it's a virus problem? I've got a few plants like this plus characteristic leaf curling.

I was thinking about adding aspirin, as others have.

Aspirin will help in most situations as it boosts plants own immune system.
TMV typically has twisted leaves, not "curled". There is a difference. Pix on first page of the thread shows twisted leaves.

Still think no? Here's another picture. Each leaf from different plants. Check out the weirdly twisted leaf in the middle, and discoloration on only the left side of the middle finger of the right leaf.

If it's not a virus I would be relieved, and would put these girls back in.

Those pix do look more like it. Virus is tough to deal with, but aspirin will help, IMO. Foliar spray with one aspirin tablet per 32 ounce sprayer and some penetrator if you have some, or a bit of dish soap, and add aspirin to nutrient solution @ one 325 MG tablet per gallon. It's tough to make a definitive diagnosis from pix, but I can see your point. Many plants grow out of TMV, and you can harvest successfully.
Have you thought about a test kit?

I hadn't, but I was under the impression it only showed signs for a certain strain. Would tobacco TMV show cannabis results? Is it the same virus?

I would not worry about any virus that's just how some ganja grow...I would not sweat it until it affects the yield...but that's just my two cents on this discussion...:watchplant:

I'm not sure of the particulars, but I don't think it is strain dependent. Some guys here have done the test. Go back through thread and read and maybe you can PM them. I have never used it, but lots of other guys have.

its weird...so i got cuts from my friend and 3/8 had those weird discoloration that looked like TMV. then i go to his mother room the other day and all his mothers dont have any signs of it! so im sure its not TMV, he mentioned the strain needs alot of cal/mag....

but 1/8 looks super shitty..the fan leaves keep crisping up and falling offf, and looks like TMV. so im gonna try and get a new round of cuts..

Many plants grow out of TMV, so, although it's possible the mothers once had it, they might have grown out of it.
