Monsanto vs. Mother Earth

Thanks Trichrider, I had that explained to me by a crazy hippy whilst very a few years ago, great to actually read through the genuine article (no puns intended) and make sense of it myself, some really terrifying stuff in there.
South Africa really has been saturated with gmo's recently, gm soybeans and maize are popping up in all kinds of unexpected places, I've been avoiding them like the plague they are..

What a crap article!

First of all on the Tetanus vaccinataions:

http://www.who.int/immunization_monitoring/milstien.pdf

The main aim of the program was to eradicate neonatal tetanus, which sort of explains why it was given to women of child bearing age no?

He goes on quite a bit about eugenics and genetics (I had to laugh when he called molecular biology a pseudo-science!):

eugenics, later renamed genetics

Had me laughing again :p The structure of DNA was not ascertained until 1953 and the idea that it might be the molecule of inheritance was not determined in any certainty for years after that.

I just love how he arbitrarily refers to the bank as 'The Doomsday Vault' and then draws the conclusion that it must be being made in preparation for some kind of apocalypse! He's completely right, all those sponsoring the bank have an interest in maintaining a store of biological information that they can raid far into the future for useful genes/proteins; this is how these companies make their money after all.

The existence of the Svalbard bank and patented seeds shows that we urgently need a radical rethink of our patent system, not that there is some NWO conspiracy to eliminate all us poor people so they can live in some Penultimate Truth style utopia :tiphat:

We're in the middle of a major extinction crisis right now so I personally don't think it's a bad idea to ensure we have a complete record of what is alive today before we kill it all off.

Agreed, but you must admit that the financial backers (if the article is accurate) make the concept a lot more disconcerting. Anything with Monsanto behind it scares me...

Completely agree, Monsanto is a terrifying corporation, one of many in the world!

Trich, I think you need to examine what a corporation is first mate! We tend to assign them human motives which really fucks our perspective of their motives. At the end of the day they have only one and that is making as much profit as possible. The result of this tends to be that those who gain a lead will use pretty nasty tactics to ensure that that mon/oligopoly remains and they can milk in the cash without having to worry about change/serious competition.

The concentration of wealth into the hands of a select few is a direct by-product of the economic system we've found ourselves in for the past 200 or so years, Marx predicted much of what we see in the financial world today! Money makes money, those that have it get richer and those that don't find themselves falling further and further into debt.

So what's the result of this? There are a large number of legally recognized individuals who act according to very alien motives with a 'psychological profile' (if you could give a corp. that) akin to a psychopath. Do they care about the health and well-being of people? Only if it makes them money. Do they care about denying food to the world (let's not forget that Monsanto cannot do this; there's too much fertile seed already around)? Again, only if it means making money. All the disasters and scandals you see involving multinationals do not occur because there's some conspiracy being formed by the wealthy elite in their secret castles, it means that someone at some point realized that their company could make more money by breaking rules and simply paying whatever fine is levied if/when they get caught. This is the only motive.

Not saying Monsanto is innocent because they aren't by any means, but it's almost comical how ignorant their haters are of the actual facts. It's the equivalent of Beavis & Butthead trying to do science ... Please read a book!

The best way to thwart them, is to only buy organic, non-GMO, locally grown/produced food, and support the local economy.

Farmer's Markets, food co-ops, local farmers, CSA memberships...

Weed killer ingredient used on GMO crops found in a whole lot of urine
11 hrs ago

If you follow the biotech industry, you may have noticed the sector has been fielding its share of health concerns lately around genetically-modified crops. Results from a recent study by Friends of the Earth Europe showed that 44 percent of urine taken from European city-dwellers across 18 countries was contaminated with glyphosate. Glyphosate is the primary ingredient in Monsanto's weed-killer Roundup, and is also used widely in the United States. At high levels of exposure, the herbicide has been linked to cancer, Parkinson's and infertility. Researchers are especially concerned because the samples were taken from people who have never handled or used it. Glyphosate is used extensively on genetically modified crops which have been engineered to be resistant to this herbicide. [Source]

It's scary as hell. I guess it's like DDT and all these other non-degradable chemicals that linger in the soil; where-ever you use it, it's going to poison the ground for years to come :(

This video/set of videos really opened my eyes to the situation, our oceans are full of trash and toxins at the microscopic level and lower, it just ain't about trash and garbage dumps anymore...
