I mostly use weed, bud or smoke with people I know or friends, but use cannabis in "mixed" company ( anti cannabis types basically).
Technically weed is an undesirable plant but I use that term anyway, despite it meaning the exact opposite of what I mean to say. Old habit I suppose.

Before he died, my best friend and I always referred to it as "parts." Especially over the phone. "Hey, got any parts?", or "I'm looking for parts." Him being a mechanic, and both of us bikers, that was a no brainer.

Now it's "cheese" among my friends. One of the guys had a batch of Cheese a while back, and it just stuck. Weed is now "Cheese" no mater what it is.
