Dr333, I was just thinking, r u doing any thing to stop the surrounding dirt from washing or caving in around your smarties ?

Hey bottomland, actually I'm not because the top foot of dirt is pretty much solid clay and matted with roots. And man they were a pain in the ass to digg. Last year we dug 5 holes on the back side of the cage because it was slightly higher up than the front side, and none of them holes caved in on me last year so I have no worries.

This year I dug the other 5 holes on the front side of the cage so all of the smarties are recessed in the ground as you can see. We got a good headstart this year so I wanted the extra 15 inches of headroom. Plus it does keep the smarties a little cooler. And I have seen no side effects of having the pots recessed they still get all the air they need and air prune the roots like they should. Except for the bottom when they get older, the roots go thru down into the native dirt and luckily the clay black dirt mixture drains just good enough to cause zero problems. I know that because of last years plants In the back half of the cage were recessed and even with a good amount of rain there was no drainage issues.

Acridlab, what's up man??? I'm glad U stopped by, anyways man thank you for the compliment I appreciate it. I forgot to mention when I started this thread that I'm cautious about plant support outdoors, Michigan being Michigan has put me in rough spots breaking branches in years past so I try and learn from my mistakes the best I can.

So this year as you can see all the girls are caged the 3 that aren't are getting caged this week. Those cages are initial support for early in the year also doubling as a training aid. In about a month I will get our 1"x 1" x 8ft tall posts anchored in the ground in a square shape around each plant and use those posts to anchor the plastic trellis netting and that should be enough to support the tall wide veg growth and then the Heavy buds late in the year. We shall see!!

Whats up, doc😃 u r definitely welcome. And looks like u have everything under control, man..And lots of good people in here giving great advice etc.. Ill be lurkin.. Peacecout

By the looks yours are going to be bigger than those, at this date yours are bigger than mine were. I would recommend getting in there and lolly-popping the shit out of the insides of those plants before they get all cluster fucked...looking like your setting up for a very nice fall.

Hey zdub what's up?? The girls you shown were gorgeous and id be more than happy to end up with girls like that 21 days into August. If you don't mind me asking what kind of numbers did U pull off of those??

And I'm def. getting in there this week to thin out some of the insides before it gets out of hand, you called it brother!!

Nice, clean and green... When that baby hits 88 days your gonna see some serious sh#$!

Thanks for the love acrid!! Im trying to kill it this year brother!!

dang dude, your girls are blowing up. What do you have in the smarties? super soil? soil-less? tom hills recipe? the biggest that year was 7 and avg about 4

What up Dubb!! I'm glad to see everything is coming along nice and vigorous, I am a little worried about things stalling out because of the small pots. I'm going to be pushing these 65 gallon smarties to there limit I'm thinking. In past years roots have grown right thru the bottom of the pots into the ground underneath so hopefully that will help aid in consistent growth throughout the year as long as I keep up on feeding (i top dress with rainbow mix veg) and watering. Next year we are at least going with 200 gal pots, unfortunately the funds weren't there this year but not next year I'm done with these small smarties lol.

Haha damn Dubb I'm reluctant to tell U what soil mix we use because its embarrassing, lol its bagged. Fox Farm ocean forest.... :/ Hahaha!! We get it for a decent price so it works out good. The only thing we do to it is mix in great white and organicare pure grow which I'm sure u know is just a bagged dry fert with a nice mix of supplements. But other than that its nothing special.

Definitely will be on the lookout Stasis, I appreciate the heads up. We ran her last year and wasent too bad but I'm always on the lookout!! I do weekly preventative sprays, organicide 3 in 1, and neem concentrate gonna add in BT soon as well. I'll do that until i see first Sign of budset. That plus keeping things as healthy as possible do wonders for us. But this is Michigan lol and there's always that possibility the weather rears its ugly head to early lol U know how it is.
