MH vs HPS for yield?

D

Let's relax guys. :)

Remember, Philips is head and shoulders above everyone else when it comes to grow lamps

I've had a few beers tonight tho... :)

Love that little 315...in all kinds of different ways...hard to beat...so nice.

"Philips Elite Agro 315W T12 Lamp provides a compact and
efficient metal halide solution for the horticulture market.
This lamp, combined with the efficient ballast, provides
outstanding growth light performance over the life of the
product."

How is it efficient to have 3-4 bulbs and ballasts to do the same thing 1 bulb and ballast can do??

It must be impossible to make this bulb stronger?? Why only 315w?

And how is it efficient to use a 1kw lamp when all you want or need is 315?

I don't know why it hasn't been scaled up other than the CMH lamps operate at very high internal pressures, like significantly above 2000 psi. It may be that operating at those pressures can't be safely done if spread over the larger area necessary for a bigger lamp.

Again, nowhere does it say that it is the "best" - it says that it is the most efficient. HPS is very efficient, that's why it is the preferred lamp for industrial and street lighting. Unfortunately, it also gives piss-poor color rendition.

Dude? Read their web page, it is in their horticulture lineup. It is the best high watt grow lamp Philips has ever produced.

I read their brochure that you linked, and I read your quotation. The best high watt grow light is a completely different thing than simply "the best".

A 315w cant grow big plants, the thing is only 33000 lumens.

And don't tell me lumens don't matter, extreme light matters.

Okay? What is it then if it is not their best high watt grow lamp? What is their best high watt grow lamp? Why is it in their horticulture section?

I'm sure that it probably is the best high wattage conventional grow light that they have built. That does not mean that it is the best grow lamp that they have ever built - the statement restricts what they are addressing.

You continually miss the point that not everyone wants to run 1kw lamps. I know all about HPS - after 30+ years of industrial electrical work, I've installed literally thousands of them. I grew under them over 30 years ago. They are wonderful for their intended application, but they make colors, and particularly plants, look like shit. I enjoy tending my garden, and have no interest in doing it under a light that makes it look like a factory floor.

If I was doing this for a living, I'd be using Gavita's and the 1000 DE 400v lamp. I'm not, so I don't. I've never claimed that it would be best for you - as far as I went was saying that the 315w would kick the shit out of a 400w HPS. I stand by that remark.

Get some method seven glasses, it makes HPS look like MH:)

And Gavita got killed going against Sunlight Supply AC/DE hoods.

400w Horti HPS would destroy your bulb in yield, not even a contest. the Horti is 55000 lumens to your bulbs 33000 lumens. Your bulb would get crushed.

I seriously doubt it. Lumens are totally irrelevant. Got an SPD chart?

Here's the Philips Global link to their lineup...for some reason the DE isn't in there, that I can see anyway. What's really cool, and besides the point are their medical and special lamps....
http://www.ecat.lighting.philips.com/l/lamps/20925/cat/

Anyway, I'm not coming from this from any point of bias...just the facts and an engineering standpoint...that's all.

Philips has many great bulbs...the 315, purposely made med wattage imo, just stands out, imo, that all....all things being considered...and calculated, etc.

I wish the 315w bulb you like was made into a 600-1000w, I would try them out.

I kinda liked your suggestion of using 2 in a hood, but to be honest...I'm not entirely sure it's needed (cause I wondered the same thing), to get the productivity that a commercial op needs.

The lamp delivers an exceptional amount of light (useable...important) at the expense of so much unnecessary crap...from both MH and HPS.

The only way to tell I guess, would be to wait and see what happens...or get ahead of the curve...
If a guy does the math...it should produce as much for a lot less $ and other undesirables.

The 2-in-a-hood thing is what I plan on doing for my larger tent. I use the Bell Lighting 600MV hoods, and two of them are a pain in the ass in there with the carbon filter, etc. The Bell 1000MV looks like it would be perfect for a lamp at each end, and then I can put the small hoods back to their intended purpose when I bought them.
