Ok cool octo, and not to be an ass, but I wouldn't recommend doing that either - you can say they're not welcome inside your property, but I wouldn't say they're not welcome on the doorstep. That raises alarm bells too, and would get their backs up.

I say the best policy is to act like a good citizen, and act like you're trying to help them as much as possible, when they come out with some BS knock and talk story, but also assert your right not to let them in...and also have your foot behind the door so they can't push their way in ;)

Ha ha in BC a lot of the cops don't bother with a warrant. They just come in and tear your shit down, and that is that. Call a lawyer nothing happens. I heard that most cities in the Lower Mainland have a backlog of grow op complaints numbering in the hundreds...

edit: Also, knock and talks don't work if you don't answer. "I smell MJ"... you're talking to a door, man!

Yeah I dont answer unless they are looking at me through the window or they KNOW I am inside. Otherwise dont answer it just makes for bad conversation. Its better to avoid and plan for bad thing than to react to one!

Here's my story to show if you have things squared away at all times then there's less chance of any problems.

My helper gave me a new med that's supposed to be taken with food. I took the med prior to a shower. passed out and she called 911 and hung up scared. I came to and she told me what happened. Before anyone got there, anything out of place ie.. volcanoe, bag, open doors were all secured. Soon inside my bedrom were 4 fireman, a cop or two, maybe even paramedics. Once inside, I declined any medical help and said i'd be ok just took a new med without food like i was supposed to.They all left, but what they didn't know or could smell was about a half pound of weed in various containers, hundreds of seeds, hash, paraphinalia, in my closed closet about 3 feet away from them. My other rooms with closed doors had my hydro stuff and veg closet with even more stuff.
Point being they were that close to all my stuff but they can't just open closed doors either room or closet if they don't have the probable cause to do so. Keep things in order at all times. Unexpected emergencies happen so the best defense is a good offense.

Rules For Renting Houses

Rules For Renting Houses

1. I wont rent from the Owners themselves.

Especially if they just lived there. I've found that they are always too nosy and will show up at
unexpected, unannounced times.

2. I only rent from property managers/real estate agents.

I always ask questions like "Is the owner looking to sell the house" (This one is to see if 1. They might be looking to refinance or have the house appraised soon or just have people trouncing throught the house while they give tours to potential buyers or these days if they might be behind on their mortgages) or "Does the owner live in this city" (this is to see if I might have a problem with the owner dropping in just to welcome me or whatever, note this happens more in small towns not so much in large cities) or "Do you have any other property's from this owner that i might look at" (this is to see if the owner has lots of A. Money/Assets B. If they answer "yes" then more often than not this will let me know that the Owner is probably too busy or just not concerned with small things i.e. "renters" and probably has the Agent handle all their "renters" affairs/needs.

3. I always look for house's that have been some what rundown.

(not old though) I mean things like the yard hasn't been taken care of, bushes left unpruned, weeds growing, carpets with stains, walls with small holes in them from pictures being hung unpatched, ect, ect. (I know from experience that if the house looks this way two things are evident 1. The Agent/Property Manager doesn't care much about the state of the house nor the tenant. and 2. Either the Owner is way too busy, or neither do they.

4. I always make sure the house is not too old.

(Nothing more than 10 years) if it is then I always inquire about the 1. State of the Water Heater. 2. State of the Central Air. 3. State of all Appliances in the home. My goal here is to not have to have any repair men in my home ever.

5. I always inquire about the past tenants.

My doing so is to find out if they have caused any problems with the neighbors or the police. If they have had major problems with the police I dont rent. If they have had minor problems with the police via the neighbors calling the cops on them, I talk to the neighbors and find out why. (the tenants in my current house caused all sorts of neighborhood problems, parties, loud barking dogs, stealing cable, unkept lawn, ect, ect.) This is good however because I find these things out and then do the opposite, which in turn works greatly in my favor because I look like a godsend comparably. (This is as long as you are a professional and I suggest being this way especially in this business)

There are other things I look for too like, Garage door without little windows at the top of it, Front doors without little windows in them, Large semi cheap horizontal white or off white blinds over the windows (hate horizontal blinds) I also look for lofts because I like to build rooms inside of rooms especially for flowering!

That's a great list there MadCow; thanks for contributing :)

Question for Apt Growers:

If you were busted, did the PO have a warrant?

Considering that you are renting, I would believe that if they entered with the landlord agency, they wouldn't need a warrant at all.

Can anybody confirm / deny this ?

No they can't. The pigs need a search warrant to enter your premesis. The landlord can be used to gain entry into your place instead of breaking down the door. But that's about all the lanlord can do. He can gbreak in your home and collect evidence, but not the pigs.

green tea, most growers rent, whether it's a house or apartment, and the police still need a warrant to search, no matter where it is, or how it's rented.

If they did what you suggest, the case would no doubt be thrown out, unless they made up some BS story with the landlord, which could happen, but is very unlikely in Europe. They tend to do things more by the book, in England at least, and I'm pretty sure in most other western European countries.

When bought, the difference over here is that unless the prosecution can prove the property was bought with the proceeds of drug sales, they can't take your house off you, and that law only came in relatively recently too, along with any other belongings.

However, most people rent because then they can move around more freely.

Hi jimbroker - that could work, but I'd only use that technique if there was a strong pungent smell near the front door (Which there shouldn't be!!), as by not just opening the front door, the cops will become suspicious, unless you have a very good and believable excuse.

Hi ExcelAtIt - of course it's against the rental lease, but so is growing and smoking drugs! It's better to get caught changing the locks BEFORE you grow than getting caught DURING a big grow.

It's also against the lease for them to come around when you're not in, but you've guessed it - landlords do often like to come around when you're not in (another reason why it's better to rent through a more professional agent, with an out-of-town landlord).

Regarding repairs - you should be prepared to do everything yourself, and for external work it's better to hire an independent contractor, but if a repair man from your agent/landlord has to come around while your growing and the locks are changed, you should judge the situation on its merits, always be there and open the door yourself in the event of any visit, with a pre-arranged 24 hour notice visiting time, and it's usually a good idea to change the locks back before any visit. If he might need to go anywhere near the grow, get rid of everything before the visit, and never have anyone come around when you're not in.

Always insist on being there during ANY visits, whether there's a grow in place or not, to assert your rights and privacy.....i.e. if you let them come around while you're not there before you grow, then it sets a precident for later when you ARE growing, and you don't want them asking or trying to come around without you present when there are plants in the house.

I've lived by the skin of my teeth sometimes by trying to bend these rules, and nearly come unstuck a few times, but have held it together and never had any landlord probs or been arrested in my life: unless you've got the level-headedness, don't look like a stoner/grower and know how for it, I'd suggest against it and stick to the safety rules I've laid out.

Peace

How do you not look like a stoner or grower?

Glad to see this good resource bumped but maybe you didn't notice that British Bulldog is now listed as a guest and the post was made almost 4 years ago.

Yep some good info here but i would add that if i was doing a grow at a place and it was a one off or only gonna do a couple grows and the landlord wanted to come in just tell them to fuk off! you want your right to privacy which they cannot mess with .

Yes they do have a right to come in but you also have a right to refuse them so then they are stuck and they have to go to court, this will take a minimum of 2-3 months if you play it right and tell the court the landlord has been fuking with you, they will not throw you out .Just the mention of harassment from landlord will delay the case for months by which time you are gone.

If you break down and then let them in they could be back in 3 month anyway right in the middle of the your next grow, if you have a LL like that dig in and stand your ground and then get the fook out of there.

Listen, the cops don't always have as much power as you think. About two weeks ago, I hear screaming in the street. My husband goes outside and watches our crazy neighbor's 14 yr old skank daughter following her mother's new felon bf (recently released from prison and NO this is NOT a nice pot-growing felon) down the street screaming at him. Our other neighbor pulls up and the guy takes off running (other neighbor has called the cops on this crazy famiy a bunch of times). The girl runs off screaming and crying into the culdesac next to our house with her brother. I come out. The girl comes back out of the cul de sac, runs by our house, screaming and crying, then her angry ass criminal in training brother comes running after her.

They GO PAST THEIR HOUSE and into the next cul de sac.

Meanwhile ALL cars have disappeared from the house.

then the police show up (one guy, although it was obviously later he had back up of at least 2-3 cars on the way). Another neighbor in the cul de sac they ran to first had called, we guess. Who knows. the cops have been out there about 40 some times according to our retired cop neighbor.

According to the landlord to whom I recently complained after someone tried to break in our house and couldn't (power outage, hot, we had to stay in a hotel and take the clones for our next run with us or they'd die, big plants could take it, current run was over thank god). We have the best schlage locks on the door. pick resistant. You think it is coincidence that crazy mother shacks up with recent felon and then our locks are tried to be picked? How do we know? They are a year old, we don't abuse them. I came home to take care of cats the next morning. Got in and out ok. Hubby comes home later, can get in house (Thank God), but when he tried to leave, the lock wouldn't turn anymore. Oh yeah, and some vandalism happened at the front door. I guess some criminal with a lock pick set came up on a lock he couldn't pick and threw a temper tantrum. That part is kind of funny, to be honest, although annoying.

Anyhow, my point is, that these people do hand to hands in the street. There are lookouts with backpacks and cell phones at the front of the neighborhood and stationed throughout the connecting neighborhoods. The neighborhood civic league has complained to the cops a million times. The retired cop complained to the drug squad for gods sake.

Car loads of people come in the neighborhood, drop a person off, who walks in, come back out minutes later and they leave. The boy got into beef with the drug dealing son of the police dispatcher who lives one cul de sac up and there was a shooting in the alley behind our house. The landlord is a dumb fat bitch who doesn't get it that since she hears all about it and doesn't evict them that she is liable.

anyhow, we thought they were moving and there was a for rent sign, but i guess they beat the place up so bad the lady couldn't rent it and their rep is so bad the place they were going to backed out on them, so yest am, there is a home made, white trash sign saying "We're not moving. Stop asking."

So what is the point of this?

They keep all their drugs in the car or the holes in the wall. Whenever there is a domestic disturbance they are dumb and move it out into the street, but one of the skanky older girls who is probably a whore since she has man after man after amn going in and out of the house, rolls out with the drugs in their car. Then they wait until the police have come, knocked on the empty (maybe, but at least car-less) house and then they leave. They do NOTHING. And this is in a NICE city in a really NICE area where all the rich people live and we're in a neighborhood with a lot of nice people. I guess I just figure that although there is always risk, who the hell is paying attention to us when we're the ones that are in with the old folks, the civic league, and everyone else who is sick of these poeple. The cops do nothing except show up, knock on the door and leave. At least they are patrolling regularly.

If they come ask me questions, I'm stepping out of the house, b/c our no. 4 cat loves the outdoors and his daddy lets him outside when he's watering our garden and can supervise him, but the last time we did that, no. 4 took off for a day of chasing whatever. And we're afraid these people will hurt him or their mean pit bull will. Did I mention they've had 5 different dogs in the 3-4 years they've been here? If a cop comes, I will step out and explain that I'm sorry but I don't want to risk my cat running off or being harmed by the crazy people.

And in the meantime, one of us is always here and waiting for something to happen and we've got several plans to batten down the hatches. Ironically, I'm more worried that we'll come outside one day and find our tomato plants and herbs and veggies all harmed. Grrrrr.

They really dont need any reason to kick in your door. They can lie as they do everyday. the Auto supply store was robbed and I live down the street from it. The entire neighborhood was cops everywhere. We had 3 homes that had there front doors kicked in looking for the suspect because no one came to the door witch justified there illegal search. There is not much we can do if they want in it's bullshit guys and it will just get worse.

I told my landlady from day 1, but she's a different breed. She even yelled at the cops during the unjust warrant.

No charges, no trouble, but I need a new jurisdiction.

Then why don't they kick in the door on these people. We watch one of the skank daughter's bfs hit up his trunk before AND after he goes in the house. Every time. I mean, it's not like these people are discreet at all. We have other drug dealers who do open hand to hands in the streets. They've all been there for like 10+ years. It's crazy. I must live in a wacko neighborhood or the cops just have bigger fish to fry. Weirdly enough, our cops have the rep of being hard asses, but when I meet them in person, they just seem to not care about a lot of stuff and not be able to do much about a lot of other stuff.
