Next time you’re channel-surfing and come across yet another of those Progressive Insurance ads featuring the obnoxious character “Flo” don't get too annoyed, because the chairman of Progressive, Peter Lewis, is one of the most important financial backers of the medical marijuana movement in the U.S. and the man behind the current campaign to legalize medical cannabis in Massachusetts.
Lewis donated $525,000 of the $526,167 total the Committee for Compassionate Marijuana - the organization seeking to place the medi-pot ballot question before voters in November - raised last year. If the question passes, qualified Massachusetts patients would be able to obtain up to a 60-day supply of medicinal cannabis from one of the 35 nonprofit dispensaries to be located throughout the state. These medical treatment centers would be authorized not only to cultivate but also to produce other medical marijuana delivery options including cannabis-based food (“medibles”), tinctures, oil/ointments and even aerosols.
The Massachusetts Department of Health will be charged with issuing registration cards to patients who receive a physician’s written recommendation to use medical cannabis.
Lewis has been donating to medical marijuana ballot initiatives in various U.S. states since the 1990s and also advocates the legal recreational use of marijuana, in addition to personally using it medicinally to provide pain management for a leg partially amputated in 1998. Lewis was busted for possession of over an ounce at New Zealand's Auckland Airport in 2000 - when he was 66. Fortunately, the Kiwi's “progressive” pot laws meant the insurance magnate served no time for his crime.
So a tip o' the bong to Peter Lewis, a necessary force against the staggering power and massive anti-drug resources of the federal government.
