My mouth is so dry from this MG I can barely speak without cracking...but I can still type, no matter how much I smoke...:)

But it is fabulous stuff - the time taken does seem worth it now, despite the rate that I'm getting through it! I'm going to germ some of the Thai seeds soon and see just how fresh they are - I'm up for the challenge now!

Thanks for your replies EM. I will have to do more of my due diligence on curing. I just scored some Jamaican weed from some Jamaicans here in Toronto while waiting for my few plants to grow out (one Malawi GoldX C99 from afropips, one Jamaican bagseed weed obtained directly from East Jamaica). The weed I bought was cured to a brown color, lots of stems and a bit seeded...was very bad looking weed. The smoke however was delicious...very smooth and lovely...spicy...tasting much better than the heavy indica hydro smoke that is usually around here. And the high, I swear I have not tripped this hard off weed in a while...while sitting on the couch, I felt like the room was upside-down. So curing must be good, as this was heavily cured weed. Indica dom highs seem so boring after smoking sativa dominant plants IMO.

Great work again on the MG. Let us know what it is like after the cure...if you can keep it around long enough :)

The pineapple smell is getting stronger now actually - odd how accurate these aromas can get. But I agree completely on the high - a friend had some very nicely grown White Widow yesterday - I'm not really a fan of the WW high anyway, although this stuff was top-grade - and it just felt dull. Dull as in: uninspiring, cloudy, foggy, slow, numbing, etc. Undeniably strong, but just not in a pleasant way.

We then had some Black Domina, which though much more narcotic, was far more enjoyable simply as it's meant to be like that, and it was more of a complete experience - but still not a patch on the MG or the Skunks for that matter. I wouldn't normally have been able to be that specific without having the pure sativa for comparison, and I know which one I prefer!

But it is very hard to resist - I only had one an hour ago, and I'm still thinking about another, even though my head is buzzing...:)

Thanks for your informative reply EM. I was wondering what crosses you think would work best for Malawi Gold:

MG X Flo
MG X Celestial Temple Sativa
MG X Sugarpwarp
MG X Sour Diesel
MG X Blue Truck
MG X Bangi Haze
MG X (Nepalese Jam X Nepal)
MG X Durban
MG X Caribe
MG X C99
MG X (seedsman's skunk#1Xdurban)

I had read a report by Rahan on OG that the Celestial Tempe Sativa had some similar unique characteristics in the high....saying that there is a lot of distance from the high, if that makes sense, like you can function and can forget that you are high, but occasionally realize that you are close to tripping. Maybe because of the rumored THCV? The CT also would bring down the flowering time, but not by much. Any experience with any of the other strains? Looking for Sat dom highs that would not mess with the uniqueness of the MG experience.

I am stoked to someday read about the MG X Flo grow!

Wow - not sure - the only one of those I've grown is the pure Seedsman's Skunk. I'm smoking the last, weird sativa pheno now, and it is very strong indeed - more accelerated and high-octane than the MG, which is more of a smooth glide, but the skunks wear off much faster - it's a straight up and down, where the MG is a steady climb with a very long peak indeed...:)

I would have thought the Nepalese would be an excellent candidate - it's one of my favourite smokes when I can occasionally score some - hash, that is. Same high - clear, strongly psychedelic but with an on/off switch - that's the important part for me, and that effect is fairly rare. Good quality acid has the same effect, I find - you can come down when you need to, and then go straight back up again afterwards. Classy feature in smoking terms, and is pretty rare. The MG has it, definitely.

The reason I picked this one to work with is that it seemed to closely resemble much of the profiles of the other 'holy grail' sativas - like Nepalese, and Highland Oaxacan Gold. In the absence of any pure seeds of those strains on the market yet, this seemed like the next best option. Although the Brazilian Seed Company may be fixing that issue soon, hopefully - I think they have the H.O.G. slated for later this year.

The reason I want to use Flo is that it has all the above features, plus a short flower time, more poker-like structure and very, very compact buds, not to mention the incredible flavour. I'm hoping that using the MG as the female will reduce the dominance in the cross - I've heard that Malawi males can totally dominate a cross, at least physically. So I can use the indica traits inherent in Flo to bring it down a little, without losing any of the high.

Of course, there is the chance of some outrageous phenos popping out, given the heritage of the Flo, combined with an absolute pure landrace - who knows what could happen? I do have both MG phenos crossed with both Flo males, so I'll do a test run of all, when the time comes...:)

I really like the sound of the MG X Flo. Interesting about the rumored physical dominance when using a male MG in a cross. This is what I was planning on doing as Flo is not an IBL, and I would want to be able to test the highs of any given Flo female to make sure afghani indica stone did not creep in there. I know it is very rare with the Flo, but I have read smoke reports that had experienced this.

But then again, if the positive physical characteristics of the flo could be lost in a MG male cross, then I would have to reconsider. How confident are you in the male MG cross dominance thing?

Thanks

I couldn't pick one specific instance, but I've picked it up reading other threads on Malawi crosses - one in particular I remember said that the resulting cross looked almost like a pure Malawi again. I seem to remember that it was when used as the male - although I think Malawi genes are reputed to be quite vigorous. I'll hav a look around and see if can dig anything up.

Interesting... I have a Malawi99 by afropips growing at the moment. It is even strechier than the african seeds pure malawi that I grew last summer (which died due to lots of pests). I am pretty sure that afropips used the C99 as the mother since the ripening time would have been more logical for commercial seeds. The leaves are also very thin, (almost thinner than the pure malawi G from african seeds). I am only growing 1 plant, so it could be this particular pheno, but my guess work and limited experience says you are right.

Could be - DoobieDuck has done the reverse - Malawi female to Holland's Hope male (which I think is a more indica hybrid), and from the pics I saw, it wasn't half as stretchy as the real deal - care to input. DD? The main pheno I have was bushy rather than tall (fingers crossed again!), so I might get away with a stockier cross. I do have some seeds from pheno #2 as well, which was slightly more creeper-style, with shorter branches and curly leaves.

Which reminds me - I finally germed the first seeds of the MG X Flo crosses today, and just planted 9 of each! Along with the Skunk#1 X Flo too! And there's 20 Flo F2s currently in the paper towels, and they'll get potted tomorrow. I don't know where the hell I'm going to put all these once they've grown out - that's 58 seedlings I'll have to deal with! :chin:

Heya - how far in is the Malawi 99?

And out of interest, how long did you veg it?

Initially in flowering they could look extremely sparse, but with two or three weeks veg in a 12 inch pot you could expect three or four ounces per plant no worries at all

They should do an initial stretch then stop - less stretchy than Blueberries for instance

They will keep bulking out and yielding if you let them go past 75 to 100 days +

Buds have an intensely floral aroma, fruity and sharp Malawi taste, mouth numbing effect etc.

I really have to stop talking about this stuff, but it is fecking gorgeous - and don't worry about how they look now: they will stop streching and then bulk out hugely in the later stages ... which are the essential stages for a sativa IMHO ... as Jim says: top two thirds of plant are laden

lovely pics above btw - I see the Malawi Bug is taking hold

oh yeh, and Jim was clear that he always used the Malawi on the female side in his crosses

you would expect using the Malawi as female to the offspring to be more Malawi dominant

using the Malawi as male you would expect more of a lean towards the indica mother

the F1 should have intense hybrid vigour and still be heavily Malawi influenced either way
