Making cages to keep animals away from plants

I had a great idea of putting a radio and light ny my corn patch. I was going to frighten the coons away. They just brought the corn over to the light to see better when taking the husks off.

As a guerilla grower i prefer to use thorn bushes ,as it looks more natural but in locations i cant find any , i make a fence with wooden posts and bird netting

I diddn't read the whole tread. If it hasn't been mentioned, you can get human hair at barber shops which may scare the deer away.

it was a really funny video. it's on google vid or you tube. its called

"marijuana: the real facts. anti marijuana educational video. reading the smoke signals"

the grow stuff is in the middle. they even show some of those floating raft swamp buckets busted, small greenhouses etc. I think they also wanted to put in this video for kids a message like "if you grow weed we WILL find it" by showing them small personal busts and stuff. trying to convince them not to put ten plants in the woods.

better chance those small busts were happenstance or a tipoff.

Well they aint found mine so far its been since 65', think I'm ok, I like pred piss added too but apply last as it reeks! I got mountain lion piss off Ebay comes in a squeezable bottle and has pads to apply it on, works too! I added solar electric fencing more work but security from raccoons my nemesis!

I always found laying some mesh on top of the ground helped prevent animals digging around the roots, which can happen in the drier months.

I still have a couple plants in the ground, and a gopher has made it inside the hardware cloth cage he was all around the cage for days. I am going to harvest her today before he kills her. This is only the second time in 20 yrs that they have made it in my cage...
Edit: went out to harvest the plant and found a branch he had chewed off and tried to take down his hole, so I pissed down his hole which I often do to scare them off...

This year i had a problem with a very particular Roe deer, he had this thing of following me a few hundred meters and barking all the time. First aid with brambles. (keeping it all natural )

I use bird net that I hang up with bamboo sticks. It works perfectly against elk, deer and hogs.

I haven't read through the entire thread yet so I don't know if you've posted pictures or explained how, but I am curious how you had the hardware cloth "cage" set up?

Was the hardware cloth placed in the ground to protect the roots of the plant, or was it only above the ground?

How did the gopher get into/through the hardware cloth?



I have a big problem with gophers in my yard. I've grown in fabric pots mostly for the past few years to avoid issues with gophers but last year I took the chance and placed a few plants in the ground, after seeing how big and healthy the plants grow in the ground that's how I want to grow for now on. But I really don't want to lose any plant(s) to the damn gophers. I'm considering making a "cage" to place in the ground around the spot where the main root ball/mass of the plants will be.

Deers and wild pigs will dissapear with some naphthalene, but it is dangerous (specially for dogs), If is in balls form, I put 2 or 3 balls and wrap it with some cloth, then hang it on a tree high enough to be safe for dogs, cats, etc, there is other formats for naphthalene, wich are even more easy, just hang it from the hook, or whatever it have to hang it on wardrobes/closets. Don't forget to Take it and throw/store at the end of the season, don't let it there, balls can last (effective) several months, looks/learn from where the dominant wind comes, and use it to drive the smell over your crop, in the same direction, just past your crop adds one more, with 2, if wind direction is well used, your are golden.

In the past, I used 2 foot chicken wire cages. That worked great. One day I only had enough for half my plants, so I cut them all down to 12 inches. I figured it was better than nothing. Damn it worked just as well. So now I only use 12" cages because it's much easier to handle.

Farm grade fly bait mixed with soda pop works well. But it kills anything that takes a sip.

I use plastic fencing on a roll to keep the cats out of the rooms with cannabis.

Raccoons have attempted to dig into some of my cages, this season. Fortunately, I buried the half of the cage(5ft tall) below the surface, the other half above. Upon recently visiting the site, I saw paw marks in the dirt where a raccoon attempted to dig its way in.

Animals diggign under my cages have really fucked me up this year.

I don't like the idea of burying cages, but I might have to next year.

The other option is laying some wire down flat on the ground around the cage to prevent digging.
