so china got another earthquake yesterday I heard
there must be a better way to boil water?
where you buying your gold?...but the good stuff costs its weight in gold.
Some lawmakers and market analysts are expressing rising concerns that a demand for capital by earthquake-ravaged Japan could lead it to sell off some of its huge holdings of U.S.-issued debt, leaving the federal government in an even tighter financial pinch.
Others say a major debt sell-off by Tokyo is unlikely, but noted that the mere fact that questions are being raised speaks volumes about the risks involved in relying so heavily on foreign investors to fund U.S. debt.
“This natural disaster in Japan concerns me that it could speed up what’s coming, because they are the second leading buyer of our debt,” Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, told The Washington Times. “Small degrees of differences in how much they buy of our debt, I think, can make a big difference in interest rates that we have to pay people to buy our debt.”
With the federal government having piled up $14.2 trillion in debt, budget experts are warning that the country is on an unsustainable fiscal path.
Was watching Countdown to Zero about world nuclear stuff awhile back, great documentary BTW, and one interesting point was if there's the possibility that something could happen it's just a matter of when.Fears rise that Japan could sell off U.S. debt Washington Times
Black Swan spreading it's wings maybe?
Yeah quakes have been going on for billions of years, some pretty bad though, just like a few specks falling from the sky all the time but every once in awhile an asteroid comes along. Just a matter of time but probably not in my life. And for what it's worth there was one where I live last week. Life continued on....
im no financier myself Mtn....but i doubt they'll be able to sell treasuries. nobody really wants to but them and the FedRes has been buying the bulk of them for a spell now./quote]
That's a good point but everything has it's price. What would happen if Japan could sell them below market price? Is that possible? Either way Japan's resources will be focused internally for quite awhile.
Haven't talked to my friend in Japan since the day after this happened and should check in. He's in Tokyo and must be pretty intense.
fukushima.why did they build a nuclear power plantso close to the sea ? [didnt they have earthquakes in 1971 or summat]
Levels of radioactive iodine in seawater just offshore of the embattled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant spiked to more than 1,250 times higher than norma
Heard they were ready for a big quake but just not for a tsunami...especially one that big. It was a massive wall of water. I mean how often have tsunamis anywhere near that size hit the planet in recorded history and even those were in limited areas. You can have large quakes but not many tsunamis produced...from my limited knowledge perspective. Hindsight being what it is...oh well.
I'll disagree with the 'usually' thing meaning for clarification that tsunamis only follow quakes, unless you have a methane hydrate event down below possibly which I think happened at least once off the northernish European coast or an asteroid hitting the ocean, but not all quakes create tsunamis. Doesn't seem like many ocean based earthquakes actually create tsunamis. Do they? For sure there have been some major tsunamis even before recorded history that show up in geological history.we all know from docu's etc that usually tsunami's follow quakes.
I agree. If there's the possibility something can happen at some point it will.so what happened was inevitable imo
They should build all nuke plants underwater?
How does radiation work? The super heated particle lands on you and creates a cancerous reaction?
How do those foil suits save you from radiation?
Dude...I remember seeing that info quite a few years back on some documentary and thx for the reminder! It's like there's some major fracture in the way that area is and a HUGE chuck will just slide into the sea at some point once it lets go.. apparantly at some point the side of a mountain thats being corroded/pummeled by the sea is going to break off and create a colossal tsunami. eeeeeik
