Irish please tell me that's not what I think it is :)

Does anyone know where one can obtain either briar wood or mercelyian(butchered that spelling)? I've always wanted to whittle my own pipe, the native wood around here has little to offer.
try ebay or a lumber yard im sure you can order some online if you have to. they have some really really nice exotic woods on ebay. alot of burrels which when polished look like something out of a LSD trip.

I have always wondered why pot smokers never use meerschaum....it is reknowned around the world as the very best pipe material possible:

Here's a carve yer own piece:

Turkey is the main source of it, and does not allow export of raw meerschaum, so if you wanna do one yerself, that's the best you kin do, I think, short of going to Turkey and bringing some home.

They start off white when new, and age slowly to a carmel brown, each one in it's own way

From a site on meerschaum:
WHY BUY MEERSCHAUM?
Simply put, because it affords a unique smoking experience. Meerschaum is the most flavorful and beautiful pipe you can own. Meerschaum - one of the most porous substances found in nature - acts as a filter, absorbs tobacco tars and nicotine, and yields a most satisfying smoke. Meerschaum smokes cool and dry with a flavor unrivaled by another pipe. As it ages, meerschaum colors a rich honey-brown, improving both in appearance and taste.

Meerschaum Pipes - with a minimum of proper care - will last for a lifetime. They will not burn out as briars do.

interesting meerschaum is a wood? very cool. thanks for the info.

From Wikipedia:
Meerschaum is a soft white mineral sometimes found floating on the Black Sea, and rather suggestive of sea-foam (German: Meerschaum), whence also the French name for the same substance, ecume de mer. It was termed by E. F. Glocker sepiolite, in allusion to its remote resemblance to the bone of the sepia or cuttlefish. Meerschaum is opaque and of white, grey or cream color, breaking with a conchoidal or fine earthy fracture, and occasionally though rarely, fibrous in texture. It can be readily scratched with the nail, its hardness being about 2. The specific gravity varies from 0.988 to 1.279, but the porosity of the mineral may lead to error. Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate with the formula H4Mg2Si3O10.

The porosity of the material is what makes it special.....it acts as a filter, and moisture absorber. Mainly the bowl should be made of it, or at least lined.....but for the best smoking comfort, the calabash style (second pic above, Holmes style) is best.

You can find a nice full size calabash style meerschaum on the net fer 50-100$

From a pipe site:
CALABASH: A South African gourd similar to a squash grown specifically for use in pipes. The shape is determined as the gourd grows by placing small blocks under the stem, forcing it into a gentle curve. The mature gourd is cut and dried, then fitted with a cork gasket to receive a meerschaum bowl. Mahogany or other woods can be used as well to mimic the originall calabash shape, although this is rare.

A calabash pipe is probably the coolest, driest smoke there is. They tend to be large, delicate, and certainly are not for easy carrying around. A Calabash pipe should always be bought with a fitted case.

Immortalized in the movies, books, and television shows of Sherlock Holmes. Even though the pipe smokers patron saint smoked briars and clays more than anything else.
